Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

Each generation has its own revolution in the existing culture. Its timeline of revolving the trends in various fields like the hairstyle, dance, and fashion and of course the revolution of our interaction against the competitive yet developing world.

During the time of our grandparents, the popular trend was the lo-waist gang strike in formal clothes, the hippies in the 1960s, 1970s jeproks, retro freaks in the 1980s, emo boy bands in the 1990s and now the jejemons are rising.

Jejemon is a pop culture phenomenon in the Philippines. According to Urban Dictionary a Jejemon is a person "who has managed to subvert the English language to the point of incomprehensibility.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer describes Jejemons as a "new breed of hipster who have developed not only their own language and written text but also their own sub-culture and fashion.

A. Statement of the Problem The purpose of this paper is to know further about the type of texting called jejemon and primarily, to evaluate the style of texting of the Fourth Year Section Rizal of Doa Carmen Denia National High School, School Year 2011-2012. Of particular interest would be answers to the following questions:

What is the history of jejemon? How jejemon differs from the normal texting? Does jejemon affect ones language proficiency? What is the total percentage of IV-Rizals population using jejemon as their texting style?

B. Delimitations This study focuses primarily on the prior knowledge and the existence of jejemon in the IV-Rizal. The study involves surveys on the students and observations about their opinions.

Jejemon" is a portmanteau of the onomatopoeic word for laughter "jeje" ('J' is pronounced in the Spanish-influenced Filipino languages like the English 'H') and "-mon" for "monster", (either from Pokemon or Digimon). One thing that's recently caught the attention of the local social network zeitgeist is the idea of "jejemon". It is said that Jejemons are often seen clustering around social networking sites such as Facebook and Friendster. They are also spotted in massive numbers in television chat rooms albeit they were just starting to flourish at the time of Juan dela Cruz's discovery of them. To date, there is an estimated 7.4 million Jejemons thriving in the Philippines. They have since started booming proportionally with the fast global progress of technology. The main media used by Jejemons are both basic and advanced cellphone units, television units and personal computer units. A Jejemon can only be distinguished by their writing language, the Jejebet. The Jejebet is a combination of the English alphabet and counting numbers which in a strange mix of character substitution, surprisingly makes words that are understandable.

METHODS AND RESULTS OF THE STUDY

The texting style of the students of Fourth Year Section Rizal of Doa Carmen Denia National High School was surveyed and the results were gathered through the use of a questionnaire. Out of 45 students who received and answered the said questionnaires, the 30 students with 67% are texting in jejemon style while the other 15 with 33% are using the usual texting style. This how it shows when graphed:

When they are asked about the meaning of jejemon, their answers showed that this type of texting has its own variety and/or uniqueness in communication. According to one of the students: Its our way to have secret messages by having text character codes that only our particular group can interpret those. On the other hand, it is not one hundred percent (100%) of the IV-Rizal students agree with the fact of texting in jejemon style. One of the students interviewed said: It does not give any sense and I hate it. It gives an impression that jejemon texting is not good to use as if the student insist NO to jejemon! Furthermore, an opinion was stated by another student: Its nice to use so long we do not take it seriously as if we use this as our medium of communicating, lets just use it for fun. Basing from the stated opinion, it contradicts to the impression of NO to jejemon. It gives us an explanation that jejemon may be used for feeding our naughtiness but not to feed our developing minds.

Chapter 4 SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The gathered data were through questionnaires and an observation of opinions. Comprising the 67% of the population (IV-Rizal students) agreed to use jejemon as their style while 33% oppose jejemon as their style, instead, they prefer to use the usual way of texting. Two contradicting opinions were stated, the first opinion was: It does not give any sense and I hate it that gives an impression of NO to jejemon. The second opinion was: Its nice to use so long we do not take it seriously as if we use this as our medium of communicating, lets just use it for fun meaning YES to jejemon but to use it casually but not all the time.
