The recent years have seen a marked rise in the cases of heart diseases. Heart attacks are one of the most notorious of natural deaths, and the human heart, one of the most silent of killers. Still, for the longest time, cardiac arrest continues to be the major causes of deaths in the West and the third largest killers in India. A study conducted by the WHO reveals that over 17 million people pass away from cardiac event, cardiovascular disease and heart stroke yearly. The basic causes of heart disease are unhealthy, stress-filled and chaotic lifestyle. Various experimental studies indicate that elevated cholesterol, triglyceride and uric acid levels in the blood, thrombosis, certain metabolic disorders (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, etc.), vitamin B deficiency and lack of physical exercise accelerates the chances of acquiring cardiovascular conditions. Diseases related to the heart may arise due to decreased/no supply of oxygen rich blood to the heart muscle by the coronary artery which may further result in ailments like angina pectoris, coronary thrombosis (heart attack) and the myocardial infraction. Common symptoms of heart disease are shortness of breath, chest pain or pain down either of the arms, palpitations, emotional instability, fainting, frequent perspiration, cold hands and feet, and fatigue. Herbal Cures for Heart Diseases Heart diseases are a widespread problem around the globe. These herbal remedies can do wonders if taken along with proper diet and regular exercises.

1. Having 2 to 4 garlic (Allium sativum) cloves on an empty stomach every morning or boiled in milk and consumed, is said to be effective in cases of heart problems.

2. Drinking a glass of wheat grass (Triticum aestivum) juice is beneficial in cardiovascular conditions as it is known to have dilating effect on the blood vessels, hence promising a better blood circulation and less risk of heart diseases.

3. A glass of aloe (Aloe vera) juice taken everyday is believed to be useful for healthy heart as studies indicate its efficacy in reducing cholesterol, triglyceride, sugar and lipid levels in the blood.

4. Consuming clove (Syzygium aromatic um) buds in any form, as a spice in food preparations or in powdered form orally is good for heart.

5. A teaspoonful of carom (Trachyspermum ammi) seeds powder taken with a pinch of asafetida (Ferula asafoetida) consumed twice a day is an effective remedy against heart diseases. Ajwan / Ajwain seeds are also known as carom seeds.

6. Consuming neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extracts or having a cup of neem herbal tea for a month helps in blood vessel dilation, reduces anxiety and emotional disturbances, thus controlling the heart rate.

7. Consuming about 4-5 g of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) seeds powder twice daily is believed to have a calming effect on the heart.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) consumed either as herb (the leaves) or as a spice (the seeds) has a strong modulating effect on blood lipid levels and can substantially reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and abnormal blood clots. A teaspoonful of the powdered fenugreek seeds taken with lukewarm water is considered good for heart.

9. Administering a teaspoon of powdered arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) bark twice daily along with water or milk is considered an effective remedy for heart disease.

Having a cup of Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) juice or eating its fruit daily tones up all the organs of the body and helps in maintaining a healthy heart

Diet and Exercise for Healthy Heart For a healthy heart, eat healthy food and try to make it a regular part of your diet. One must cut down on foods rich in saturated fats and simple sugars, which are likely to increase cardiac risk. Intake of salt should be reduced and that of potassium should be enhanced in meals. A well balanced diet containing fresh fruits, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains (brown rice, oatmeal, cereals with bran, etc.), legumes, nuts (walnuts and almonds) and dark chocolate is highly advisable. People with heart problems must increase the intake of vitamin B and E in their diet as it is beneficial for heart. Heart patients must keep a check on the two rivals of the heart, i.e., diabetes and high blood pressure, as these can raise the risk of heart diseases and stroke. Stress and anxiety, obesity, tobacco consumption, excessive intake of alcohol or coffee may further boost the risk for cardiovascular diseases. A regular and moderate exercise is the most important for healthy heart.
