Preparation, Handling, limitations

1. Criteria for fuel selection

Availability Storage Handling pollution landed cost of fuel

2. Available Bio-mass:

Rice Husk Corn Waste Baggase Coconut Shell Palm waste

3. Biomass Problem:
High water and high ash content. Low heating value. Difficulty of Transportation.

4. Collection and Logistics:

Highly Labour Intensive activity and available in distributed quantities. Low bulk density results higher transportation cost. Fuel Pricing.

Biomass Fuel Study

RBSSN Ferrous Industries Pvt. Ltd Proper storage facilities for degradable biomass. Complications of external impurities like mud, sand and unknown chemical compositions. Proper equipments for preparation and handling of biomass, such as cutters, chippers, bailing, drying and feeding system.

6. OTHER TECHNICAL PROBLEMS

Uneven spreading of biomass fuel, leading to secondary combustion and overheating of boilers tubes and fluctuation in steam pressure. Frequent erosion of boiler tubes due to high silica content in biomass. Presence of sand and mud in biomass, results tube fouling and chocking of fluidized bed. Pesticides used during cropping leads to tube failure frequencies especially the content of potassium. Presence of chloride content in certain biomass combine with sodium and potassium at high temperature aggravating corrosion process. Difficult to maintain air fuel ratio if different types of biomass is used. Due to biomass fuel size variation un-burnt increases. Loss of heat value and degradation of biomass during storage in exposed ambient wet atmosphere brings in an error or assessment of input fuel energy.

8. Fuel Firing Composition: for 50 MW Power Plant

 GCV of Fuels: Average Coal (Imported & Indian) GCV --------- 5500 Kcal/Kg Average Dolachar GCV --------- 2000 Kcal/kg Average Biomass GCV --------- 2500 Kcal/kg
(Ricehusk, Baggase, Corn waste)

Average Coconut Shell GCV

--------- 5000 Kcal/kg

Average GCV required to Generate 50 MW is 2500 Kcal to the CFBC Boiler. Approximately 28 tons of Fuel with 2500 kcal GCV is required per hour. 1st Combination: Fuel firing Composition
2500 Kcal x 672 Tons/day (5500x0.45 + 2000x0.3 + 2500x0.25) I.e. Coal Required ------- 45% of 391 = 176 tons/day Dolachar Required ------ 30% of 391 = 118 tons/day Bio mass Required ------ 25% of 391 = 98 tons/day Hence cost of the fuel comes to = 176x7000 + 118x 1000 + 98x2000 = (45% Coal +30% Dolachar+ 25% Biomass)

= 391 Tons (45% Coal +30% Dolachar+ 25% Biomass)

` 15, 46,000

Cost per One K.cal GCV = ` 618

2nd Combination: Fuel firing Composition

2500 Kcal x 672 Tons/day (5500x0.45 + 2000x0.3 + 5000x0.25)

(45% Coal +30% Dolachar+ 25% Coconut Shell)

= 342 Tons (45% Coal +30% Dolachar+ 25% coconut shell)

I.e. Coal Required ------45% of 342 = 154 tons/day Dolachar Required -----30% of 342 = 103 tons/day Coconut Shell Required ------ 25% of 342 = 86 tons/day Hence cost of the fuel comes to = 154x7000 + 103x 1000 + 86x9000 =

` 19, 53,000

Cost per One K.cal GCV = ` 781

3rd Combination: Fuel firing Composition

2500 Kcal x 672 Tons/day

(70% Coal +30% Dolachar)

= 378Tons ( 70% Coal +30% Dolachar)

Hence cost of the fuel comes to = 265 x7000 + 113x 1000 =

` 19, 68,000
