Ceramco unveiled their CERCON Smart CeramicsSM Beauty and Brawn Sweepstakes at this meeting, which would award a licensed dentist with a grand prize of a two-year lease on a 2003 Corvette. Visibility for the Ceramco booth was highlighted in the Chicago Dental Societys DAY BY DAY newsletter, which captured the CERCON display in its photo of the meetings ribbon cutting ceremony. "We were thrilled to have both an exciting offer and educational programs for dentists and their staff at this years Mid-Winter meeting," said Tim Mack, V.P., General Manager of DENTSPLY Ceramco. "After all, whats more symbolic of beauty and strength in America than a Corvette? To the metal-free ceramic market, our CERCON System is all that and more," he concluded. CERCON educational seminars were presented on the hour Friday and Saturday by a variety of well-known clinicians using the zirconia restorative system, first launched in the fall of 2001. It was standing room only in the theater for presentations by Lou Graham, DDS, Chicago, IL.; David Little, DDS, San Antonio, TX; Mark Latta, DMD, MS, Omaha, NE; Karl Leinfelder, DDS, Chapel Hill, NC., and Michael DiTolla, DDS, FAGD, Newport Beach, CA. In two days of lectures nearly 300 CERCON Sweepstakes entries were received.

After one of his presentations, Dr. Graham commented, "the CERCON all-ceramic system has been in Europe for years before it was introduced in the U.S. in 2002. So, its not new and it is receiving a lot of attention due to its successful four-year clinical history and its versatility. Unlike other options, CERCON uses esthetic zirconia core materials, which can then be cemented routinely," said Dr. Graham. "The key (to this material) is its strength. And theres clinical and scientific data to back this up. Zirconia will not fatigue dramatically like previous ceramic cores. It has unique self-healing properties that actually repair early cracks. Labs can create durable bridges will small 3 x 3 connectors. I feel very comfortable delivering Cercon restorations," said Dr. Graham. Zirconia (zirconium oxide, ZrO2 ), a highly stable oxide ceramic, has been used for over 33 years in industrial applications and as a bio-material where high strength and reliability are essential. Zirconia is currently the material of choice for hip replacements, an application demanding exceptional physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Through May 15, 2003, the CERCON Beauty and Brawn Sweepstakes was open to all licensed dentists practicing in the Continental United States. Dentists who participated in a CERCON demonstration at the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta, Ga., or the California Dental Meeting in Anaheim, California, or prescribe CERCON, were authorized to enter the sweepstakes. Dentists who prescribed CERCON restorations could enroll by completing an entry form available from their CERCON lab or from DENTSPLY Ceramco - and returning it and a copy of the prescription to their CERCON certified lab. The number of entries were not limited. Additionally, first, second, third and fourth place prizes of Corvette bomber jackets, XBox Game Systems, die-cast pace cars and fitness bags were available to dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians and dental assistants who participated in a CERCON demonstration at the DENTSPLY Ceramco booth. The CERCON Smart Ceramics System, which includes milling, sintering and suction units and an assortment of cosmetic veneering ceramics, was developed after eight years of university and industry research and three years of successful clinical study. properties, unequalled by any other dental ceramics available today. n a study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, AACD, consumer demand for tooth whitening procedures has increased by more than 300% since 1996. This has translated into more dentists offering in-office treatments and many dental companies producing over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products1. Industry analysts anticipate that in 2003 as many as 100 million US consumers will spend $2.3 billion for teeth whitening products and services. This increase in consumer demand for whitening products has a direct impact on shades requested by dentists for crown and bridge restorations. So, what is your lab doing to meet this

Sids Tips on Cercon Maintenance

Q: How does the Brain keep track of the End mills?
A: When you use a 38mm block it will subtract 4 from the End Mill count. Using a 30mm block, it will subtract 3. Using a 12mm block, it will subtract 1.

Q: How do I change an End Mill?

A: If you are changing one because it broke, below are the steps to follow: 1. Press the Menu button until you come to the tool change operation and then press start. 2. Select the type of End Mill that you are changing, press start and the bar code scanning light will come on. 3. Scan the bar code on the End Mill. 4. Remove the old End Mill. 5. Clean out the hole for the End Mill. 6. Place the new End Mill in and move it back and forth until you hit the bottom. This will ensure that there are no air gaps. 7. Tighten the allen screw on the spindle. Make sure that the flat surface on the End Mill is where the allen screw hits. Note: You can start from step 3 and continue if you are replacing the End Mill because it has reached 0.
continued on page 4

Q: My Brain scan light comes on and the Display says "Tool Change?"
A: When the machine counts down to 0 it will ask you to scan a barcode for a new *End Mill. The machine will not continue until you have replaced the new End Mill. The Brain will display a warning when the End Mill count reads 12 or below.

Q: I broke an End Mill. Do I have to change both End Mills?"

A: No, the machine keeps track of the coarse and fine End Mill counts separately.

4. Make sure that bag is still square before closing the cover. 2) If you are reusing the bags, this will cause the Clean to ask for the bag to be changed sooner. The reason is, dust will start penetrating into the bag and not allow proper air flow through the bag.

Q: My block or End Mill will not scan. Can I use another block or End Mill bar code?
A: No, it is important that you use the bar code that comes with the block or End Mill. The bar code gives the Brain important information that is needed for calculating the milling process.

Q: When I change the bag on the Cercon Clean, how full should it be?
A: When you change the bag for the Clean, it should be between 1/4 to 1/3 full. Your bag on average should last as long as your End Mills. If you have recently changed the bag, or you are changing an un-full bag because it is asking you to change it again, it could be due one of the two reasons listed below. 1) The bag was not properly installed into the Clean. To install a bag you should follow these steps. 1. Fold the two ends of the bag forward then backward. The fold should be about 2 inches. 2. Square the two ends like a paper shopping bag. 3. Keeping the bag square, insert it into the clean and connect it.

Q: What preventive maintenance is needed on the Cercon Clean?

A: When changing the Cleans bag, you should check two things: 1) The Cercon Clean has a fine filter that should be checked and cleaned when dirty. Follow the instructions in your owners manual to remove and clean the filter. 2) The compartment that the bag is in should be dust free. Blow out any dust that may be in the compartment. If it is not kept clean, it could cause motor damage.

CERCON CERAM S for Zirconia Substructures. Keys to Success!!!!

s with any good quality porcelain, there are keys or main points which sometimes need emphasis to help laboratories achieve the desired results. Cercon Ceram S is very high quality porcelain following in the footsteps of other Degussa products such as DuceraGold (GoldenGate) Duceram, Duceram+ LFC and others. The shading system is similar to these porcelains and that of other European style porcelains. The Cercon Ceram S can produce beautiful restorations and exacting shades. European style porcelains such as Creation (Jensen Industries), Omega 900 (Vident), Duceram+ (Dentsply) and Cercon Ceram S depend on achieving "translucency",or "vitality" by the final layer being clear or opal clear overlays of the incisals and the dentins. The result is that for our American style build-ups, the dentin direct from the bottle is not as translucent without this final overlay of enamels. To achieve this "vitality" with an American style build-up (3 to 4 powders), For the perfect fit, use a red or blue the translucency modifiers are used. In all porcelain systems, there are always prodCrayon type pencil and mark any ucts to create more or less translucency in the dentin. "Horizontal" or "Diagonal" milling These are products like "opaceous dentin" (OD) to opacify and "clears" to cremarking. Use fine carbides on slow ate more translucency. The Cercon Ceram S has the equivalents. They are speed and carefully remove these Chroma Dentin (CD + the shade) and TC (Transpa Clear). milling marks. To get this vitality without the overlays, we add TC to our powder dentins. 1 TC to 3 parts enamel

1 TC to 3 parts Dentin This addition of translucency modifiers will allow you to produce restorations with added VITALITY.
