Kingfisher: A Case of Sinking Ship?

I will bounce back, says Vijay Mallya, the King of Good Times. KingFisher Airlines his Bangalore-based carrier has cancelled 200 flights in the week preceding Childrens Day, in hopes to reduce its debt from Rs. 6,500 crores (about $1.4 billion) to Rs. 3,000 crores ($600 million). Kingfisher has suffered a loss of Rs.1027 crores ($200 million) in the past fiscal year, adding to its mounting debt. Rising crude prices, a depreciating rupee and cut-throat competition have eroded the finances of his airline despite industry passenger growth of nearly 20 percent this year. The United Breweries group - the parent group of Kingfisher airlines has annual sales of more than $4 billion. But it is the ownership of Kingfisher Airlines, which accounts for nearly one in five flights in India, that perhaps made Mallya most famous. He helped transform India's airline business by focusing on services like good food, personal screens on domestic flights and airline ushers who attend to customers as they arrive at the airport. But today the whole Indian Airlines Industry with exception of IndiGo seems to be taking a hit. Jet Airways reported a loss of $158 million for the quarter ending September. The airline attributed the loss to high fuel and currency devaluation. SpiceJet also reported a Rs 240 crore (approx $48 million) net loss. These troubles of airlines have coincided this year with India's own troubles of slow growth, high inflation and corruption scandals. Facing Daily losses in crores and failure to get benefited out of debt restructuring carried out past year; it is the worst testing period for Kingfisher to survive the tide of second downturn. Students have to analyse the Indian Airline Industry and then address the specific case of Kingfisher Airlines. Students are allowed to make use of any references outside the case. (reference/evidence to be made available to jury if required during presentation). A list of possible source of information is given in following pages. Students should try to cover answers to the following questions given below in their presentation. What are major trends in Indian/global airline industry relevant to the Case? Do you see any relationship with macroeconomic scenario? How will you evaluate competition and its impact on Kingfisher?
