About GSM and SIM

GSM is the abbreviation of Global System for Mobile communications. GSM is a kind of Digital phone ( or Cellular phone ) communication system , the system that Taiwan adopted in the early stages is AMPS analogy communication system. GSM can transmit voice signal ( General voice communication ) and data signal ( such as short message ) , so GSM system cellular phone can be used for general voice communication as well as wireless modem . SIM is the abbreviation of Subscriber Identity Module. SIM is a smart card that complies with ISO7816 and GSM11.11 specifications. The card could store user ID data and related communication setting data, such as International Mobile Subscriber Identity, card serial number, cell broadcast group, cell broadcast number data ..., and user data storage area , such as phone book storage area , short message storage area , calculation of communication fee . GSM system cellular phone could have auto settings according to the content of SIM and provide communication services. SIM card has large and small two different sizes. Since the GSM cellular phone is getting smaller and handier, the use of small size SIM card is the main trend and the large size SIM card cellular phone has no longer existed in the market.

Card Info

Display this SIM card ID, International Mobile Subscriber Identity, MSISDN Number and SIM service table. Card information 1. Card ID Each SIM card has unique ID number. Telecom vendors would use this ID for user database management when they issued SIM card to users. 2. International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)

17

The operation of GSM communication system is based on IMSI instead of MSISDN Number. It means that when we dial to a specific cell phone number, the number is MSISDN Number. An exchange board of GSM system converts MSISDN Number into IMSI, and then broadcast the radio signal through a transmitter. 3. MSISDN Number This number is the phone numbers that GSM vendor issued, which so called " cellular phone number". Some telecom vendors would record this number in the SIM card, but some dont.

4. Phase Since the specifications of GSM have been modified in recent years, a little portion of the specifications has been different. The society of ETSI to bases on Phase to show the differences of SIM card specifications. Phase 1 is the earliest DCS1800 system of SIM specification, current standard SIM specification is Phase 2+. Phase 3 and phase 4 cards have also appeared on the market with the expansion of current GSM system functions. SIM service table description Telecom vendors would set up SIM card supporting functions when they issued this SIM card, The detailed description is as following: 1. Enable PIN1 Protection If the card supports this function, it means it could shut down PIN1 protection. If PIN1 protection is shut down, you don't need to enter PIN when you turn on the cellular phone. 2. Abbreviated Dialing Numbers (ADN) It's called Abbreviated Dialing Numbers in SIM specifications in terms of functionality. The phone book data could be saved in the card if it supports this function. The volume of phone number data that user phone book could save is according to each card memory size, and the length of " Name " allowed for each phone number is different. 3. Fixed Dialing Numbers (FDN) It's called Fixed Dialing Numbers in SIM specifications in terms of functionality. In this section only the card issuerTelecom vendorhas the right to modify ; therefore , it is used

as specific number record area . Even the card supports this function; the telecom vendors in some don't use this record area. Short Message Storage (SMS) SMS is the storage area of short messages .If the card supports this function, it means that the short messages could be saved in the card. But some cellular phones would save short messages directed in the memory of cellular phones instead of in the card whether the SIM cards have short message record area or not. 1. SMS Parameters It needs some parameters when writing a short message, such as valid date of short message, phone number of short message service center. If the card supports short message record area, then it must support short message parameters settings. 2. Extension 1 If user wants to save a phone number that is over 20 digits, the exceeded portion would be save in this section. If the card doesn't support this function, then the phone number cannot exceed 20 digits. 3. Extension 2 If the phone number saved in public phone book is over 20 digits, the exceeded portion would be saved in this section. 4. Last Number Dialed (LND) If the card supports this function, it means that the last dialing record could be saved in this section that users could look up. Most cellular phones have their own memory to record the last 10 dialing records.

Error code of address book

SIM specifications document doesn't specify encoding method for " Name " , normally would use ASCII code for English language , and use Unicode for non-English language . But cellular phone manufacturing companies may use other encoding methods under the consideration of cost. Normally speaking, cellular phones manufactured in Europe and Taiwan usually comply with international standards, and rarely have error code problems. However, Korean made cellular phones may not follow international standards and would often have error code problems.

Error code or no contents of short messages

Currently the functions of GSM system are getting more and more, and the variety of content for the short messages is also increased. From text file in the early stages to current MMS short messages, the format of the content may not be the same. This software currently only supports the format of GSM 03.40 specifications l; therefore, it may not be able to normally display the content of musical short messages or MMS.
