Background: There is widespread and growing interest to enhance the attractiveness

of rail rapid transportation for today's urban traveler. r Currently, five U.S. cities have rail rapid systems in operation. Two other cities have new systems under construction and twelve moreare planning newtransitsystems. Operating systems in the five cities which now have rail rapid transportation carry nearly two billion passengers annually. The Objective: To provide existing and proposed transit systems with service that is as comfortable, reliable, safe and economicalas possible. rTo help accomplish this objective, the U.S. Departmentof Transportation's Urban Mass Transportation Administration, (UMTA), is designing, developing and demonstrating the best rail transit cars that current technology can provide. The acquisition of new rolling stock offers many opportunities to apply improved standards in production. The Stateof-theArt Car is an important step in this program of advancing rapid rail progress.

The State-of-the-Art Car:The Stateof-theArt Car (SOAC) is being devetoped to demonstrate the optimum in current technology. lt represents today's best available technical know-how in rail rapid vehicle development. lt serves as a new standard of excellence and attractiveness in urban rail rapid transportation. This technology is availabb today, offering meaningful improvements in moving people.

Design: The interior and exterior industrial design of the SOAC is oriented towards people and passenger appeal. The design represents the best current stateoltheart that will give the passengercomfortable, quiet, and appealing transportation. The stylized exterior makes use of practical and eye-appealing materials and colors. The car body is welded stainless steel with molded fiber glass ends. r Two different

car interiors have been developed. The first car has 64 seats. The cushioned upholstered seats are designed for maximum comfort. The second car has 72 seats and more floor space for standees. The onepiece molded fiber glass seats are fitted with upholstered cushions. r ln both cars, the seat materials are readily cleanable and resistant to vandalism, and the floors are completely carpeted.
