Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of what really matters, what brings value and that were lazy, either

in thinking, either in action. We find excuses and take things for granted. Europe is the cradle of civilization. It has amazing schools, educated people, functional public systems, knowledge, culture, infrastructure... And we dont struggle anymore. In my opinion, Europe is less strong on innovation for two key reasons: ATITUDE and INFRASTRUCTURE. ATITUDE I believe to be the main issue and it comprises of the following: High personal comfort: a large percentage of Europeans can afford their meals, the laws protect their pension and employment, all while affording short Fridays or less than 40h week of work. At this moment things appear to work on themselves, even if we have the banking crisis nobody feels it in their pockets. Extremes and individualism: 27 states, each with its cultural background, historic frictions and economic power. Often, we fail to be real friends with each other and we miss opportunities to build together. Leadership: we have more or less tones of just talking initiatives, but not a strong leader to set course and navigate through the storm. How many European innovation success stories receive large scale praise? In US Jobs was a guru / genius. In Europe there are people, but we cant remember their name, who was it? Hmmm...There are simply too few people to really look up to. Wheres the competition spirit? Competition not for that secure job that will allow you to get to point 1 and 2, but the competition to create? To be the one to leave your mark? And what is the suitable INFRASTRUCTURE to overcome barriers? Few quick ideas are listed below: Education & Communication: o Online and offline platform for constructive competitions for Europeans (Winners of Europe), that will help create and sustain motivation for innovation. o Create a special program to promote successful European innovators in universities and high school. o Bring the west to the east. Combine advanced knowledge from WE with dynamic development and real market needs for growth through business incubators in CEE. o Work. Dreams dont work unless you do. Regulations: new employment restrictions that will eventually, one way or another, free companies and people. Innotour USA will be a real support for Education & Communication through its power of example. And yes...sharing is caring :) I believe that the quality and education of the people around you leaves its toll on you. I shall do my best to share the lessons learned and use some tools to support this effort: live daily update on Facebook (553 friends worldwide), a final article on friends blog (3,500 4,000 unique viewers per month), newsletter (content subject to your approval) to my contacts (AIESEC alumni, business partners, former university colleagues estimated at 1,500 + people). Thank you for the opportunity and Im looking forward to contribute more. Sincerely yours, Oana Sirbu
