MODULE OUTCOMES: At the end of the course, the students should be able to: MODULE DESCRIPTION This course introduces Programming Logic Controller ( PLC ) and its application where programming languages are covered . Topics included are the operation of PLC , ladder diagram , PLC mnemonic codes and introduction of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Learners will be able to apply their understanding of princple and operation of PLC in the handons exercises provided. Understand the operation of PLC unit and programming. Verify match of power supply to power rating of system Check input and output signal of plc unit / electrical system. Verify program sequence of ladder diagram Check hydraulic performance Check pneumatic performance

LEARNING STANDARD performance , condition Describe PLC PERFORMANCE CRITERIA performance,condition, standard 1.1State the name and function according to block diadgram in PLC system . 1.2Identify the main components of PLC according to manufacturers manual. 1.3 State the function of programming console according to standard requirement. 2.1List 3 basic PLC programming languages to describe the sequential control system in accordance to system requirements. 2.2Identify the symbols used in ladder diagram according to standard specification. 2.3Sketch the logic gates to represent the mnemonic codes according to standard. 2.3Identify the PLC mnemonic codes in accordance with the manufacturers manual. 3.1State the application of PLC in accordance to design requirements DC & AC motor/load , hydraulic system, pneumatic system. 4.1Identify the input and output address/data according to ladder diagram. 5.1 Write PLC programming languages using the correct mnemonic codes in accordance with ladder diagram. 5.2 Key-in the codes into the PLC in accordance with PLC 3

Prepare PLC units , load circuits, relay and test manual. Identify power ratings of PLC system

1.1 Apply safety procedures according to safety requirement. 2.1 Identify power ratings of PLC system according to name plate and operation manual. 2.2 Determine the min and max working voltage supply according to specification. 3.1Identify measuring points according to testing procedures. 3.2Compare the measurement between measured and rated power so that it complies with allowed tolerances specified in service manual. 1. Clasiffy the input and output terminals according to specification analog /digital. 2. Identify various types of indicator signal. 3. Identify type of signal from the terminal according to clasification of input and output.

3. Check the status of supply leading to system

1. Start on the program and go to the ladder diagram section according to standard programming procedures. 2. Detect the error and identify types of error according to ladder diagram fault finding procedures.

COMPETENCY : 5 1. Check oil level and temperature CHECK HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE 1.1 Apply safety requirements according to safety standard. 1.2 Explain hydraulic components and types of hydraulic fluid according to basic hydarulic principle. 1.3 Perform visual identification of fluid contamination according to system operating manual. 2.1Generation of pressure , bleeding of air and pressure and limit setting are to comply with valve setting manual. 3.1 Filtration , contamination removal, air and fluid bleeding and the use of correct refill equipment are in accordance to fluid specification. 4.1 Identify various range of pressure according to each application. 4.2 Check main and control pressure according to system operation manual.

COMPETENCY : 6 CHECK PNEUMATIC PERFORMANCE

1. Check air compressor

1.1Apply safety requirements according to safety standard. 1.2 Explain pneumatic components according to basic pneumatic principle. 1.3Start and shut down air compressor according system operation manual. 1.4 Identify leakage at compressor chamber according to standard operating procedure. 2.1 Generate pressure and trace leakage according to standard testing procedure. 2.2 Generation of pressure and limit setting are to comply with valve setting manual. 2.3 Perform Emergency shutdown according to safety procedure. 2.4 Air filter replacement is to comply with system operating manual. 3.1 Read and understand pressure distribution in pneumatic circuit diagram according to specification. 4. Constant pressure regulation, leakage identification, replacement and installation of pneumatic fittings are to comply with standard operation manual.
