In1954,thelaunchoftheLeicaM-System,withitsbrilliantcombinedviewfinderandcoupledrangefinder,opened upvastnewhorizonsinreportageandartisticphotography.Intheeyesofphotographers,aLeicaMhasalways beentheperfecttoolforcapturingthefascinationofamomentdiscreetly,silently,withouthesitation,andwith perfectimagequality.Indeed,unsurpassedimagequalitywas,is,andalwayswillbethekeyfoundingprincipleof Leica.Everyinnovationanddevelopmentsincethenhasbeenmeasuredbythisstrictcriterion.Withthelaunchof theLeicaM8in2006,anewerainthehistoryofrangefindercamerasbegan:theM-Systemwentdigital.Then,in 2009,LeicasetafurthermilestoneindigitalphotographywiththeLeicaM9.TheM9isthefirsteverrangefinder camerawithafull-frame24x36mmsensorin35mmformat,andisalsothesmallestfull-formatdigitalsystem cameratheworldhaseverseen.ItisnoexaggerationtostatethattheLeicaM9isthemostsignificantLeicasince thelandmarkLeicaM3of1954.

Onlythecallsoftheseagullsdisturbthesilenceasthemorningsunbeginsitsdailybattleagainsttheseasons heavycloakofmist.TheinhabitantsofVenicecallthiscityLaSerenissimaafondandreverentialallusionto itsmedievalstatusastheMostSereneRepublicandonthisMarchmorningitseemstostillbesleeping.But thisisnttrueforallofitsinhabitants.Balancedlikedancers,AlviseandhisfriendTobiaareintheirboat,rowingit forwardswithrhythmic,powerfulstrokes.TheyglidepastthebeachesofthelegendaryLidodiVenezia,perhaps themostglamorousbeachresortintheworldduringtheBellepoque.Onceaweek,thetwofriendsmeetfora sessionofmorningsport,Venetianstyle,beforeAlvisemakeshiswaytohisworkplace,notfarfromthefamous SaintMarksSquare. AlviseCatulloRagazzois22yearsoldandoneofaround700gondoliers,apartofVenetianlifeasessentialtothe cityastheGrandCanalitself.Atjust18yearsold,Alvisefirstenteredtheeliteandancientguild.Likeallother aspiringgondoliers,hehadtofirstpassthegruelingentranceexamattheScuolaGondolieribeforehecouldbegin hisone-yeartraining.Attheendofthetraining,amastergondoliercheckseachcandidatessuitabilitybefore allowingthemtotakethefinalanddecisiverowingtest.And,ofcourse,onlythebestmakeitthrough,asAlvise tellsuswithawink,butalsowithanoteofpride.Thegondolierslicensetocarrypassengersisissuedbythecity ofVeniceasithasbeenforcenturiesandislinkedtooneindividualgondola.

OnthewaytohishomeintheSanPolodistrict,AlvisecrossesSaintMarksSquare.Atthismorninghour,itis practicallydesertedandbathedinagoldenlightthatrevealsallitsbreathtakingmagic.Alittlefurther,closeby theRialtoBridge,hemeetshisoldteacher,AldoPagan,foramorningchatintheCantinadoMori.Thisclassic Venetianwineandsnackbarhasbeeninexistencesince1462,anditshistoricinteriorcreatestheperfectambiance forphilosophizingabouttheartofthegondolier.Aldo,whoalsohappenstobethegrandfatherofTobia,Alvises friend,workedasagondolierfor43years.Nowheispassionateaboutpassingonhisknowledgetotheyounger generation.AmonghisstudentsisGiorgiaBoscolo,thesolefemalegondolierinVenice.WithAldo,theycan discussthefinerpointsoftheirvocationsuchasLaMadonetta,themostdifficultcurveinVenicesnetworkof canals.Forgondoliers,itmeansmaneuveringthegondolathroughaninety-degreeintersectionbetweenCanale diCapesaroandtheCanaledelaMadonetta,withonlyacoupleofcentimetersofroomattheprowandstern. Ashedoesatthestartofeveryworkday,Alviseputsonthestrawhatandtypicalblue-and-whitestripedcostume ofthegondolier,beforeheadingtohisgondolasmooringplace.HegoespastthePalazzoDucaletheDoges PalaceandthenwaitsbythePontedellaCanonica.Itsthestartofastrenuousday:rowingagondolademands notonlyskillandtechnicalprowessbut,aboveall,physicalstrength.Withalengthof10to11meters(32to36 feet)andawidthof1.4meters(4feet7inches),agondolacanweighbetween500and600kilograms(1,100 to1,320pounds).Thefactthatitcanbesteeredsopreciselyisthankstoitsasymmetricconstruction.Todays designistheresultoftheworkofalate19th-centuryboatmakernamedDomenicoTramontin,whoperfected theshapeofthegondola.Sincethen,theleftsideofeachgondolahasbeenmadeafewcentimetershigherand longerthantheright.Thankstothisrefinement,thegondolier,whostandsontheleftandrowsontheright,can steerthroughthewaterinastraightline.Perfectlyevolvedandhighlyfunctional,thegondolaandtheLeica Mcamerahavemuchmoreincommonbothhavealwaysbeenmadebyhand,forexample.Onlytoday,the constructionofaLeicaMutilizesthemostmodernequipmentandtechnology.
