What is TELEMATICS?

Telematics is the blending of computers and wireless telecommunications technologies, ostensibly with the goal of efficiently conveying information over vast networks to improve a host of business functions or governmentrelated public services. The most notable example of telematics may be the Internet itself, since it depends on a number of computer networks connected globally through telecommunication backbones. The term has evolved to refer to automobile systems that combine global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking and other wireless communications for automatic roadside assistance and remote diagnostics.

TELEMATICS SCENARIO IN INDIA

Telematics at nascent stage

India is a growing economy and increasing tech savvy population in creating emerging market for telematics.

Infrastructure and Cost limitations Lack of user acceptance because of the cost factor Lack of Regulatory and R&D push from the Government Lack of Standards Increasing mobile users, which is the key to growth of telematics

Potential future of telematics market in India because of established IT industry and Automotive Industry along with growing infrastructural facilities.

Telematics: Weak on demand side but strong on supply side

MARKET SCENARIO FOR TELEMATICS IN INDIA

Emerging Telematics Market Established Supply side for Telematics IT and Automotive Industry (billion dollars industry)

Large fleet operators, logistics firms, and taxi companies have taken a more positive view of telematics services. To cater to the commercial vehicles segment, a number of local players offer fleet management, vehicle tracking, and other value-added services using technologies such as GPS, GPRS, GSM, and CDMA.

FUTURE OF TELEMATICS IN INDIA

Promising future for telematics in India because of well established IT industry and Automotive Industry and coming of 3G mobile communication.

Enabling factors such as spread of mobile communications, increase in mobile phone users, low entry barriers to mobile communication, infrastructural development (roads and wireless communication) and increasing awareness among the consumers, would provide thrust to telematics development in India.

The commercial goods transport segment i.e. Fleet operators are likely to be the potential target for Telematics solutions such as fleet tracking, anti-theft protection, and asset management primarily due to efficiency improvements leading to higher profitability. Unlike other countries where stolen vehicle tracking created the market of telematics, the drive in india is coming from fleet management.

Acceptance of Telematics for private vehicle users would be gradual due to cost factor.

The major obstructions in telematics development would be due to lack of user acceptance, lack of regulatory push from the government (making digital maps available), lack of infrastructure and cost limitations. Hence the strategies should be designed which would focus on increasing the penetration level and identification & implementation of mobile based telematics for cost viability.
