WHITE WAVE: MISSION & RECENT HIGHLIGHTS WHITE WAVEs mission is to be a potent stimulus for change and expansion of the dance/arts world through the creation of new dance works, the production of dance concerts, and education through dance classes. WHITE WAVEs festivals provide unmatched performance opportunities for young choreographers and eminent artists alike, and offer the New York community ongoing access to diverse artistic voices throughout the year. Our productions were created in response to the needs of emerging artists; they present original and cutting-edge dance works at no or a very low cost to participating dancemakers. WHITE WAVE relieves choreographers from the high costs of self-production, promotion, and space rental in the competitive NYC market. Our festivals also offer invaluable professional development opportunities for rising choreographers; for many, appearing at WHITE WAVE has been a crucial stepping stone in their career development. Highlighting the importance of our Festivals to the dance community, Lisa Jo Sagolla wrote in Backstage that "the downtown dance world owes a great debt to Young Soon Kim." The rosters of WHITE WAVEs festivals are distinctive mixes of rising choreographers and world renowned dancemakers. Leading companies that graced our stage in past years include Adam H. Weinert, Alexandra Beller/Dances, BARKIN/SELISSEN Project, Battleworks Dance Company, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, Claire Porter/PORTABLES, Daniel Charon, Danscores by Ofelia Loret de Mola, Dean Moss, Donna Scro Gentile/Freespace, Enzo Celli (Italy), Hysterica Dance Co., Isabel Gotzkowsky and Friends, Jennifer Muller/The Works, johannes wieland, Julian Barnett, Karl Anderson/SLAMFEST, Kate Watson-Wallace, Leah Cox, Lenora Lee, Milmul Modern Dance Company (Korea), Mise en Place Dance, Molissa Fenley and Dancers, NY2Dance, T. Lang, Tanzproject Elfi SchaeferSchafroth (Switzerland), Christopher Williams, Nina Winthrop and Dancers, and Yoshiko Chuma & The School of Hard Knocks, among many others. WHITE WAVEs most recent productions include the 11th annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (Sept. 23rd-25th: over 120 choreographers) and the 6th Annual WAVE RISING SERIES (Oct. 19th Nov. 6th: 24 companies presenting in depth works). On Nov. 4th and 5th, WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company (WWYSKDC) presented the World Premiere performances of Here NOW: Architectural Design of the Human Heart at the Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Circle). Choreographer Young Soon Kim and her collaborators Marco Cappelli (composer/musician), David Tirosh (video), James Leverett (dramaturg), Yuriy Nayer (lighting design) and Anna Kiraly (costume consultant) along with the companys 11 splendid dancers produced truly spectacular sights and sounds for our rapt audiences. WWYSKDC will be embarking on an Asian Tour of 3 cities in Korea and China in May and June of 2012.

WHITE WAVEs programs are supported, in part, by public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; Mertz Gilmore Foundation; New York Community Trust; the Puffin Foundation; Korean Cultural Service, NY; the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Republic of Korea, the Consulate General of Israel in New York and the NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS.
