JUE 200 ENGLISH I LECTURER: SHAHRIER PAWANCHIK INTRODUCTION JUE 200 is meant for students who have passed

d JUE 100 English course and also for students who have secured band 4 score in MUET. It is an intermediate level English proficiency course which is offered by the School of Distance Education (PPPJJ). This course adopts an integrated communicative approach and the mastery of English does not only involve knowledge of its linguistic forms but also on how, when and who these forms are appropriate. Thus this approach will help students to make the transition from the linguistic structures to use of English in real life situations. It is hoped that this course will be a lively and stimulating learning experience. OBJECTIVES This course is a continuation of JUE 100. It is designed to help the students to acquire proficiency in the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and in grammar and vocabulary at the intermediate level. This will equip the students to communicate effectively in everyday activities as well as in academic and job situations. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES At the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. use English with confidence. 2. speak clearly, fluently and accurately. 3. read and comprehend a variety of texts with understanding 4. show listening comprehension skill 5. communicate clearly in a variety of written contexts 6. use accurate grammar and demonstrate a good range of vocabulary METHOD OF STUDY We will be using English Result (Intermediate Students Book) by Mark Hancock & Annie McDonald as our text. You are required to study and comprehend the linguistic forms and functions found in the book. Do the exercises on your own. I have placed some lecture notes on tenses, reading comprehension and writing (in the form of power point) in the PPPJJ portal (http://el.usm.my). You are encouraged to refer to other English texts.

As for writing, please refer to the instruction Written Assignment & Group Discussion which is attached together with this academic planner. You are required to work in a group by giving your opinion and ideas. For group oral presentation, you are required to discuss what you have written for your writing assignment. Record your discussion in a CD. Send your written assignment together with the CD to the School of Distance Education, USM on or before October 30, 2011. Finally, your final exams will be based on the linguistic forms and functions that you have learnt. INTENSIVE COURSE The intensive course will be held in January 2011. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT & GROUP DISCUSSION i. You are required to form a group of four (4) or five (5) members and not less, and the members can be from the same regional centre (Pusat Wilayah) or other states Choose one issue or problem on English or Education that a reader has written to the editor of a local newspaper (The Star, The Sun, The New Straits Times, The Sunday Times). The article that you choose should be from July till October 2011. Do not pick an article from the newspapers online version. You must narrow down your choice. Write in about 600-700 words on the topic that you have chosen by giving your group opinions. You are required to attach a copy of the said article for the examiners reference. You may incorporate pictures. Discuss the assignment that you have written and have it recorded in a CD. The recording must not be more than 15 minutes. All written assignments and CDs must be submitted to the School of Distance Education, USM on or before 30 October, 2011. Failure to submit on time will cause you to lose marks. Try your level best and give a good presentation.
