The Original Scarf - Seasons 12 through 14

On this page I will explain how to create a replica of the original scarf, which is generally considered to be the favorite. The scarf in it's original form was first seen in Robot and throughout the years it saw many alterations, usually pieces removed between seasons. Although the original scarf ended up attached to another scarf in season 16, this page will show the scarf as it appeared in seasons 12 through 14. Click through the patterns below to see what the scarf looked like in each story. (You can

1. "Robot" and "The Sontaran Experiment" 2. "Ark in Space," "Genesis of the Daleks" and "Revenge of the Cybermen" 3. All season 13 stories 4. "Masque of Mandragora," "Hand of Fear," and "Deadly Assassin"

As you can see, the scarf had several pieces removed as time went on, but the scarf did not get much shorter due to the fact that it also got more stretched-out. If you watch Robot and Masque of Mandragora for example you will notice that the scarf is about the same length in both stories, just with fewer stripes! This is why you also have to take into consideration if you want the scarf to be stretched or not. If you want a Robot scarf you should not stretch it, as opposed to the season 14 version, which looks much better stretched. (Instructions for stretching can be found on the instructions page.) * These patterns all begin at the bottom left and end at the bottom right, joining at the top. (or vice-versa) A text-based version of this pattern is here.

How to create the original scarf

The first and most important step is finding the correct yarn for the project, and this is not easy! Over the years I have searched and searched for the perfect colors and I have finally found some that are almost perfect. These colors are not all the same brand or fiber, but they work fine together, at least in my experience. (you might have to adjust your knitting tension slightly for the different yarns though.) The amounts I recommend will cover any of the patterns above. Red Best Choice: Nashua "Julia" (0178 - "Harvest Spice") -- 3 skeins Choice 2: Cascade 220 Superwash (823) -- 2 skeins Purple Best Choice: Cascade 220 (9572) -- 1 skein Choice 2: Plymouth Galway (92) -- 1 skein Choice 3: Nashua "Julia" (4345 - "Coleus") -- 3 skeins Gray Best Choice: Plymouth "Encore" (6001) -- 2 skeins Choice 2: Nashua "Julia" (0122 - "Steel Grey") -- 3 skeins Beige

Yarn Estimator
This assumes you are using around size 5 needles for a 60 stitches-wide season 12 scarf. (as seen in "Robot") The default values you see below are for the yarn I recommended above but you can enter the yardage for whatever yarn you are buying. I have allowed for the extra yarn needed for tassels so this should be plenty, but it is still just a general guide!

Enter yards per skein of each color:

Beige: 218 Brown: 136 Yellow: 223 Green: 207 Purple: 93 Red: 93 Gray: 93

Width: The scarf should be 11 inches wide. The number of stitches to achieve this width can vary and depends on the thickness of the yarn and the size of the needles. (The original was 66 stitches wide.) Length: The scarf varied in length slightly during the first three seasons, but would generally hang just above the floor when wrapped firmly around Tom's neck. Tassels: The tassels should consist of all seven colors. They should be placed very close together and should be about 5 inches long when finished.
