Chivalry, Leon Gautier, Page 114: “The Prince of the Celestial Chivalry is St. Michael: he
is the conqueror in the great and invisible battle in which were vanquished those vassals of
God who one day revolted against the Sovereign Lord. I hope, my son, that you and I will soon
go together, and perform the pilgrimage of 'St. Michael de Peril de la Mer,' for the archangel is
the great patron, not only of chivalry, but of the whole of France.”

“And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and
the dragon fought and his angels: And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any
more in heaven.” (Apocalypse 12:7-8) St. Michael is indeed a great prince of Chivalry. There
are many knights who were devoted to this Archangel. Firstly Holy Scripture attests to the zeal
that St. Michael had for the Lord. “And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying: Now is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: because
the accuser of our brethren is cast forth, who accused them before our God day and night.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of the testimony, and
they loved not their lives unto death.”(Apocalypse 12:10-11) St. Michael attests to the fact that
his brethren, knights & soldiers, overcame their enemies by giving their lives for the Catholic
faith in battle, “they loved not their lives unto death.”

“But I will tell thee what is set down in the scripture of truth: and none is my helper in all
these things, but Michael your prince.” (Daniel 10:21) [Catholic Commentary "Michael your
prince"... The guardian general of the church of God.] St. Michael fulfills the first, the second,
and the eighth Commandments of the Code of Chivalry:

1) Thou shalt believe all that the Church teaches, and shalt observe all its directions.
2) Thou shalt defend the Church.
8) Thou shalt never lie, and shall remain faithful to thy pledged word.

“But at that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy
people.” (Daniel 12:1) St. Michael also fulfills the role of protector of the weak, orphan, and
widow. St. Michael is fulfilling the third Commandment of the Code of Chivalry:

3) Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them.
9) Thou shalt be generous, and give largess to everyone.
10) Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against
Injustice and Evil.

The name Michael is defined as: “Who is as [like] God?” St. Michael's name signifies a battle
cry as well. “And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the
dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels: And they prevailed not, neither was their
place found any more in heaven.” (Apocalypse 12:7-8) St. Michael's country is heaven. He
casted Satan out of Heaven because Satan in an enemy of God. St. Michael also fulfills the
fourth and fifth Commandment of the Code of Chivalry:

4) Thou shalt love the country in the which thou wast born.
5) Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy.
6) Thou shalt make war against the Infidel without cessation, and without mercy.

“But the prince of the kingdom of the Persians resisted me one and twenty days: and behold
Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I remained there by the king of the
Persians.” (Daniel 10:13) [Catholic Commentary: "The prince"... That is, the angel guardian of
Persia: who according to his office, seeking the spiritual good of the Persians was desirous
that many of the Jews should remain among them.] St. Michael is the Prince of the Heavenly
Host. He was fulfilling his feudal duties by coming to the aid of Daniel. The word Angel:
means messenger. St. Michael was completing his duties. Thus fulfills the seventh
Commandment of the Code of Chivalry:

7) Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of
God.
