Beliefs

Introduction: Beliefs in the world were started by individual interpretation. Through the presentation of these ideas. others could elaborate and spread out newly based ideas. Political and religious beliefs created in the world we live today are much like those created back during the early ages in this country. I believe that beliefs on a more mental note are those that are more agreeable upon. Strong worshipping in God, justice and liberty created for all and the differences between religion and law are incorporated into these political and religious beliefs that I agree with.
I.

Early American, such as Jonathon Edwards, concluded God is their leader. a.) Jonathon Edwards expressed that god was the one in charge of an individual's life. b.) "It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of Almighty God one moment..." (156)
1. I agree with the quote above. Edwards wanted people to know that God

was the one who gave us everything: therefore those who repaid him with evil, were sure to deal with the fierce wrath of God. Beliefs of God as an upper power are constantly seen through literature and even in political society. II. Justice and liberty mentioned in government documents and speeches concerning political justice. a.) The Declaration of Independence deals with justice and equality through political beliefs. b.)"That all men are created equal; they are endowed b their Creator with certain Unalienable rights; among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."(272)
1. I agree with Jefferson when he explains that all men have equal rights that

were given to them be their creator. People are to gain their happiness and have justice through their beliefs, not to be stopped by higher officials. III. Distinguished political laws and religion. a.) Americans throughout history have gone against law, stating that God is a higher power. This is seen in "The Right to Be Free," explaining a time through the American Revolution.

b.) "Protestant ministers had proclaimed from their pulpits that no man need obey a government that violated the will of God as defined in the Bible."
1. I agree with this quote which states that is someone believes it is against

their religious beliefs, ten they should not obey the law that so righteously violated their thoughts. There are solutions to this problem, one being the 1st amendment which protects and individual's freedom of religion. Summary: Political and religious beliefs differ between individuals. I believe that the beliefs expressed above by early Americans, which are: worshipping in God, justice and liberty.

The Concept of the Individual

To illustrate the differences between the individual, create two portraits- one representing the romantic and transcendentalist view, the other representing the Gothic view.

Introduction: In the 19th century, new forms of literature were beginning to form. The concept of an individual revolves around two groups. These groups have diverse views in their use of description and ideas. The romantic and transcendentalist views differ from the Gothic view. This will be proven by examining the traits in romantic and transcendentalist work compared to Gothic work.

I. Romanticism places emphasis on strong emotions and individual sprit. a.) Romanticism was created in order to unleash imagination in writers, counterattacking the known 18th century movement, the Age of Reason. b.) When Tom reached home, he found the black print of a finger burnt, as it were, into his forehead, which nothing could obliterate. (354) 1. As seen in the quote, romanticism depicted imaginary thoughts and spiritual ideas. Logical reasoning was ignored in romanticism. II. American Transcendentalist reflect the idea that forms of truth exist beyond reason or experience.

a.) Emerson believed that an individual is able to explore and discover their own higher reason for being or truth. b.) Art is long, and time is fleeting, and our hearts, though stout and brave, still, like muffled drums, are beating (345) 1. As seen in the quote, transcendentalism depicted thoughts and spiritual ideas that a person was able to discover on their own. Emerson compared life to that of a beating drum, countering the logical reasoning. III. Gothic description comes from the unknown, demonic fantasies. a.) Edgar Allen Poe was known for his use of gothic description. He created a gloomy, dark scene in many of his works. b.) And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all. (461) 1. Poe uses descriptive words to create a seen of uneasiness and darkness. Unlike romanticism and transcendentalism, gothic writings were seen as the dark side of individualism.

Roundtable Discussion

Introduction: Many writers can agree with Thoreaus statement. His quote is concerned with individual thinking and freedoms that are not based upon a general opinion.

I. Thoreaus theory comes from individualism, not from the similar thinking of all. a.) Edgar Allen Poe had a unique sense to him and his work that made him stand out from the rest. He would have agreed with Thoreau.

b.) And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all. (461) 1. Poe uses language that others had not seen at the time. Describing gloom and misfortune.

II. Thoreau shows the individual freedom of people. a.) Emerson also incorporates into the Psalm of Life, how a person reaches their own choices as time passes b.)Art is long, and time is fleeting, and our hearts, though stout and brave, still, like muffled drums, are beating (345) 1. Emerson, like Thoreau compares personal individualism through self discovery. He shows that as time passes, a person gains individual characteristics, such as bravery.

Visions of Good and Evil Introduction: An individual is full of different emotions and characteristics. Romantic and transcendentalist writers had similar but opposing views in The Celebration of the Self and The Dark Side of Individualism.

I. Romanticism and transcendentalism views are expressed in The celebration of the Self. a.) Expressed individual freedoms, thoughts, and imagination. b.) Art is long, and time is fleeting, and our hearts, though stout and brave, still, like muffled drums, are beating (345) ) 1. Emerson describes life through experience, something that was new to American Transcendentalist.

III. Gothic views are seen in The Dark Side of Individualism.

a.) Gothic views are also a form of romanticism, since it captures imaginary creations, but were filled with darkness and mystery. b.) And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all. (461) 1. Poe uses descriptive words to create a seen of uneasiness and darkness. Unlike romanticism and transcendentalism, gothic writings were seen as the dark side of individualism.

The American Way

Introduction: Principles and values that most people believe makes it important in the creation of the United States as a nation. Until this day those beliefs and values still means so much to the people.

I. Patrick Henry an American patriot and self-taught lawyer, who proposed the Virginia Convention, which is a speech that talks about men generally. a.) Give me liberty, or give me death. -Having freedom means a lot because you can do what ever you want or what makes you happy. If we just live life it is self, most likely we will become bitter, depress, and boring. b.) "Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with these warlike preparations which cover out waters and darken our land, this proves the point that the United States should go to war because if the people do ask yourself maybe they will see the message.

II. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence influenced by the 1689 English Declaration of Rights, which formally ended the reign of King James a.) Ideas and phrases from both the Constitution of Virginia, and George Mason's draft of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. b.) We mutually pledge to each other our lives, out fortunes, and out sacred

honor. - Some of these words mention is a principles in life, but to a person a value.

Summary: Overall, principles and values means so much to other people. These qualities are important.

To Form a Perfect Union

Introduction: The Puritan and American revolutionaries that evolved during the 16th to late 17th century revolutionized many peoples forms of thinking on subjects such as freedom, democracy and salvation.

I. The Declaration of Independence incorporated the wanting of freedom by the Americans. a.) Thomas Jefferson and the appointees to the constitution wanted to resolve their problems with Britain, in order to obtain their rights they thought should be guaranteed to them. b.) When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands a decent respect to the opinions of mankind.. (271) 1.) This quote describes the need to dissolve from the harness that pulls down a group. For the President, he should play close attention to this because it calls for a legitimate argument, that also require respect.

II. Through letters, many talked of issues concerning democracy and independence of foreign nations. a.) Abigail Adams continuously wrote letters to her husband that spoke of the occurring events while he was out in his presidency. b.) For whilst you are proclaiming peace and good-will to men, emancipating all nations, you insist upon retaining an absolute power over wives. (286) 1.) This quote describes the things President Adams was out searching for.The President today should make note of this because it symbolizes how Mr. Adams kept the people at home, the wives, calm and hardworking for the cause.
