David B. Werner Major, U. S. Marine Corps – Retired

Colonel, California Cadet Corps

COL Werner served as the Commandant of Cadets, Morongo Unified School District 29th Cadet Group, 256 Battalion
Yucca Valley High School, 259 Battalion La Contenta Middle School, 260 Battalion Twentynine Palms Junior High
School, 261 Battalion Twentynine Palms High School, all units of the 1st Cadet Brigade, California Cadet Corps for 25
years, from 1977 to 2002. Since 2002 he has served as a Special Projects Officer to the 1st Brigade and to the
Headquarters, California Cadet Corps and as Executive Officer CACC effective 1 July 2008.

COL Werner was born 27 July 1933 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps on 2 June
1952. He worked his way up to Staff Sergeant and then in 1960 was promoted to Warrant Officer, becoming a
Marine “Mustang” officer. In 1964 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. By 1968 he had worked his way up to
Captain and took his degree at the University of Oklahoma under the Marine Corps “Boot Strap” program. In 1972 he
was promoted to Major. He retired from the Marine Corps in August 1974. COL Werner enjoyed a variety of
assignments in the Marine Corps including time as a Browning Automatic Rifleman (BAR-man) in 1st Battalion, 9th
Marines; then trading his BAR in for a Remington he worked as Battalion Legal Clerk; a tour as General/Special
Courts-Martial Court Reporter, Marine Barracks, Treasure Island; a tour as Legal Chief Force Troops, Fleet Marine
Force, Pacific; tours as Adjutant, Station Operations and Engineering Squadron, MCAS, El Toro; Adjutant 1st Air and
Naval Gunfire Liaison, Camp Smith, Hawaii; CommSec/Top Secret/Crypto Custodian Camp Butler Okinawa; a three
year tour as Administrative Inspector, Inspection Team “C” Headquarters Marine Corps; Head, Administrative
Branch, Inspection Division, Headquarters Marine Corps; Adjutant, Third Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force,
Pacific, Okinawa; and S-1/Adjutant, Marine Corps Communications-Electronics Schools, Marine Corps Base,
Twentynine Palms, California.

After a brief stint in business, Major Werner served as the Senior Marine Instructor, Marine Corps Junior ROTC Unit,
Barstow, California. In 1977 he assumed duties as the Commandant of Cadets, MUSD 29th Cadet Group, Twentynine
Palms and Yucca Valley. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the California Cadet Corps in June 1982 and to
Colonel in May 2008.

In addition to his work as a teacher, COL Werner served as volunteer Associate Probation Officer for San Bernardino
County for seven years. He served six years as a Co-Sponsor for the local Sheriff’s Department Explorer Scouts Unit,
Post 509. He also served a tour as CASA/GAL (Guardian ad litem) with the San Bernardino Child Advocacy
Program. LTC Werner is a certified Hunter Safety Instructor for the California Department of Fish and Game. He is
also a certified firearms instructor for both the National Rifle Association and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle
Association. He served several years as sponsor of the California Junior Scholastic Federation (CJSF) Chapter for La
Contenta Junior High School. He served a year as Secretary, Morongo Teachers Association. He has served many
years as Secretary to the Twentynine Palms Pistol and Rifle Club. COL Werner has been included in two editions of
Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

COL Werner is a life member of the American Legion, a life member of the Hi-Desert Playhouse Guild, a life member
of the Marine Corps League, a life member of the Noncommissioned Officers Association of America (NCOA), a life
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a charter associate member of the California Sheriff’s Association, a
life member of the Military Officers Association (MOAA), a member of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), a life
member of the Third Marine Division Association, a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), a life
member of the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), a life member of the Law Enforcement Alliance of
America (LEAA), a member of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), and was a long time member of the Morongo Teacher’s
Association.

COL Werner is married to the former Etsuko Isozaki of Shikoku, Japan. They have twin sons, Laurence and Luther,
who reside with their families in Aliso Viejo, California.
