Reading
Directions Reading: In this section you will read one passage, then answer 7 multiple choice questions and 1 constructed response question. Answer all question in the space provided. As the world shrinks, we more and more find ourselves dealing with people from distant lands. In one sense this is a wonderful opportunity. In another sense it poses the question, What do I say, and how do I say it? Read the essay about language learning, and answer the questions that follow. 1) Language is central to human communication. It makes the exchange of ideas easier in nearly all fields. Imagine if everyone spoke his own language. What would a society look like? Would a society even be possible? The fact that Qatar has visitors and residents from different countries all speaking different languages is a likely source of problems. However, reliance on a single universal language is a solution. English is a good choice for that universal language because it is commonly used language throughout the world. Further, English is a simple and enjoyable language that is easy to learn. Additionally, it is the principal language of business and learning. 2) It is true that English has become the most commonly used language throughout the world. If you wanted to speak to an Indian taxi driver, a Turkish hairdresser, a Filipino shopkeeper, and a South African dentist, your chances of communicating with them all would be strongest if you used English. Otherwise, you would have to speak all these four languagesa virtual impossibility for most people. Moreover, if you bought a new home-theatre set, or any other technical device, you would be able to read the manual and operate this device best if you knew English well. Additionally, you would be better able to use the Internet more effectively by knowing English. Many people find it difficult to learn English because learning English costs a lot of money. 3) Unlike many other languages, English is simple, enjoyable, and easily learned. When I decided to learn English three years ago, I was happy that I had found all that a language learner may need-- CDs, interactive courses, Internet websites, graded readers stories, speaking courses, and many more learning aids. It is also worth mentioning that English is simple. You can learn English without spending a lot of time on dull grammar lessons, and you can express your thoughts in a variety ways. You can be understood often by just coming close. For example, if you want to find a bus, and you dont know where to go, you can ask anyone by saying Where is the bus stop, please? or you can simply say bus stop, please, bus, please, and surely someone will understand you well enough to help. 4) It is clear that English is the language of business and learning in most parts of the world. Universities, colleges, and even secondary schools here in Qatar teach core subjects in English. Furthermore, technical idioms in the fields of medicine, engineering, law, computer and even politics are principally English. You can more easily travel abroad to study your specialization if you know English. If you apply for a job, the first thing an interviewer will ask for, after agreeing on your certificates, is your level in English. Most likely the interviewer will reject any job applicant who does not have strong English skills despite the presence of other required job qualifications. 5) To sum up, depending on English as a universal language is a good choice. Also it is beneficial for government, schools, and parents to encourage children to learn English and to enjoy it. A wise man said "To merely know is nothing compared to being interested to know, being interested to know is nothing compared to deriving joy from learning it."
