ABSTRACT: Possibility of arsenic (III) removal from groundwater to meet drinking water standard of 10 g/L in conventional Fe-removal by aeration-iron filtration process was investigated. The process of simultaneous oxidation of Fe (II), As (III) and adsorption of oxidized As (V) on in-situ formed FeOOH was proposed and checked. It proves that raw water containing of about 200 g/L As (III) even at as high as 8 mg/L of Fe (II) conventional aeration adsorption process could not produce water at the standard of 10 8

g/L As. Meanwhile As was removed exclusively by As (III) adsorption on in-situ formed FeOOH, As (III) was not oxidized. The process of As (III) removal was enhanced by addition of small amount of oxidants like KMnO4, NaClO, and H2O2. In these cases, along with Fe (II) oxidation to form solid FeOOH rapid oxidation of As (III) into As (V) occurred. As (V) showed excellent adsorption capacity on newly formed solid FeOOH, leading to enhance As removal. As removal rate order was: KMnO4 > NaClO > H2O2, and target As concentration of 10 g/L could be achieved. It proves that the older the FeOOH, the worse As removal.

ABSTRACT: Marine algae are group of botanical ancestor on the sea water; they have had the aptitude for diminishing pollution in the sea water. Thus, in 80 years of XX century, Human has made use of it to diminish pollution in the sea water. Recently, in Vietnam, there have had some studies on the aptitude for absorbing some nutrients from the sea water of marine algae. Especially, in Cat Ba archipelago, the aquaculture in floatcage has been very strongly developed and it was eliminated so much organic-nutrient to the sea water. It is one of the causes of marine pollution. Thus, the study on the aptitude for diminishing pollution in the sea water of marine algae is necessary. For assessment, the aptitude for diminishing pollution in the sea water of Kappaphycus alvazazii (Doty), Centre for Research, Consultation on Marine Resources and Environment, (Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association) has carried out the project: The experimental on waster water treatment by 11

Kappaphycus alvazazii (Doty) from 2006 until 2007. The survey and sampling for determining parameters of seawater quality were performed at 0h, 6h, 12h and 24h (from beginning of the experiment). The parameters researching are Temperature, Salinity, Turbidity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Ammonia (NH4+), Nitrite (NO2-), Nitrate (NO3-), Phosphate (PO4-3). The results of study showed that: - Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate concentrations in the sea water in the study area were extended the permitted standard, according to ASEAN criteria, averagely by 2 to 3 times. - The turbidity was lessened at early 6 hours of the experiment, approximate 17%, - The pH value was rapidly increased at early 6 hours of the experiment, approximate 0.62 units, - The content of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was very rapidly increased at early 6 hours of the experiment, approximate 129 %, - The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) value was lessened at early 12 hours of the experiment, approximate 23 %, - The content of Ammonia (NH4+) was very rapidly lessened at early 12 hours of the experiment, approximate 80 %, - The content of Nitrite (NO2-) was very rapidly lessened at early 12 hours of the experiment, approximate 54 %, - The content of Phosphat (PO4-3) was lessened at early 24 hours of the experiment, approximate 36 %, - The content of Nitrate (NO3-) was lessened at early 24 hours of the experiment, approximate 21 %.

ABSTRACT: Several types of wastewater containing salt with various concentrations need to be treated to remove nitrogen. The negative impact of salt on biological activity of nitrifies and their acclimatization with new environment was investigated. With the experiment on the effect of salinity, ammonium oxidation rate decreases following line function when salinity increases. The results of adjustability shows that the salt content up to 6 has nearly no impact on the activity of micro organism, slight effect from 12 15 of salt, and strong effect when salt concentration is over 20. Results also points out that it takes certain time for microorganism to acclimatize with new environment.

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this paper is to present the results of 2D numerical simulation of algae biomass in estuaries. The modeling aspects of algae biomass in estuary like flow, algae concentration and the influence of the physical factors, hydro biological and hydro chemical processes are presented. The biological process interacts with the physical and thermal mechanisms. Emphasis is on dissolved oxygen and its related processes involving primary production of phytoplankton (photosynthesis), algae growth kinetics, respiration, death, and other related processes in the system such as nutrients, lights, water temperature, photosynthesis inhibition, predators,...in the aquatic ecosystem. The governing equations with initial and boundary conditions are discussed and the numerical solution technique is proposed. The method of finite elements is used for numerical 21

computation of 2D-algae model in estuary. The numerical simulation results of flow and algae concentration tested against several one-dimensional analytical solutions. This model allows the temporal and spatial prediction of unsteady flow characteristics, as well as the distribution of algae in estuaries. The model is used for simulation of algae in Van Uc estuary. 18 M HNH THNG K M T NG HC KT TINH CACO3

ABSTRACT: Package plants are getting more and more popular not only in drinking water treatment, but also in wastewater treatment. There are some processes used to design such kinds of facilities. They are extended to aeration, contact stabilization, SBR, RBC, oxidation ditch, BMR, physico-chemical treatment etc. In this report, two options for pre-engineered wastewater treatment plant were studied. It reveales that plant based on principle of Japanese Jokaso using contact stabilization by biological submerged anaerobic and aerobic filters was well suited for on-site treatment of hospital or similar wastewaters. Although relatively high cost of investment, MBR is another promising option with the best effluents quality, that can be re-used to reduce the treatment cost.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, environmental pollution caused by domestic waste water is a serious problem in our country. Especially, tourist sites and long-distance vehicles such as train, ship, etc. have not had a specific system to collect and treat domestic waste water. Thus, to guarantee a healthy environment, it is necessary to invest properly in treating domestic waste water before pouring into the environment. Johkasou is a method used widely in Japan to treat domestic waste water. Many good results have gained under this method. In the scope of this research, the author focused on assessing the effectiveness of treating domestic waste water under Johkasou. The assessment is based on two basic criteria, BOD5 and COD. The obtained results show that: - Waste water after treating process has the content of BOD5 and COD that can meet B standard. The proportion of BOD5 and COD reduces considerably after aerobic processes and anaerobic processes. - The rate of COD/BOD5 treated is rather equal to the rate of COD/BOD5 in the input water. - The rate of COD/BOD5 treated is quite stable at each stage in the treating system. These above results show that Johkasou can be applied to construct the system of toilets, which would be installed widely in sparsely populated areas, tourist sites, and in traffic vehicles. This system would bring about great benefits in socio-economic as well as environmental aspects. 22 NGHIN CU QUY TRNH X L NC THI NHUM BNG PHNG PHP KEO T KT HP VI OXY HA C XC TC VI TC NHN OXY HA H2O2 26

ABSTRACT: Decreasing nutrient concentration in culture rearing water by Seawater Biofilter Recirculation Aquaculture Tank System (SBRATS) is nutrient inorganic processes due to microbiology systems of biofilter tanks. When fish reach 10 -15cm, we carried out experiment and monitoring. Simultaneously, residual food and wastes are highest quality. The first results shows that SBRATS operated well. Unstable organic nutrients became complete inorganic and did not accumulate. Inorganic processes of stable nutrients werent complete so stable nutrients accumulated. For this reason, new water after long time recirculation should be exchanged. 25 SOME EXAMPLES OF USING A COMBINATION OF ONLINE AND OFF-LINE CHROMATOGRAPHIC AND SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS IN ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION AND IN SCREENING OF SECONDARY METABOLITES FROM MICRO-ORGANISMS L.H. ABSTRACT: One example of our research concerning environmental investigation is the rapid identification of the intermediates obtained from biological and chemical treatment reactions of reactive dyes by 29

using a combination of on-line couplings LC-DAD-ESI-MS and onflow LC-UV-NMR. The mutual completion of structure information delivered by the spectroscopic methods UV/VIS, MS and NMR is of special importance for rapid identification of the intermediates directly in reaction mixtures.

ABSTRACT: This research paper aims at As, Cd baseline concentrations in oyster (Meretrix meretrix) as they relate to concentrations in water column and sediment in Thai Binh (Viet Nam). In order to conduct these assessments, total 96 samples were collected in summer of 2007, including 80 oyster samples, 8 water samples and 8 sediment samples. The results indicate that oyster significantly bioaccumulates As, Cd from water than those in sediment. These observations confirmed the fact that metals in water phase are biologically available to oysters and that the oysters can be used as 30

good indicators of spatial variation of the heavy metals in aquatic system.

ABSTRACT: Hai Phong port is the second largest in Viet Nam (after Saigon port), and the most important in the economy in the North of the country. The port was built along the Cam and the Bach Dang estuary, near the World Natural Heritage of Ha Long Bay and the World Biosphere Reserve - Cat Ba. Ecologically, this is a high biodiversity area with typical tropical marine ecosystems like mangrove forest, sea grass, soft bottom and coral reef ecosystem. Port activities, including channel dredging, have caused bad effects on the surrounding environment and the eco-system. However, this issue has not been evaluated yet. This paper, in the first place, gives an initial overview of some impacts of dredging on the marine environment and eco-systems and in the second place, proposes some solutions to reduce its negative effects.

ABSTRACT: From the end of January to the beginning of May 2007, the floating oil attached the coastal areas and some islands of 20 provinces in large scale, from Ha Tinh to the south. The consequences of this event are serious both in short term and in the 34

long run. Meanwhile the cause of spilled oil has not been determined. The existing suppositions can be divided into two main groups. Firstly, the oil comes from offshore production sites inside or outside Vietnamese Sea. Secondly, the oil may come from transportation or other nautical activities which intentionally or unintentionally have dumped oil on their routes, or shipping accidents on the sea. Besides, there are some different opinions, but little persuasion. Based on the analysis of existing information and data, the author of this paper indicates that the cause of this event does not come from any concrete perpetrator at any concrete moment, but from the annually accumulative consequences of oil wasted into the sea from different sources. Of which, the waste oil and ballast from shipping on the international nautical routes or in harbor waters are the sources of most importance. The wasted oil of multi-sources has been being accumulated into slicks, concentrating in the determined offshore waters and floating on the sea going after the relatively stable currents by seasons. The phenomena of El - Nino since last September has made the climatic turbulence and changed in hydrological structure of sea. Therefore, the offshore water bearing oil slicks has spred to coast and floating oil has been appeared in a large scale. 30 QUN L TNG HP MI TRNG BIN TRONG HOT NG HNG HI - L THUYT V THC TIN INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT FOR MARINE ENVIRONMENT IN NAUTICAL ACTIVITIES - THEORY AND PRACTICE

ABSTRACT: In the world, environmental management in ports is difficult and quite complex because of large space and various actions in port and around it. EMS in ports in the world accords with ISO:14000, EMAS and PERS systems. PERS system implement environmental management based on self diagnose for environmental performance (SDEP) in each ports and self EMS implementation accords with these environmental issues. Nowadays, PERS is widely applied in many countries in the world and some ports in Vietnam. The Dinh Vu liquefaction port is the one of the utilities of Dinh Vu Industrial Zone, which has been put into operation since 09/2003. Dinh Vu Liquefaction port is located in Bach Dang estuary with high environmental sensitivity, containing many ecosystems such as mangrove, coral reef, sea grass and many economics activities. Therefore, Dinh Vu Development Joint Venture Company (jetty owner) as well as all our clients has been clearly aware of port environment protection. Since 2006, Dinh Vu liquefaction port has been one of three ports in Vietnam that was applied the model PERS to manage ports environment (including Dinh Vu liquefaction port, Da Nang port 39

group and Ba Ria Vung Tau port group). The environmental polices according to PERS guidelines were identified and operated. The implementation of EMS in DinhVu liquefaction port initially achieved some noticeable results: major environmental issues were identified, environmental polices were built up, detail actions were implemented to reduce risks for port and ports environment.

ABSTRACT: Oil-spilling incidents often leave serious consequences on the natural environment, socio-economy and human civilization. Spilled oil causes environmental pollution and negative effects on marine creatures on a large area, directly affecting littoral peoples life and economic activities related to exploiting and using marine resources such as raising and catching aquatic products, tourism and salt-making, etc. Preventing and responding to oil spills are necessary but complicated and difficult, requires a closed coordination and organization among forces and suitable technical methods application. To restrict the influences and consequences of oil spill, Hai Phong Maritime Port Authorities has presided over a research Building up contingency plan responding to oil spill by booms in water area of Hai Phong port. Many pressing responding solutions have been proposed like: - Collecting, processing and systematizing all related information and data; - Setting up a practical process for responding oil spill by booms; - Practicing using booms to contain the spilled oil area, 41

preventing oil from spreading, recovering and treating spilled oil. 34 XU HNG CA NHNG V DU TRN T TU DU TRONG GIAI ON 1997 - 2006 TREND OF OIL SPILLS FROM TANKERS IN THE PERIOD 1997 - 2006

ABSTRACT: In Vietnam, Da Lat is the only city with forest inside. Forest takes up 55,6% of the citys total natural area of 39,104. However, inventorying and monitoring the development of the forest is a very complicated and difficult task because of the slope topography, and sharp isolation, making travel difficult. More socio economic development makes forest management more complicated. Meanwhile, the outmoded management method fails to meet the requirement of current modern management and deal with a huge amount of information. The need for an effective information management system on the computer to be developed and introduced to increase the management efficiency is extremely urgent. The application of GIS in the forest management and protection is suitable under the current situation because GIS help simplify the forest management and provides quick and accurate information. 45

ABSTRACT: Very close to the Ha Long Bay - the World Heritage site and Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, Bach Dang estuary area is a high biodiversity place with typical tropical marine ecosystems such as mangrove forest, sea grass, soft bottom etc. This area also includes 48

Hai Phong Port - the gateway of North provinces to the sea and the second biggest port in Vietnam. Together with socio-economic development of our country, the annually cargo through Hai Phong port increasingly incessantly continues. It also increases the density of the traffic and tankers. If oil spill accidents occured in this area, it would have a big influence on marine environment and resources. In order to assess the spatial influence of oil spill after oil tanker accident happens, a numerical model was applied to simulation of oil spreading in some scenarios case of oil tank accidents. This paper shows some the results of simulation and prediction oil spill in Bach Dang estuaries area. This is a part of the results of the VAST project 2006-2007 To assess the pollution recession in Bach Dang estuaries area and propose protective solution, which carried out by Institute of Marine environment and resources.

ABSTRACT: Wastes arising from marine activities include three shapes: gas, water, and solid. Of which, sewage and solid waste have been threats to sea environment. The waste-from-ship management becomes an obligatory condition for ships. In Viet Nam and the World, there have had rules of managing waste from ships, collecting at seaports and dumping into the sea. Managing waste from ships in Viet Nam in general and in Hai Phong area in particular has had a lot of limitations and difficulties. ABSTRACT: Oil is the compound of hydrocarbon and other substances containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. Its density is lighter than water, when oil spreads on water surface, the film of oil is created, and structure and characteristic of oil are degenerated. Oil slick causes serious impacts on the ecosystem and landscape. A large oil slick would cause disasters for environment, marine creatures and peoples life. Whereas a small oil slick would reduce the quality of aquatic or other marine products (salt-making industry) due to creating heavy smell for those products. As for landscape, oil slick worsens water quality, the beach would become less beautiful-looking, causing negative effects on tourism and aquaculture. Nowadays, oil spill is one of the environmental disasters caused by ships collision, oil exploitation and transportation incidents. Vietnam is a country with the coastline of more than 3200km long. Along the coastline, there are many estuarine gulf and bays, giving convenience for building sea ports and international maritime route from Indian Ocean, passing Malacca strait, then Northern Gulf to North-East Asia. Therefore, oil spills has been on an increase. For preventing oil spill in the long run, the National contingency plan for responding to oil spill have been adopted by Vietnam government, aiming at coordinating with the National Life and Save Committee, appropriate authorities, localities, sea ports all over the country to respond to oil spill and keep the environment 58
