Lake Palestine Resort
The 2011 Anglers Quest Tournament of Champions is now in the books, and all Series are complete
for 2011. This event was made up from the 35 qualifers from each of Anglers Quest 10 Series of
events. The event began on Thursday with 2 days of offcial practice and then on Friday the attending
qualifed 35 teams came together for a meeting and briefng at the host headquarters, The Lake
Palestine Resort in Frankston, Texas.
A/Q would like to thank Larry & Norma Paxton and all their staff at The Resort for their 1st class
hospitality. A/Q also wants to thank the Coffee City Economic Development Corporation for welcoming
all the anglers to their city. The meeting began at 6:00 pm and the Side pot auction followed and
raised $6,250 to add to the anglers pot. This Tournament of Champions event paid out a total of
$19,200 to the anglers. A/Q also wants to make note of the great job that John.the Resort grounds
keeper did keeping all A/Q operations running smoothly and helping out!!
Ms Barbara threw a large amount of Royal Purple hats to the crowd of over 70 for their taking at
the Friday evening meeting.
Weather conditions on day 1 were great with a brisk breeze and mostly cloudy skies. The
temperature was about 58 degrees at take off, rising into the mid 70s by weigh in time. On day 2 the
weather was very warm at take off, around 70 degrees, and continued to climb into the 80s for weigh
in. The fsh catching was really good for most, but keepers were hard to come by. Most teams reported
expectations of big and heavy limits of bass. But the bite was a lot tougher than expected after the
lake got hammered in practice and the anglers had to work hard to bring in a good limit of bass.
On Saturday there were 17 limits brought to the scales, a total of 118 bass at 311.70 lbs making the
average bass brought in weigh 2.64 lbs. On Sunday there were 13 limits, 84 bass at 208.70 lbs making
the average bass brought in weigh 2.48 lbs.
The Team of Jason Reyes from Huffman, Tx & Waylon Hull from Humble, Tx took Jasons Lowe/
Mercury bass rig to Kickapoo Creek areas and brought in a limit at 23.08 lbs to lead the troops on
day 1. On day 2 they re-traced their trail and had another limit at 17.25 lbs to give them a 1st place
win with 40.33 lbs and collected $11,485. Jason & Waylon reported catching all 10 of their bass on
Texas rigged Junebug brush hogs with their H&H rods & Shimano reels spooled with 20# Hi-Seas

Mercury bass rig to north Flat Creek areas to probe the ditches, drains & points with their Dobyns rods
& Shimano reels tipped with Strike Pro cranks, Combat jigs & Kicker Fish Baits Kicker Craws to bring
19.67 lbs to the scales on day 1. The team also had a 7.18 lber to anchor their great sack on day 1. On
day 2 they brought in another 5 bass at 12.71 lbs to give them 10 bass at 32.38 lbs for 2nd place and
collected $2,190. They wanted to also thank Power Pole, Sun Bat sunglasses & Hydrowave for their
support.
The Team of Chris DiBerardino from Huffman, Tx and Albert White from Houston, Tx ran Chriss
Triton/Mercury bass rig to north Flat Creek areas to crank the points with their American Rodsmiths
rods & Shimano reels and had 5 bass on day 1 for a total of 18.14 lbs and on day 2 they had another
limit at 13.94 lbs for a 10 bass total of 32.08 lbs for a 3rd place fnish to collect $1,355.
The Team of Russell Cecil from Willis, Tx and David Curtis from Trinity, Tx ran Davids Aluminum
fat bottom/Yamaha bass rig to North Kickapoo Creek areas and had 5 bass on day 1 for a total of
12.85 lbs and on day 2 they had another limit at 18.11 lbs for a 10 bass total of 30.96 lbs for a 4th
place fnish to collect $1,015.
The team of Wade Byron from Huffman, Tx and Brian Long from Huffman, Tx went to the north
end of the lake in Wades Express/Mercury to bring back 16.59 lbs on day 1 and 11.40 lbs on day 2 to
give them 27.99 lbs to secure 5th place and collect $850.
The team of Mark Rouse from League City, Tx and Randy Quin from Huffman, Tx ran Randys
Champion/Mercury to the north Flat Creek area of the lake to bring back 5 bass at 14.25 lbs on day 1
and another limit of 13.51 lbs on day 2 to give them 27.76 lbs to secure 6th place and collect $735.00.
The Team of Brian Branum from Sam Rayburn, Tx and Keith White from Grapevine, Tx had 5 bass
on day 1 for a total of 13.59 lbs and on day 2 they had another limit at 12.89 lbs for a 10 bass total of
26.48 lbs for a 7th place fnish to collect $570.00.
The Tiremax team of Ricky Guy from Humble, Tx & Larry Cotten from Huffman, Tx, took Rickys
Tiremax wrapped BassCat/Evinrude bass rig to north lake Flat Creek areas to crank points with
stumps with their American Rodsmiths & H&H rods tipped with small cranks to bring 5 bass in on day
1 at 14.38 lbs and then on day 2 they brought in another 5 bass limit at 9.45 lbs to give them a 10 bass
total of 23.83 lbs. Ricky & Larry just missed getting a check by 1 spot, BUT did receive a lot of products
from Bill Lewis Rattle Traps, Santone Lures and a couple of Power Pole Gift Certifcates.
A special thank you to all the TOC anglers from A/Q for taking such good care of the bass to return
all but 1 bass alive to Lake Palestine.

The 1st event for the 2012 season will be the Saturday Series Team event on Sam Rayburn, January

How Sam rayburn is
Measuring Up
With the economy spiraling out of control and drought plaguing
East Texas the question on peoples minds is what about Rayburn
and its economic beneft to the area? So far this year just in Hotel
Occupancy Tax collected every month by the State of Texas, Jasper
had $1,977,458.13 in taxable receipts while Brookeland provided
$590,704.97. In 2010 Jasper reported $2,602,902.86 and Brookeland
reported $475,077.08 in taxable receipts during the frst three
quarters.
These are not the fnal numbers for the year as there is still one
quarter left for reporting in the year, but it is safe to say that taxable
receipts will total at least $3 million dollars for the 2011 year for
both Jasper and Brookeland combined.
This area in particular has depended upon the proceeds from
anglers and other outdoorsmen and women for help in the
economy of this rural town. Visitors bring in outside profts and
tourism promotes more growth in any community; however, with
pocketbooks dwindling and drought threatening everything from
the lake to crops, and even Christmas trees how is this area shaping
up in the current economy?
Well, in Jasper County the unemployment rate in September
was 12.2 percent, up from 11.4 percent from the previous year; In
October the rate dropped slightly to 11.7 percent, up only from 11.2
percent the previous year.
Jasper County currently houses at least 34,370 citizens; the
unemployment rate suggests that about 4,000 people within the
county have been accounted for as unemployed. Unemployment
records, however, only show a certain group of people and does not
include a majority of those seeking employment or unable to work
within the county meaning that the rate is most likely much higher
than the already devastating 11.7 percent; particularly because
the total employment rate for the entire county is only 13,896.
These numbers still leave half of the population of the county
unaccounted for.
It is no secret that agriculture has accounted for quite a lot of
income into the area over the years; from October to December 2010
agriculture sales averaged $46,657,219 for Jasper and $5,836,282
for Kirbyville. The major agriculture related commodities during
2010 were: beef, timber, blueberries, hunting, and fshing.
The current drought has affected every one of these entities this
year, and when the 2011 numbers come in next year there are sure
to be drastic drops in the above numbers. September 2011 sales
activity shows a total of $345,871 payment to all cities in Jasper
County down 11.7 percent from the previous year.
For the same month across the entire state though, sales
increased and payments were an average $580,105,235 up 7.1
percent from the previous year.
There is good news for the area as long as Texas remains steady
at creating jobs. From just September to October Texas increased
non-farm employment by 2,500 jobs and over the past year has
added 231,600 jobs. The state has also pushed to add jobs in nine
of the eleven major industries including educational and health
services, professional and business services, trade, transportation
and utilities, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing and mining
and logging.
Hope also comes by the way of the pattern of ups and downs that
Rayburn periodically goes through and always comes out strong
from. Only two years ago in 2009 hotel occupancy taxable receipts
were over $3 million but saw dives over the past decade as well
as highs, giving hope to another victorious recovery for the area.
Rayburn not only has a strong infuence on tourism, but is also a
major source of water for the area and with low levels voluntary
water rationing has been in effect for months.
The highest grossing hotel in the area is the Holiday Inn Express
with over $100,000 in taxable receipts every month; coming in
second is the Best Western and third is Super 8 Motel. As far as
the hotels in Rayburn itself, the Bass Buster Inn registers around
$40,000 to $60,000 in taxable receipts every quarter.
The businesses really feeling the economy and low water levels
are campgrounds that normally attract tourists poised for fshing,
swimming, and cook outs (none of which were easy this year, and a
burn ban has been in place nearly all year.)
Places like the Brookeland/Sam Rayburn KOA only submitting
$69,541 in year to date taxable receipts. Lodgings such as that of the
Sam Rayburn Country Club Resort and Marina Resort have been
signifcantly higher grossing well over $100,000 in taxable receipts
in only the third quarter of 2011.
Only time can tell what effect the drought will have on this small
rural area dependent upon a lake that has provided water and
recreation as well as a way of life for residents for decades; but one
thing is sure, no matter what Rayburn will bounce back, but the
question is how long will it take and when does it start?

2012 Kick-off on Sam Rayburn

In Bass N Bucks tradition, the 2012 season opener occurred on December 3, 2011 on Sam Rayburn
at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. For the frst half of the weigh in, it looked as though it was going to
be a battle of the swimmers. Then the 20+ pound sacks started rolling in, and when the scales closed
down it was Don Taylor and Donald Randall who brought in the heaviest fve fsh limit to win.
With precious rain showers approaching East Texas just hours away as the teams fshed, the
morning started out in the 50s rising to near 70 degrees by weigh in time. The initial lead was
established early on by David Truax bringing in 15.28 lbs as he fshed by himself. Lots of limits were
brought in, but the bags were full of swimmers. (Swimmers is a term used for fsh that are just barely
over the minimum size limit of 14.) It wasnt until the last half of the feld of contenders came in
that the leaderboard began to shift.
James Coleman and Travis Moore brought in the frst sack over the 20 lb mark at 20.10#. Soon after
Eric Adams and Nathan Stroup came in with a 21.84 lb limit to seize the lead. Their weight held for
top spot until Donald Randall and Don Taylor came in with 22.25 lbs to win the tournament.
Randall & Taylor have been fshing together for a decade, and for them it is their second Bass N
Bucks kick-off win. Their frst was the 2008 season kick-off. We stayed in or near the river, looking
for stumps in water 2-14 deep. Using crank baits and spoons, they had a nice limit by 8:30am.
We probably had 17 or 18 pounds in the boat by then. Throughout the day they continued to catch
bigger fsh, making several culls and increasing their overall weight. We made our last cull at 2:00.
Bass N Bucks presented them with the guaranteed 1st place check for $8,000.
2nd place was won by Nathan Stroup and Eric Adams with 21.84 lbs. They too had a limit in
the boat by 8:30. We tried all kinds of places and depths. While they used a wide variety of lures,
crankbaits, spinnerbaits and worms were our biggest producers. Especially the Double Z lures
prototype crank bait. They anchored their creel with a 6.47 pounder and received a check for $4,000.
They would also like to acknowledge American Rodsmiths, Bass Cat, Mercury, 3:16 Lure Co., and our
Power Pole was a real savior for us on this windy day!
Shelby Shaw and Lance Hughes brought in 21.09 lbs for a 3rd place win. Their day started out fast
and furious. We targeted shallow grassy drains 3-4 deep with rattle traps. It really didnt seem to
matter what color, we used fve different ones and caught fsh on all of them. They had all of their
weight early. We didnt catch another fsh to cull with after 9am. All of the good ones bit early. They
received $3,000 for their 3rd place fnish and would like to thank LMC Marine, Triton and Mercury.
The 2011 Anglers of the Year Casey Sobczak and Jonathan Garrie brought in the biggest bass of the
day weighing 6.74 lbs garnering a $1,000 check for that single catch. We were using a 6th Sense deep

diving crankbait called The Crush 300DD in a chartreuse threadfn shad pattern, Casey explained.
It was about 12:30 and we were fshing a ledge 14 deep. It was our fourth and last keeper of the day.
Casey said to watch for that lure to hit stores this March or April!
In a continuous effort to make Bass N Bucks tournaments as lucrative as possible for participating
anglers, Weve made some exciting partnerships for the 2012 season Dave Concienne stated.
Partnering with the Bud Light Trail to combine Championship opportunities, anglers can now fsh
the Bass N Bucks regular seasons to qualify for fve regional championships with the opportunity
to advance to the Grand Championship. We will be sending out a detailed press release very soon
explaining how its all going to work. Were very excited about it because it opens up so many more
chances for each team to win even more at multiple championship events.
The next Sam Rayburn Series event will be January 14th at the Umphrey Family Pavilion.
The Championship for the 2011 Toledo Bend Series will be held January 7-8. If anything changes
before then, we will call all Toledo Bend Series Championship Qualifers to coordinate the details.

DECA is a marketing/business club for high
school students. In addition to teaching business
skills, one of its main focuses is teaching about
community service. Jasper High School DECA
has been very involved in the Jasper community
for many years now. One of their main activities
for the last 3 years has been working with Sealy
Outdoors and their annual Big Bass Splash
tournament. Each year, at least a dozen DECA
students start stuffng bags before the tournament
begins, help run fsh and other duties during the
tournament and fnishes up by making sure all of
the trash has been cleaned up from the event site.
Because of their efforts, Sealy Outdoors has
given JHS DECA $2,000 each year. Martha Morian,
Vocational Marketing Teacher/DECA Advisor
says this allows her and her club to participate
in competitions and other community service
activities. Because of todays economy, many
students are not able pay to participate in clubs
and activities like DECA and this donation helps to
defray some of those costs.
This year, the club plans to Pay It Forward.
Because its members are appreciative of the
contribution from Sealy Outdoors, they want to
do something special with it so they are planning
on giving back to several families this Christmas.
Morian said, They realize that there are people
who are not as fortunate as they are and who may
have to spend Christmas in the hospital. Randi
Thiebaud, club President and Julie Ratcliff came
up with Light Up Lives. They have been gathering
donations of toys, books, teen things (lotions,
nail polish, cologne), movies, etc. to distribute to
3 different organizations. They will use some of
their funds theyve received from Sealy Outdoors
to purchase additional items for these families.
The organizations they will be giving items to are
Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, the Rainbow
Room and the Ronald McDonald House in
Houston.

How and Why
to Age Fish
In addition to having a handle on overall abundance of a fsh
population one of the most important things that needs to be
known is how well the fsh are growing. When we sample our fsh
populations we always determine the overall body condition or
relative weights of the fsh sampled. In other words, we are asking
ourselves if the fsh weigh what we would expect given their length.
This helps us decide if there is ample forage and conditions that
allow good growth. We also take a subsample of fsh and age them
to fnd out how fast they are reaching a certain size. Relative
weights (weight at length values) have their place in managing a
fshery and this information is fairly easy to collect and calculate,
but age and growth data is more useful. Without knowing fsh
ages at a particular length, it is unknown if a fsh population is
stunted by an over abundance or is comprised of only a few strong
year classes, either of which can spell trouble if a balanced overall
population is the goal.
There are several ways to age fsh, but some are better than
others depending where the fsh came from and the type of
fsh being aged. The common theme in aging fsh is to collect
hard bony structures that contain growth rings or bands that
show periods of rapid growth and slow growth just like tree
rings. Collecting and aging scales or even fn rays is the easiest
and seldom requires sacrifcing the fsh. Back in my salmon
management days Id typically collect scales from about 10,000
fsh a year and age them by pressing an impression of the scales
on acetate flm and then looking at them under a microfche
reader (just like in the library). On a good day I could age about
800 fsh with over 95% accuracy using this method. This works
well for cold water fsh because the growth rings from their
scales are very distinct, but for fsh from warmer climates like
where we are, scales are often unreliable because the winters
are mild and the rings from scales are often faint and can be
misread. Otoliths or ear stones are more reliable structures to
age, even for cold water fsh with long life expectancies, however
the fsh has to be sacrifced in order to collect them. Otoliths are
a fshs ear bones and are used to detect sound and maintain
equilibrium. They are located directly behind the brain and must
be cut from the fshs head to remove them. For younger fsh,
we place the whole otolith under a dissecting microscope and
illuminate it with a fber-optic light. For older fsh, well often
break the otolith in half, mount it on a glass slide using glass
glue (crystal bond), slightly sand it using high grit sandpaper,
and then age it under a microscope with fber-optic light. Aging
must be done with a high degree of accuracy or the data can be
questioned and deemed useless. TPWD requires anyone aging
fsh to take an exam every year on the type of fsh they will be
aging and to pass with at least a score of 90 or better to ensure
the validity of our data. This may all sound tedious and it is,
but Ive spent many rainy days doing just this when feld work
didnt look all that appealing. Plus, there is no point in doing
the fun feld work if nothing will ever come from it and the data
collected never used.
So how is the data used and what is it for some of our lakes?
Largemouth bass from both Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend reach
14-inches at about 2.5 years old. This is considered good growth
and tells us that with a 14-inch minimum length limit that the
fsh will be given a full year to spawn (bass typically spawn at a
about 10 in length they are not age dependent on when they
spawn) without worry of being harvested. Our average growth
rates at Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend are also positive because
if smaller fsh were older even if they appear to be in good shape
then we may have a situation of high recruitment and poor
growth and a slot limit may be needed to correct it. Another
example of how we have used age and growth information recently
was for Martin Creek Lake when deciding if we needed to evaluate
our catfsh regulations there. Martin Creek Lake has an excellent
catfsh fshery with a lot of fsh present. Overall, the fsh appear
to be in good shape although they could be a little plumper.
Fishermen from the area have complained that most of the catfsh
they catch are about 10 and not many keepers are caught given
the numbers that they see in a typical days fshing. To us this
was a red fag where we may have a stunted population where it
takes longer than it should to produce a 12-inch catfsh and thus
the minimum length regulation was not needed and should be
changed. We sampled and aged about 200 catfsh from Martin
Creek and found that it took about 3 to 4 years for the fsh to get to
legal size, which is considered about right in a reservoir setting. We
know from creel surveys that Martin Creek is a highly consumptive
fshery, so armed with our age and creel data we can only assume
that what is happening is that a majority of the catfsh are being
harvested as soon as they reach legal size and that the current
regulation is not being too restrictive.
So, anyway this is just some of the types of information we
collect and how we use it amongst other things. As always, if you

Bud Light Trail wraps up 2011 Season on Sam Rayburn
Scott Dean & Matt Reed with a 16.66 lb ve sh limit!

The BLT contestants enjoyed an almost unseasonably warm day December 10th on Sam Rayburn
as they fshed the last event of the 2011 season for the Jasper Fall Team Division. They were not only
fshing for placement in this event, but also the fnal points standings for Angler of the Year. Matt Reed
& Scott Dean won 1st place in the tournament with 16.66 lbs.
Stephen Johnston was the frst to the scales that afternoon fshing by himself this event as his son/
partner Danny was away taking care of his college responsibilities. Stephen established the initial
leader bar with his 15.08 lb sack.
Several teams brought in fve fsh limits, but Matt Reed and Scott Dean were the frst to break the
barrier to take the lead and ultimately win with 16.66 lbs. We hit shallow water, 4-5 deep along
grass edges in drains the team explained. It was a virtual furry this morning. We caught all of
our fsh in a 20-30 minute stretch. They were using Excalibur One Knockers in a Foxy Mama color
pattern. It was a long day after that. Reed is a fsherman by trade and would like to thank Mercury,
Nitro, Yum, Bass Pro and Typhoon Optics. Dean is a Technician thru the week and an avid angler. He
would like to thank Triton, Mercury, Falcon Rods, Daiwa, Spro, Gamakatsu and Frabill.
Todd Castledine and Brent Broussard caught the 2nd place limit weighing 16.14 lbs. I think I got
the record for the most snags in a single day! Broussard laughed. This best friend duo brings the any
day fshing is better than a day at work to life. While they seem to always have fun out on the water,
they take their fshing seriously. We started out fshing in the stumps with a Strike Pro crank bait and
caught our frst three there. Later, we went to grass beds with a Strike Pro Flap Jack. The color pattern
is called Smooth. With that, they fnished their limit then caught a few to cull by.
3rd place was won by Ron Smith and John Gothia. Their fve fsh limit weighed in at 15.39 lbs,
anchored by their kicker and Big Bass of the day weighing 6.32 lbs. Smith, a Plant Manager for

Akrotex and Gothia, in marketing for Altria, started out the day accidentally easing up on a shallow
hump. We had to ease our boat back off of it, then get back going again. They used rattle traps to
catch all of their fsh, reporting just catching one here, one there. The big one was our second fsh of
the day. We boated our ffth and last fsh at 2:30. They were also fshing grassy fats and drains. The
team would like to thank Gopher Industrial, Jordan Marine, David Self Ford, Trey Smith and Daleys
Hunt N Fish for their support. We would like to especially thank our wives. We really appreciate them,
and for them letting us fsh!
Going into this fnal event, Harold Allen and Albert Collins were leading the race for Anglers of the
Year. After the pounds were tallied at this fnal event, Todd Castledine & Brent Broussard won Anglers

Texas remains mired in one of the worst droughts in state
history and its creating disastrous effects on trees and forests
across the state.
After one of the driest years on record, many shade trees went
into dormancy as early as August, dropping their leaves and
branches in a desperate act of self-preservation. Pine trees with
normally thick, green crowns ended up cloaked in red, dead
needles while foliage on cedar trees turned completely brown.
The sight has created a dramatic effect on the Texas landscape
and left many landowners wondering whether or not their tree is
dead or if it might recover and produce new leaves next spring.
Assessing trees damaged or killed by drought can be tricky,
according to Dr. Ronald Billings, Texas Forest Service Forest Health
Manager. He suggests grouping the trees into three different
categories defnitely dead, likely to live and questionable to
help with the task.
Defnitely Dead
It is easier to make this call for pines, Ashe junipers (cedars)
and other needle-bearing, conifer trees. The determination can
be more diffcult for hardwoods, which are more commonly
thought of as shade trees. In most cases, a red pine is a dead
pine, Billings said, explaining that the same can be said for
cedars with red needles. Once all or most of the foliage
of a pine or cedar tree turns red or brown, the tree is
incapable of recovering.
Pine trees in this stage probably are already infested
with tree-killing bark beetles and will eventually
harbor wood-boring insects, termites and other
critters. Such trees should be cut down and
removed, particularly if they are likely to fall on
homes, buildings or power lines.
Shade trees like water oaks, for example
that have lost all their foliage and are beginning
to drop limbs or lose large patches of bark are most
likely already dead and should be removed. Hypoxylon
canker, a fungus that appears as gray or brown patches on
the trunk of the tree, is another sign of a dead shade tree.
Likely to Live
This category includes shade trees with at least some green or
yellow leaves still attached to the limbs. In fact, even those that
have dropped all their leaves may still be alive. Some native shade
trees, such as post oaks and live oaks, are more drought resistant
than others like water oaks or elms.
You can use a scratch test to determine if the tree is dead or just
dormant. If you scrape the bark off a small branch or limb and
fnd green, moist tissue underneath, the tree is still hanging on,
waiting for the next rain. That means you may need to wait until
spring to see if the tree makes a recovery unless the tree starts
to drop large branches and patches of bark, which is a sign of
death. If there is no green, moist tissue, the tree is likely dead.
An exception is the baldcypress, which also is known as a cypress
tree. The tree is a conifer, but unlike pines and cedars, its foliage
generally turns red and drops from the tree in the fall or during
periods of drought stress. Cypress trees usually will re-sprout in
the spring. If in
doubt, apply the scratch test or wait until spring to be sure.
Pines with a few yellow or red needles scattered throughout an
otherwise green canopy have a good chance at survival. Pine trees
typically shed a large portion of their older needles every year as
winter approaches, and then put on new needles in the spring.
Though its not as feasible to water your forest, any yard trees
that show signs of life (green inner tissues or green foliage) should
be watered deeply to reduce lingering drought stress.
Questionable
Questionable trees are those that appear to ft somewhere
between the Defnitely Dead and Likely to Live categories.
A pine that is topped with brown or red needles but still
has green foliage in its lower branches is alive, but likely will
eventually die. Thats because bark beetles likely will invade the
lower trunk at some point, killing the tree in stages.
When inspecting a questionable pine tree, look for popcorn-
sized masses of resin (pitch tubes) or brown dust in the bark
fssures. These are early signs of attacks by pine bark beetles.
The foliage of the infested pine may still be green, but the tree is
doomed. This is particularly true if you fnd bark beetle galleries
or trails beneath the bark. Pines with these signs of bark beetle
attack should be removed as soon as possible.
In the case of shade trees, those that have many dead or dying
limbs or mostly bare branches may or may not survive. A few
green, yellow or red leaves may remain for a while as the
tree slowly dies, or it may recover when rains return.
Its important to note that not all trees may be
stressed from the drought alone. Some trees may also be
suffering from insect infestations, disease or other forest
health problems. If youre unsure or have any questions,
visit the Texas Forest Service web site or check with a
certifed arborist, forester or tree care professional.
Deciding whether to remove a questionable tree
can be a tough decision for both property owners
and professional tree care experts. Removal should be
considered if a severely drought-stressed or fre-damaged tree is
close to a house or other structure on which it might fall. If it is
away from such areas, it may be more feasible to wait and see if
the tree makes a comeback.

Happy New Year! The New Year is here
and with it comes a new fshing season
for everyone. This could be the year for
you to catch that trophy bass. Youll never
fnd it sitting at home dreaming, grab
some gear and get out there. Looking
back on last year, the weather turned
cold earlier than normal. That put the
water temperature into the low 50s. What
did this mean? Well, for starters, we had
some big fsh caught in Dec. They moved
up early, got fat and ready to do battle
with the fshermen.
The lake is still low but it has come up
just a little. Thats good but its not going
to make it to full pool for sometime.
Everyone is going to have to adjust to
it being low. It sounds scary but with a
little extra prep time you will be out there
running with everyone else.
Now the water is cold and that makes
it a little cooler when you are mid-lake
running for a secret fshing hole. Make
sure you have plenty of warm clothes and
a change of clothes in a watertight bag,
just in case. Hypothermia can set in very
quickly if you happen to fall in the water.
January can be very rewarding on
some days and tough on others. Most guys
are looking for that trophy bass this time
of year. A few days of warm weather can
get these fsh moving, looking for a place
to spawn. Then they move back with the
next front. Thats what makes this time
of year so good for catching a trophy fsh.
There will be some males running the
shallows looking for nesting areas on the
warmer days. Some will be starting to use
staging areas as they move up. Finding
one of these spots can be a lot of fun as
fsh move back and forth. Most fsh up
shallow will be a little spooky and may
be hard to get to bite. You can bet there
are some close by that will. Lots of baits
come to mind. The most talked about is
the lipless crankbait for covering a lot of
water and catching a lot of big fsh. One
of the new ones on the scene is the Strike
Pro Flap Jack. I have been using it and
catching some good fsh. Get some new
line on, grab a few new baits, get out on
the lake and catch some fsh! The Stanley
spinnerbait is also a good bait to throw
when the grass is right at the surface.
White and chartreuse are just two of the
colors that I start with. I also like to drop
them off the edges at times. You might
want to hang on as I have had a few fsh
almost pull the rod out of my hands. The
fsh will start to move from long points
into the pockets and hang in the deep
spots from 8 to 16 ft. They are waiting
for the right time to move up and spawn
before moving back out again. The old
Carolina rig with lizards is a good choice
to comb the deeper areas looking for a
sweet spot loaded with Bass. Hope you
catch a trophy this year.
The Crappie will be up the rivers for
the most part till early spring. Then they
will make their move back down the
rivers to look for spawning grounds. Not
saying you cant catch a few around the
bridges or tight to a few brush piles. If you
want to get out of the house and catch a
few fsh, go for it. We have a pontoon boat
that can handle up to 8 Crappie anglers.
I want to thank a few of the bait
shops in the area for their support and
continuing to stay up with all the new
baits that pop up. These shops have saved
my bacon several times when I needed
something fast. Think about them when
you need some baits or a new rod. These
guys and gals in the shop keep their ears
to the ground and hear a lot about baits
and tricks that are working. Stop by,
catch up on the gossip and pick up some
of the hot baits the fsh have been hitting
this week. Cant hurt and sometimes it
can really help. If you dont think thats a
job just stop by one of the shops and look
at all the baits on the walls. If you dont
see what you want, ask about it. Most the
time they can get it for you. Thanks to

The holidays are behind us and deer
season is drawing to a close. Its time to
break out all that new fshing tackle that
you got from Santa. If you were really a
good boy or girl, maybe you got a new
boat. At the time of press the lake has
come up a little and every little bit helps.
But remember to be safe on the water.
BASS: Even with the water level
low it is still January fshing. Just keep
chunking and winding and moving. The
water that you need to be targeting is 3 to
8 feet. Main lake points and the bend of
creeks are good target areas. When you
do fnd some grass, which is not much,
you will pick up some fsh. Some new
baits and colors that have been working
are Rat-L-Traps Zombie Shad and Super
Natural colors. The Biffe Hard Head by
Gene Larew with a watermelon or green
pumpkin trailer are catching some nice
fsh. Be sure and stop in and see Scott
Sorenson at the Tackle Monkey and pick
up the new colors and see what else is
new. Dont forget the old stand by traps
in Rayburn Red, and your Carolina rig
with a watermelon or green pumpkin
lizard.
CRAPPIE: Its been slow - not too
many crappie fshermen on the lake.
You can still fnd a few crappie left on
the brush in deeper water. Most are
suspended on the river channel. Shiners
will work the best.
CATFISH: Are good off the river
channel by the timber. Once again put
your favorite chum out and catch some
cats.

Realist: A person who tends to view or represent things as they really are. Are all fsherman realist?
Absolutely not. Could a fsherman become a realist? Yes. The defnition above can be taken a lot of
ways. Since this is a column for mainly East Texas / West Louisiana lakes I feel we all have to be realist
in certain retrospect. We all have to be realistic that our local lakes may not come up for a while,
unless we are fortunate enough to have a monsoon come our way. I have seen Toledo Bend myself
come up from close to this level to nearly full pool about 8 years ago. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.
So what as fsherman are we going to do about it? Are you going to go to your old glory holes you
have fshed for 20 years to catch spawning fsh? Well I guess you could if you were trying to catch
squirrels and raccoons. How are we going to adapt to whats happening? In earlier articles I talked
about how we have to fsh our local lakes as new lakes because of the low water. How would you
feel if you had to fsh Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend for over 2 years at their current levels? We all have
had to become realist to an extent these days. Having the realism that things may not change soon
and making the best of what we have. All I hear at the tackle stores and local businesses is how low
the lakes are and how much complaining is going on about it. This is something we cant change as
fsherman. We cant change weather patterns, lake levels, or if the fsh are going to bite that day or
not. All we can do is be realist and make the best of what we have for now. Will the lake levels come
back up? Yes, eventually.
When it all boils down to it we have to make best of what we have. You can still fsh these bodies
of water. There are tournaments all the time that go out of Sam Rayburn. Toledo Bend right now is
pretty dangerous, but is it fshable; YES! Do I recommend running full speed all over the place on
Toledo Bend right now? Heck no. Fisherman need to fsh. Dont let something like low water keep you
off the lake. These lakes are wonderful right now and have tons of fsh in them. Toledo Bend for one
is thriving. This low water over there could have been the best thing that ever happened to that lake
contrary to what people believe. It has kept thousands of fshermen off the lake and has allowed these
fsh to be a whole lot less pressured and fshed for. Now Im not recommending running your boat
from the Dam of Toledo all the way to Huxley Bay, because that might be a little crazy right now, but
there is amazing fshing on Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn right now.
The last question I will ask is this, I ask this to all fsherman to really think about this question;
if the area lakes were not to come up for another 2 years do you really think you can stand not to
fsh anymore? Better yet, would you be willing to miss out on the fshing of a lifetime that you can
have on these bodies of water? As my dad has always told me if youre to get into a fght always take
the frst punch, dont wait to get hit frst. This correlates to that saying, dont wait for the results of
all the giant fsh your friends catch to make you a believer, go experience it for yourself frst!! Also
remember be a realist when fshing, it will help you get ahead.

You might be a redneck if. Most everyone has heard Jeff
Foxworthy tell one of these jokes. What makes them truly
funny is the fact that we possibly know somebody that has done
something like that. In wildlife management creativity, making
the most of materials available, and ingenuity are some of the
most important things. This article will cover some of the more
ingenious things that I have seen over the years in the hopes that
it will spark the reader into their own creations.
For those with pocket gopher problems here is trick that can be
used. After digging out the mound and fnding the opening to the
tunnel, place a mirror near the entrance that directs the sunlight
into the hole. Get back with 22 caliber frearm or shotgun
and wait. The sunlight refecting into the hole will disrupt the
environment that the gopher has created. The gopher will come
to fx the problem. When the gopher starts to fll in the opening,
shoot the gopher solving your problem.
Quail enthusiasts will enjoy this one because you get to clean
some clutter out of the storage area and help the quail at the
same time. If a pasture is short on cover pull some of those old
open box springs out, and spread them out in the pasture laying
grass and weeds over the top. This will provide cover for the quail
allowing them to get out of the weather while being shielded from
the prying eyes of predators above. This will last for several years
until the vegetation grows up through the springs making it to
thick to move around underneath or the springs breakdown.
With all of the fres going on lately hopefully people will be
more careful with outdoor burning assuming the burn ban
gets lifted. One tool that could make it easier, that many people
already have, is a leaf blower. This sounds counter intuitive
because normally the fre would burn more intensely when wind
is added, but this is used to blow the fuel away from the fre. This
removes leaves, grass, and other plant litter very quickly and with
minimal effort. When followed by a quick touch up with a rake
makes a very good fre break.
Severe drought conditions are plaguing most if not all of
Texas. Farmers and ranchers have found many ways to supply
water for livestock and
wildlife. One ranch in the
panhandle laid pvc pipe from
the irrigation well through his
pasture and every so often dug
a hole about 2 feet deep and
about twice the width of the
bucket on the tractor. The pvc
pipe was tipped with a sprinkler
head from an irrigation unit. A
large piece of metal pipe with
one end partially closed was
placed over the sprinkler head.
This pipe did several things it
protected the pvc from hoof
action and UV rays, and it being partially closed stopped the water
from washing out the bottom of the hole. The hole would then
fll up with water and a small constant fow of water would keep
it full.
Hunters and managers are very creative. All that is needed is to
just look at the variety and types of feeders and deer stands used.
Earl Nightingale (motivational author) once said creativity is a
natural extension of our enthusiasm. Judging by the number of
innovations and different types of management that are available,
there are some people that truly enjoy the outdoors.

Still Looking for
a Place to Hunt?
TPWD Offers Economical
Public Lands Hunting Opportunities
AUSTIN For hunters who do not have
access to privately-owned land, the Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department is providing low cost
access to nearly a million acres of department-
managed lands for hunting, including most
wildlife management areas, some state parks and
many leased properties under the Annual Public
Hunting permit program.
The Annual Public Hunting Permit is a $48
permit, valid from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31 of
the following year. The permit allows an adult
access to designated public hunting lands in the
TPWD public hunting lands program. Hunting
is allowed during legal hunting seasons for
squirrel, rabbits and hares, white-tailed deer,
feral hogs, spring eastern turkey, predators,
furbearers, and fshing without having to pay
daily permit fees and in most instances, without
having to be selected in a drawing.
The North and South Zone Duck Season
re-opened December 10 and while TPWD WMAs
have strong hunter numbers taking advantage
of hunting on weekend hunt dates, the weekday
hunt dates leave plenty of available hunting
areas and quality hunting for those hunters who
might have hunting time during the week.
According to Jim Sutherlin, Upper Coast
Wetland Ecosystem project Leader, duck hunting
is quite good on public hunting lands and
reservoirs where fresher water conditions and
waterfowl food resources can still be found.
Puddle ducks prefer shallow water, and we
have an abundance (record numbers of several
species) of ducks on the continent this year,
Sutherlin said. Specifcally, check out the duck
hunts on the Big Hill Unit of the J D Murphree
WMA where the hunter daily duck bag was
close to 4 birds per man per day during the frst
waterfowl season split.
Waterfowl hunting isnt the only game
available. There is still plenty of feral hog
hunting to be found. According to survey results
compiled by the Texas Agricultural Extension
Service 74 percent of Texas 254 counties contain
feral hog populations and there is a good chance
TPWD offers feral hog hunting opportunities in
those counties on public hunting lands.
Right now is as good a time as any to hit the
woods hard for ol pig sooie, said Bill Adams,
Pineywoods Ecosystem Project Leader. In East
Texas there are several WMAs that offer year-
round hog hunting, but staff recommend keying
in on those areas associated with rivers such as
Alabama Creek, Alazan Bayou, Angelina Neches/
Dam B, North Toledo Bend, and Blue Elbow
Swamp Wildlife Management Areas.
Along with the appropriate Texas hunting
licenses and stamps, permit holders may take
youth under age 17 hunting free of charge on
these public hunting lands. Youth hunting on
departmental public hunting lands must be
accompanied by a supervising adult 18 years of
age or older who possesses the required Annual
Public Hunting Permit, a valid hunting license
and any required stamps and permits.
A new online map feature allows for virtual
scouting of public hunting areas. By clicking
on the locator points, you can follow links to
detailed aerial maps with highlighted boundaries
and links to information pages from the APH
information map booklet. A downloadable Google
Earth fle (.kml) is also available that contains
all the boundary information along with links to
the corresponding APH map booklet pages.
Permits are available wherever hunting and
fshing licenses are sold, online through the
TPWD Web site (tpwd.state.tx.us) or by calling
1-800-TX-LIC-4U and paying by major credit
card. There is a $5 convenience fee for online
and phone purchases. If the permit is purchased
at a TPWD offce, the public hunting lands
map booklet and supplement will be provided
immediately at the time of purchase; otherwise,
the publications will be mailed to the purchaser
within two weeks of purchase.

COLLEGE BASSIN BECOMING A BIG DEAL

BOATUS COLLEGIATE ANGLERS GETS MAJOR SPONSOR
The Association of Collegiate Anglers has just announced that
huge lure manufacture, Pure Fishing, will continue support
of the 2012 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship
Series. The Collegiate Bass Fishing Series is one of the fastest
growing fshing circuits in the country as colleges/universities
all of the country are felding teams. Louisiana schools have
had some of the earliest teams to compete in this series which
has been functioning for over fve years. McNeese State is
organizing a team and will also compete this year. Louisiana
Tech, LSU Monroe, LSU Shreveport, Northwestern and LSU have
been competing for several seasons and have been some of the
highest ranked teams in the country. We look for other colleges/
universities in the state to also join this series. With the caliber
of young anglers in our state, it is no surprise that we are very
competitive.

promotion and product exposure with collegiate anglers
throughout the nation, and students will have the opportunity

competing at the collegiate level. Other student anglers after

win-win situation for both student anglers as well as the fshing/
boating industry as it opens up job opportunities for graduates
plus it provides the industry a pool of bright, educated young
employees who love the outdoors and fshing.
Another perk for the collegiate team angler, according to
Wade Middleton, Tournament Director for the Association of
Collegiate Anglers, is that industry supporters like Pure Fishing
target efforts toward the student anglers which enriches their
experience in collegiate bass fshing. Middleton adds: Weve
touched countless anglers and allowed them to compete with
premium products, which would have been diffcult for many
of them without the support of the purchase and contingency
programs weve designed in conjunction with Pure Fishing.
FISHING REPORT/LAKE CONDITIONS AND BOAT RAMP
UPDATE: There is a full bass and crappie report in another
portion of this publication. Look for South Toledo Bend Fishing
Report. The lake remains at very low levels but recent rains have
helped to bring the lake up slightly from its lowest ever level
of 159.4 with the full pool level at 172 mean sea level. Water
temps are in the 50s and there continues to be no generating at
the dam due to low levels. The Indian Mounds main north ramp
extension project by SRA Texas has been completed and is in use.
Indian Mounds is a popular fshing area for numerous Toledo
anglers and is located on the Texas side of the lake just above
Housen Bay or approximately 15 miles north of the dam on the
west side of the lake. Work continues on several launches on both
the Louisiana and Texas sides of the lake. Also, Louisiana SRA
continues its boat lane stump- clearing project from San Miguel
area south to Pleasure Point Resort area. At press time they had
cleared about 20 miles of boat lanes.
FISHING LICENSES ISSUES: One of the most often questions
I receive, has to do with what licenses do I need to fsh Toledo.
Toledo is a border lake with the east side being in Louisiana and
the west side being in Texas. Either licenses, Texas or Louisiana,
allow you to fsh anywhere on the lake. Yes, you can even launch
on the Texas side with Louisiana licenses and be legal. Both
licenses are reciprocal so simply purchase the license that is the
cheapest for you. Also, fnally there is complete agreement as to
the creel limit/regulations from both states. As far as largemouth
bass, the limit is 8 per day of fsh being a minimum of 14 inches
long. On crappie there is no minimum length with a creel limit
of 25 per day.

Topic: Black Ice
Q: You often hear the term black ice.
What is it?
A: Its not really black, but it is ice that is
extremely dangerous, says Brent McRob-
erts of Texas A&M University. Black ice
is ice that appears to be very dark or
even black because it is transparent it
is refecting the color of the asphalt on
the road. Black ice is a thin layer of ice
on the road and it often looks wet, not
especially icy. So it can be hard to notice
from a distance, and for this reason it is
dangerous to drive or walk on, McRob-
erts explains.
Q: Is it more dangerous than regular ice?
A: It is almost always more dangerous,
McRoberts reports. Black ice often
forms at night and early in the morning,
when temperatures are low but traffc is
high, he adds. Sunlight can often melt
it because it is such a thin layer of ice,
but black ice can last longer on roads
that are protected by shade. One study
in Sweden a few years ago showed that
there are fve times more accidents on
roads that have black ice than on dry
roads and twice as many accidents as
on roads that had packed snow. Thats
why sanding crews are always important
when an ice storm is about to hit.

lake is approximately 12 ft
below high pool. We are still
able to launch at Huxley
Bay Marina. Caution should

In January most fsherman venture to Toledo Bend
to harvest our world famous Crappie or to load up on the
White Bass that are feeding heavy on the old river channel
sandbars.
The race is on and were tearing up the Crappie. The
Crappie have moved into deeper water along the old river
channel ledges and drops. Either drop your own brush or
look for natural cover where the Crappie will bunch up.
The limit is 25 per person with no minimum length. Its not
unusual to put a number of two to three pound Crappie in
the box.
The White bass will be feeding heavy and holding on
the north end old river channel sandbars. Unless we get a
substantial amount of rain, the Whites will spawn on the
main lake sandbars and not migrate to the river proper
because of the low water and slow current of the river.
Concentrate on the south inside bend of the bars with slab
spoons, rattle traps and tail spinners. Use your electronics to
locate the baitfsh.
In January the water temperature usually drops to the
lower ffties and forties moving the bass into deep water. Their
metabolism slows down and they become less active, feeding
less and conserving energy. The easiest way to locate the bass
is to locate the bait fsh. Look for balls of shad on your LCR
in deep creeks, sloughs and along the river channel. When
you locate the shad the bass are usually underneath just off
the bottom or suspended. If the bass are on the bottom, they
will orient themselves close to some type of structure, brush
tops, lay downs, stumps, ledges, drops or humps. A jig, jigging
spoon, Texas rigged plastic or drop shot rig fshed vertically
can be very effective in triggering a strike. If the bass are
suspended, a futtering spoon or tail spinner cast out and
counted down and retrieved with a pumping motion can also
trigger a strike. Once the fsh have moved into deep water, the
strong northern fronts dont affect them as much as they do
when the fsh are in shallow water. Remember when fshing
cold water down size your lures and fsh slowly.

Lets start with a boat
ramp update: the SRA
extended the ramp at
Indian Mounds with
concrete, not blue rock.
Good job. For those who
want to fsh the Chicken
Coop area, the folks
at Newels dug a canal and worked on their ramp so its in
good shape. Holly Park also has a good ramp as well as the
Pendleton Harbor Marina ramp at the hwy 21 bridge. There
is no problem launching your boat on Toledo Bend.
Bass: Good reports. Start your day out in 25 to 40 of
water using your electronics to fnd bait fsh at mouths
of major creeks and around river bends. Then use a 73
medium action TFO rod paired with your favorite reel and
spooled with FINS braid to lower a 3/4 oz green back /gold
body Humdinger tail spinner [to get the green back I paint
them with model paint]. The other way we are catching
these deep fsh is on a drop shot rigged on a 6 9 TFO rod
and 8# fouro carbon line. Use a 3/8 oz drop shot weight
to keep in contact with the bottom. Attach your hook 12
to 18 up the line. I use the Owner Mosquito hook in a 1/0
size dressed with a 4 watermelon gold fake cut tail worm
covered in Kick N Bass garlic sent . The other options are
to fsh in 6 to 10 depths around patches of grass with a
suspending jerkbait in black/silver or black/gold fshed on a
TFO 6 9 medium/light action rod with 14# fouro carbon.
This line sinks and will help suspend your bait in the strike
zone better in the same areas. We are also fshing 1/2oz to
5/8 oz jigs in black/blue or brown/purple with matching
trailers on a TFO 79 heavy action rod and 65# FINS braid.
The key is to drag the jig on the bottom not hop it. As the
water warms up make sure to get a pair ofFlying Fisherman
polarized glasses and be looking for early bedding fsh.
Crappie: Good reports at the Chicken Coop in 25 to 36
on shiners. Use your electronics to locate schools of fsh.
As the weather warms, the fsh will move towards backs of
creeks to spawn. Road runners in black/chartreuse or red/
chartreuse seem to work best.
Catfsh: Excellent in 28 to 46 of water around river bends
and baited holes on Catfsh Charlie. Smaller fsh are in fats
around 6 to10 and can be caught on liver or live bait. A lot of
people have asked about baiting holes, so here is the easiest
way: To start, get some knee high hose. If youre not sure ask
your wife about them. Put a rock in the bottom, then fll the
stocking with horse and mule sweet feed. Tie a string to the
top and leave some room for swelling in the hose. Lower this
to the bottom, then pick it up about one foot off the bottom
and tie it to a stump. You now have a baited hole! You can
also use a gravy producing dog food and should have fsh
in about 5 hours, some times much sooner. You will need to
rebait in about 7 days . Remember to take a kid fshing and
when it tugs on the line... SET THE HOOK!!!!

Room. I caught the big bass just before Christmas in
Indian Creek/Buck Creek area which is the extreme
southern end of the lake. The jigging spoon will continue
to be one of our weapons of choice through the month of
January and even into February as long as the water stays
cold. I caught this bass on a Klassic Lures spoon that is
built in LeCompte, LA. They are great cold water spoons.
In January we will also use a drop shot and will use a
6 lb rig with lighter sinkers and a 10 lb test version for a
little deeper and heavier rig. My normal approach is to
use the 4-5 inch worms with the 6 lb rig and the 6 and
7 inch versions with the 10 lb rig. Sometimes I will bury
the hook in the worm with the 6-7 inch plastics and nose
hook the small worms/lighter rig. The main approach
with the drop shot is to not get in a hurry. As a matter of
fact, when fshing in the winter I move less and fsh slower
than I do the rest of the year. Choose good cover and fsh
it all because the fsh are tight many times on cover and it
is easy to miss them. Work especially the breaks or ledges
when the point or ridge drops off into deep water. This
where the big bass I mentioned above was caught.
Other patterns I like in January are Bill Lewiss
Rat-LTraps which I work over and around submerged
hydrilla. I love some of their new color series with one
favorite being the Rayburn Red Zombie. I will also have
a 1 oz Stanley Thumper or a 1 oz Jeane Tackle(double
willow) spinnerbait on which I will slow-roll for a big bite
using 17 lb Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon on the outside
edge of grass lines in 4 to 12 feet. On tough days I also
love Stanleys Swimmax jig series in 3/8 and 1/2 oz with
favorite colors black/blue. Finally, during warm-ups in
January I like to downsize to 10 lb line and wacky rig a
5 inch Senko around the outside edge of the grass in 6
to 14 feet.
CRAPPIE: Currently the crappie are hot at the Chicken
Coop with limits every day the weather will allow you to
get on the river. The fsh have been holding in 25 to 30 feet
with both live shiners and jigs. We have had some heavy
rain (Thank you God) and the run-off may be enough to
muddy up the river at the Coop. If it does, the fshing there
will taper off and even quit if it gets heavily stained. You
must have clear water for The Coop to produce. If it stays
clear January will be super on the river.

Change Your Fishing
For 2012
OK, its a new year and time to make lots of changes. Last year you
bought a new $50,000 bass boat, added a brand new towing vehicle
(that gets a whopping 6 mpg), spent a small fortune on fshing tackle,
and you still fnished dead last in your local bass club. BUMMER!
So what are you planning to do about it during 2012? If your
answer is nothing, then put this Lakecaster down and go back to
your Twinkies and reality show re-runs on TV. If you are serious about
improving your fshing skills and dont want this years results looking
like some of those horrible charts we see on the stock market channel
then this article should be very helpful.
2012 is the time to get back to the basics. Why are you carrying
around those 40 rod and reels when 25 will do just as well? If you
have a bunch of low-gear ratio reels throw them away because thats
another reason that you arent catching as many fsh. If you use the
high-ratio reels (fast retrieve) they will get the fsh in quicker and
the bass has less time to jump off DUH! And forget about all that
fuorocarbon vs. monoflament vs. braid line nonsense. That stuff is
just a bunch of marketing gimmicks for manufacturers. All of those
pros that tell you to re-spool new line on your reels after each trip get
their line free. The easiest way to solve this problem is to buy a 25,000
yard spool of 80# test monoflament and you are good to go for the
next 20 years. Sure its a bit harder to cast, but when you get a birds-
nest it is much easier to untangle.
The root cause of most anglers fshing problems is TV fshing
shows. Everyone on these shows is catching a bass on every cast and
after watching a few of these you are like a buck in rut. You hit the
water with HUGE expectations and after a couple of miserable hours of
no fsh you get VERY DEPRESSED. The key to improving your fshing
attitude is to not watch shows that will give you an ulcer and make
you grumpier than you already are. Stick with the wholesome shows
that have quality and meaning such as Rap-N-Clap, Judge Judy and
the Sci-Fi channel.
If you are a topwater fsherman get smart. All of the bellies of the
baits are white and that is what the fsh sees. The secret is to fip the
bait over, re-drill the hook holes and then place the hooks on the top
of the lure. Fishing the bait upside down will give the bass a good
look at the many wonderful and fashy colors available that made you
buy that bait in the frst place.
And forget about having all of those clever colors for crankbaits
because all the fsh sees is a blur as the bait speeds past its nose. Black
and white colors will do just fne. Another tip for crankbaits is to place
them in boiling water for about 45 seconds. They will swell up like a
pregnant guppy and look just like a miniature Big O. The bass just go
crazy over them.
Plastics are another issue that needs to be addressed. Does a
watermelon/red really catch more fsh that a watermelon/candy,
watermelon/seed or a watermelon/pumpkin? I think not. If you are
really that concerned with slight color changes just buy watermelon
worms in bulk and then let them set for a couple of hours in a mixture
of tuna fsh oil, buttermilk and a couple drops of Easter egg dye. The
dye will change the bait to the hue you want and the tuna fsh oil and
buttermilk will be absorbed into the bait making it irritable to the
bass. You probably didnt know it but tuna fsh oil and buttermilk is
recognized to be one of the best fsh attractants known to man.
Believe it or not many people in past years caught bass from the
shore, small boats and even inner tubes. However, there is not much
image building doing this so I realize that you are probably going
to do most of your fshing from a fashy bass boat. The majority of
todays anglers spend so much time worrying about the pitch of their
prop, how fast their trolling motor can push the boat and whether
or not the blip they see on their side-scan is a fsh or a tin can that
they lose their concentration for fshing. Down-sizing is the key.
Replace that 300 hp gas guzzler with a 7 hp and use oars rather
than worrying about all of those trolling motor and battery problems.
Its cheaper, you get more exercise and your use of high priced fuel
decreases drastically.
And for you jig fshermen I have two tips that will add many pounds
of bass to your bag. The frst is one that recently won a few major
tournaments so I am sure that the pros will be disappointed that I am
revealing their secret. Use mayonnaise on your jigs and they will slip
and slide easily through the heavy matted grass. The second is the use
of Velcro instead of plastic for your trailer. The bass bite the Velcro and
their teeth stick and you just reel um in.
I havent forgotten you guys that like specialty fshing rods. Instead
of worrying about regular guides, mini-guides or micro guides, simply
drill a small hole in the rod immediately above the reel. Insert the
line through the shaft of the rod and out the tip. Presto no more rod
guide problems.
We have been secretly working a proto-type device call the Scan-
All that has had outstanding results. Simply buy two swimming face
masks (those that are round) and then pop out the lens. Now epoxy
the lens to both ends of a section of four-inch PVC. I like to use about
a six foot section but have had success with those that are 12 feet in
length. Simply insert the tube into the water and you can easily check
out the spot before you cast a lure. Duct tape a small magnifying
glass to the viewing end and you can vary the display from 2X to 10X
enlargement.
We have also been working on a new lure called the Jaw Jerker
that is basically a soft bodied swimbait that has two chambers. The
front chamber is used to insert a special capsule that is composed of

NASA grade Alka Seltzer-Plus chemicals. When the bait hits the water
the capsule activates and the bait goes crazy running to and froe,
up and down in the water. The capsule will last for about two hours
before you need to change it. The rear chamber is designed to accept
two capsules. The frst provides a blood trail as the bait is moving
and the second lets out a tuna fsh oil and buttermilk scent. The bait
also has a transmitter in the nose that emits a high-pitch squeak like
a fne-tuned buzzbait. Look for the Jaw Jerker soon on your local
info-commercials.
We have been doing quite a bit of experimenting and here are a
couple of quick tips. Keep a small shop vacuum in your boat and when
you fip a bass in just stick the suction end to the side of the bass and
it will keep him from founcing around while you measure, weigh,
etc. If you have battery terminal problems such as corrosion just
have someone weld the terminal connections to the battery and the
corrosion problems will disappear. Also if you have prop damage, such
as a piece knocked out, just mold the area with aluminum foil and
once you get it the way you want it just apply epoxy over the area, slap
some paint on it and it is almost as good as new.
I also recommend that you revisit all of the way-points you used
during 2011 and delete those where you didnt catch fsh. Why fsh
them again if they were worthless the frst time? Same philosophy with
the lures. If the lure didnt catch bass throw it away. Why waste space
in your tacklebox on unproductive baits? Thats nonsense.
Last but certainly not least lets discuss this recent rage the
Alabama Rig. The rig is ok, but we have been testing what we call
the Brazil Rig. This is so neat. It is designed like umbrella arms but
titanium Z3o2 heavy duty wire is used. There are 18 arms so you can
attach and fsh 18 baits on one cast. Just think how your partner will
feel when you make one cast and get a two-day limit. This rig should
be at your local tackle dealer by the end of February and expect long
lines because the Brazil Rig will help anglers win lots of tournaments.
Well I think that is about enough tips to improve your fshing
during 2012. I sure dont want to give your brain over-load with
all this technical information. I feel very comfortable that these tips
will get you out of the gutter and back into that elite winners circle.

January is when gardeners get cabin fever and start prowling for
projects.
Its too early to plant a spring garden but not too early to start
seedlings indoors. The key to success is DONT dont water too
much, dont overfertilize, dont try to rush things up.
Make your own growing mix:
According to AgriLife vegetables specialists, you need a loose,
fertile, disease free soil mix. Mix your own using one part sandy
loam (yard dirt in East Texas), one part peat, one part vermiculite.
Peat and vermiculite are available from most farmers feednseed
stores and garden centers.
Peat helps the mix hold water and provides nutrients. Vermiculite
makes the mix light and easy for tender young roots to spread out.
Sterilize your mix by flling disposable aluminum turkey pans
(yes, you can recycle the ones you used for dinner), cover with foil
and heat at least one hour in a 160 degree oven.
This precaution gets rid of harmful fungi, bacteria, most weed
seeds and nematodes, the pesky critters that knot up tomato roots.
Containers:
Any shallow container at least 3 inches deep makes a suitable
plant growing box. Use milk cartons, foam cups or plastic
containers. It seems likes mayonnaise, nuts, all kinds of food and
half the stuff under the Christmas tree comes in clear plastic bottles,
tubes, boxes and trays. Any of these make perfect mini-greenhouses.
Planting & care:
A plastic water bottle is a perfect example of a mini-greenhouse
that you can have for free. Fill half-full with your growing mix,
drop in a couple of seeds and poke in place with a pencil. Read your
seed package instructions to see how deep to plant.
This is where the DONTs get important. A tablespoon or two of
water is all your need. Put the lid back on. DONT water any more
unless it needs it.
How do you know when it needs it? DONT set it in direct sun or
you will steam bake the plant. (Close to a patio door or window but
not in the window.) If it has enough water, a light mist will form on
the sides.
If heavy dew forms instead, you used too much water. Open the
lid and let it air out for a few days. You can even poke a folded paper
towel in to wipe the sides. Itll be fne.
If no mist forms, its too dry and you can add another tablespoon
of water.
It may take 2 to 3 weeks until you have a seedling.
What and when to plant:
Good candidates for water-bottle greenhouses include peppers,
tomatoes, melons, squash, cucumbers, beans and peas. If the plant
gets too big before its warm enough to plant outdoors, cut off the
top of the bottle and continue growing inside. However, as soon
as your greenhouse loses its top, you will have to water more
frequently; just dont overdo it. Soil should be kept moist but not
wet.
At this point, it would be a good idea to poke a small hole in the
bottom for drainage, and then you need to set the bottles in a tray
so water doesnt drain onto your foor.
Plants arent ready to be planted outdoors until nighttime
temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Yes, we know its
tempting when the frst warm sunny day in February arrives, but
thats probably too soon.
Tomatoes will be ready to transplant in about 6 weeks and
peppers take more like 8 weeks. Melons grow fast and may be ready
for transplant in as little as 2 to 3 weeks.

Transplanting:
When the ground is warm enough, you need to harden off the
seedlings. This means you dont take them from their nice warm
home directly to the harsh real world all at once.
Whether they are in water bottles or turkey pans, take off the lid
(if you havent already), take them out to a shady spot near their
intended home in the garden, and let them spend a few days getting
used to the new environment. Gradually move them into more sun
(yes, plants can sunburn just like you). Water lightly only when
plants show signs of wilting.
Plant seedlings at the same level as they were in their container
and frm the soil around them gently. Water immediately and every
day for the frst few days.
Fertilize at this point and decrease watering. For most vegetables,
one or two slow deep waterings a week is better than daily watering.

Area Club Updates
Our fnal tournament for the 2011 season was on December 10th on Lake Sam Rayburn.
Using jigs and crankbaits the team of Dean Jones and Jeff Latham weighed in 5 fsh that
weighed 15.58 lbs. to take frst place. Larry Byrd and Ricky Fuller brought in 5 fsh weighing
14.29 lbs. to secure a second place fnish. Byrd had the big fsh of the tournament, a 5.62 lber.,
which was caught on a deep diving crankbait. David Katchur and Stewart Hunt fshed with
Carolina rigged Flukes and took third place with 10.28 lbs
Dean Jones was awarded Angler of The Year for the 2011 season, for an overall weight for of
170.19 lbs. Jones also weighed in the largest fsh for the year, a 10.28 lber, which was caught
during our February tournament that was held on Toledo Bend. Mike Collins received the heaviest
individual stringer award for 2011, for his 5 fsh tournament limit that weighed 22.38 lbs.
Our next tournament will be on Toledo Bend on January 7, 2012
Frank Davis won the Many Bass Clubs December 2011 tournament with a record setting
fve fsh limit weighing 25.70 lbs. Fishing a grass covered hump in 8 to 12 feet of water, in the
Housen area of Toledo Bend, Davis was using a Carolina rigged lizard. Davis fve fsh stringer
included a 6.68 lb and 9.44 lb lunker. Harvey Coward fnished in second place with another
very impressive fve fsh limit weighing 21.75 lbs & Bill Ligon was the third place winner with a
fve fsh limit weighing 15.48 lbs. Great stringers!
A total of 53 fsh were caught weighing 141 lbs for an average fsh weight of 2.70 lbs.
The Many Bass Clubs 2011 tournament year has ended with one of the best fnishes ever
recorded. A shoot out to the end, Jimmy Campbell won the prestigious Angler of the Year Award
for 2011. Congratulations Jimmy on a great year and a special thanks to Harvey Coward for his
competitive fnish to a great tournament fshing year.
The Many Bass Clubs annual Champions Tournament has been cancelled and will be
rescheduled for next spring.
The 409 Bass Club held their 2011 championship on Lake Sam Rayburn on Saturday
December 3rd. 11 anglers competed for the all cash purse and championship crown. Anglers
faced mostly cloudy skies with a stiff south wind. Water temps were in the middle to upper 50s.
Most anglers reported success fshing shallow grass with traps and crankbaits. There were 15
fsh brought to the scales with a total weight of 36 lbs yielding a 2.4 lb average per fsh.
Eric and Marcus Van Horn took home 1st place with a 3 fsh limit weighing 11.55 lbs. Their
creel was anchored by Erics 6.26 lb pig. Eric Van Horn also had the heaviest individual weight
at 11.06 lbs making him the 2011 (409) Bass Club Champion. Bubba Courts and Ben Adams
weighed in 6.07 lbs to give them a 2nd place fnish, and Michael Stephenson and Ronnie Smith
took home 3rd place with 2.96 lbs. Ben Adams also took home the Shimano Chronarch reel that
was given away.
Congratulations to our winners and our 2011 Champion. The 409 Bass Club would like to
thank Simon Outftters, Daleys Hunt and Fish, Filter Resources, R1-Bass, and Ace Image Wear for
their support this season. The (409) Bass Club will be back in full swing with the frst tournament
in 2012 scheduled sometime in February.

Fish & Critter Tales
Gerald Bilbo and his great grandson, Braden Norton
both from Vidor, TX with an impressive 140 lb. south-
east Texas doe that Paw killed.
Anthony S. Bienvenu, who served in the Navy
from April 2007 thru April 2011, made a great
shot killing his rst ever buck which was a nice
190 lb. 9 point whitetail.
7 yr old Bryce Burkhead shot this redhead and
teal while hunting with his Dad near Jackson Hill
Marina.
A Westlake hunter shot a 31-point buck, but it wont go into
the record books. Jacey Broussard from Westlake had been
tracking the buck for more than three weeks leading up to
eventually shooting it. The buck scored a Boone and Crock-
ett score of 226 and the record book score for Louisiana
currently stands at 195. Broussards buck wont go into the
record books because it was a tagged deer, meaning it was
raised on a ranch.
Gene Trahan, owner of River Road Whitetails ranch said
We honestly didnt know he was out. We cant think of a
better person to have shot it. (Her) rst deer, and all.
Johnny Watkins with his son Garrett, who is proudly displaying his rst
sh!!!!! Crappie was caught on a Stanley Mini Wedge spinnerbait.
Holly Park Marina guests Joe Dunn and brother Johnny got 62
# of crappie in the Sabine River on Toledo Bend Dec.2 - they
left them biting when they limited out. These caught near the
famous chicken coop area.
