Oliveri ESL 1033 20 July 2010 Students Should Study Overseas In contemporary society, the global economy is galloping like thunder. Thus, because of the global economy, any and all economies have expanded rapidly. Economic development brings some positive effects; so, people the world over profit. For instance, it brings more employment opportunities for job applicants. However, because of the global economic integration, more opportunities are also attended by some negative effects. Most companies have more requirements for their employees and this impels employees to get advanced academic knowledge. Simultaneously, accompanying the development of the economy, the global cultural homogeneity has been immensely enriched. To have an ideal job, first, students, between the ages of 18 and 28, should find universities that offer advanced degrees. Of course, if it is financially and otherwise possible, studying overseas is the best choice. Jinxin Liu, an ESL student, said, It will change my life. I will come back a new person. Therefore, the issue as to whether students should or not study overseas has become a growing phenomenon. Personally, I believe that these young men and women, between the ages of 18 and 28, should study overseas for about four years. First of all, the principal reason for my view that students should study abroad is that they are ready. Obviously, for this age group, studying other languages is an easy job. Admittedly, the native language occupies one side of their brains. However, the opposite side of the brain is empty and they can easily put the new languages in the

Li 2 free part. Students can put foreign languages in the free part of the brain with great ease because they are young. Thus, they just think in the new language in the free side of the brain. Moreover, these young men and women, between 18 and 28, easily accept other methods of education. Specifically, it means that students have open minds. It means they are ready to accept ideas about education that are different from those of their countries. For instance, in the universities of most developing countries, professors like students to finish their assignments by themselves. However, in universities of developed countries, professors prefer students to finish their assignments in groups because they know it is essential to study in groups to develop a sense of teamwork. Surprisingly, students from developing countries can easily follow this educational group method. Teamwork plays a pivotal role in any and all careers because at work group efficiency is much better than one person working alone. More importantly, between 18 and 28, adapting to new environments is not difficult for these students. Because they are the less set in their ways, they easily adjust to a new environment, even a completely different one. Furthermore, another reason for my view is that, between the ages of 18 to 28, students lack much family responsibility. To start with, students usually have no spousal obligations. Because they are too young to marry, they need not pay attention to their mates. Therefore, they do not have duties towards their husbands or wives and can focus on their studies. Additionally, these men and women, between 18 and 28, have no responsibility for child-care. Sometimes, child-care can be a burden. They do not have to worry about feeding, clothing or education. However, students have no children; so, they do not need to worry about child-care. Lastly, because they have no children, students

Li 3 can spend all the money they have on their studies. Thus, they can concentrate absolutely on their education. Child-care does not pose a threat to their study. Most importantly, the students own parents are too young to need their consideration. Because their parents are young, they are healthy and students do not have to worry about them. Their parents are not sick; they are working; they take care of each others. Because their fathers and mothers are young and can earn money independently, young men and women need not spend their money on them. Moreover, because their parents are young, they can help solve financial issues for their sons or daughters. Therefore, students can give priority to studying overseas. In summary, because the global economy is advancing at an amazing speed in present-day society, the question of whether students, between the ages of 18 and 28, should or not study overseas is becoming increasingly intense. Research done by the International Education of Students organization (IES) showed that 97% of respondents said study abroad served as a catalyst for increased maturity; 96% reported increased self-confidence; and 73% said study abroad continues to influence the decisions they make in their family life(Benefits of Study Abroad 2010). At the same time, in support of my opinion, students should study overseas because it consolidates their best chances for getting advanced and academic knowledge. I firmly believe that students, aged between 18 and 28, should study overseas for about four years.
