Body Systems Unit Plan Day 1 of 10: Introduction to Body Systems Lesson Plan Model Used: Stippling Model

for Inquiry: slightly modified with more direct questioning model Standards to be addressed: Standard 1: Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. Indicator 1.1.1: Follow an inquiry-based process in seeking
knowledge in curricular subjects, and make the real-world connection for using this process in own life. Benchmark: Grade 5- Follow a process whenever pursuing new information through inquiry or research. Standard 2: Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. Indicator 2.1.2: Organize knowledge so that it is useful. Benchmark: Grade 2 : Find facts to answer questions in more than one source. Write, draw, or verbalize supporting details; Note similarities and differences in information from different sources; Answer the question, What is this mostly about? Standard 3: Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. Indicator 3.1.1: Conclude an inquiry-based research process by sharing new understandings and reflecting on the learning. Benchmark: Grade 5: Present information clearly so that main points are evident; Use information appropriate to task and audience; Identify and evaluate the important features for a good product; Identify own strengths and set goals for improvement; Reflect at the end of an inquiry. Indicator 3.1.3: Use writing and speaking skills to communicate new understandings effectively. Benchmark: Grade 5 : Use significant details and relevant information to develop meaning; Present information coherently in oral, written, and visual sequence; Use clear and appropriate vocabulary to convey the intended message; Speak clearly to convey meaning.

Differentiation: This plan has been written for a self contained special education class of 12 6th grade special education students who range in abilities at the 3rd grade and 4th grade level. This Plan can be used as written with this type of class or mainstream classes in 3rd grade. Older classes can also benefit from a similar lesson that incorporates more detail. With older or more main stream classes you may have students work individually to complete the lesson activity on their own and then discuss with the class.

Learning Objective: Students should have an understanding of what body systems are and how they work together. Students should be able to complete the KWL work sheet about their assigned system and be ready for questioning and research.

Instructional Procedures:
Begin in Brain POP video about the body systems. (5min) Begin with large KWL sheet on chart paper. Class will discuss together what they know as a class, what they want to know as a class and what they need to learn about the body to complete their projects. During this exercise the Librarian will write the answers on the chart paper. The librarian and teacher will guide students through this exercise by asking questions and giving examples for the class to follow. (10min) Students will then be paired and given individual KWL worksheets. In pairs they will complete each of the 3 sections. Students will be given about 7 minutes for each section with a short discussion between sections. (30min)

Materials Needed Announcements

Laptop: Chart paper; Computer/smart board with internet access; link to Brain Pop video; KWL worksheets Make sure Brian POP video is ready to go. Students have been learning about nutrition in the classroom. Use the link between nutrition and the video to begin KWL exercise with the class. Assess performance: Participation in class KWL and at least 3-5 items in each column of individual KWLs will be accessed for previous knowledge, focus, and participation. Time permitting: (total 50min) Introduction and video (5-7min) Activity (30min) Class KWL (7-10min) Individual KWL (25-35min)
