Find the distance between the points (2, 3) and (4, 4).

I just plug the coordinates into the Distance Formula:

Then the distance is sqrt(53), or about 7.28, rounded to two decimal places.
2.

Find the radius of a circle, given that the center is at (2, 3) and the point (1, 2) lies on the circle.

The radius is the distance between the center and any point on the circle, so I need to find the distance: Copyright Elizabeth Stapel 2000-2011 All Rights Reserved

Then the radius is sqrt(10), or about 3.16, rounded to two decimal places.
3.

Find all points (4, y) that are 10 units from the point (2, 1).

I'll plug the two points and the distance into the Distance Formula:

Now I'll square both sides, so I can get to the variable.

This means y = 9 or y = 7, so the two points are (4, 9) and (4, 7).

4.

Use the Distance Formula to find the distance between the points with coordinates (3, 4) and (5, 2).

5.

A triangle has vertices A(12,5), B(5,3), and C(12, 1). Show that the triangle is isosceles. By the Distance Formula,

Because AB = BC, triangle ABC is isosceles.

1. A line passes through (5, 8) with a slope of 2/3. If

another point on this line has coordinates ( x, 12), find x.

2. The vertices of a parallelogram are (3, 6), (9, 13), (3, 1),

and (9, 6). Use the distance formula to verify that opposite sides have equal length. Substitute (x1, y1) = (3, 6) and (x2, y2) = (9, 13) in the distance formula.

Substitute (x2, y2) = (9, 13) and (x3, y3) = (9, 6) in the distance formula.

Substitute (x3, y3) = (9, 6) and (x4, y4) = (3, 1) in the distance formula.

Substitute (x4, y4) = (3, 1) and (x1, y1) = (3, 6) in the distance formula.

Since the d1 = d3 and d2 = d4, the lengths of opposite sites are equal. 3. Determine the distance between the following pair of points to the nearest tenth. (5.2, 6.2), (6.2, 7.2)

Substitute (6.2, 7.2) for (x2, y2) and (5.2, 6.2) for (x1,y1).

Simplify.

Use a calculator. d 1.4

4. Is the triangle with the vertices T (1, 6), U (1, 3), V (1,

5) isosceles?

Find TU using the distance formula.

Substitute the values.

Find UV using the distance formula.

Find TV using the distance formula.

Since no two sides are equal, triangle TUV is not an isosceles triangle.

5. Find the value of a if the distance between the two points

is

units.

Use the distance formula.

Substitute x2 = 2, x1= 4, y2 = a and y1 = 5.

Simplify.

Square both sides. 85 = a2 + 10a + 61 Subtracting 85 from both sides: 0 = a2 + 10a 24 To solve by factoring, find two numbers whose product is 24 and whose sum is 10. 12 and 2 work: (a + 12) (a 2) = 0 By the zero product property, the value of a is 12 or 2.
