5. Is there a significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms? 6. Is there a significant relationship between the respondents level of stress and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms?

Hypotheses of the Study

1. There is no significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the

respondents and their level of academic stress.

2.

There is no significant relationship between the respondents level of academic stress and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms.

3. There is no significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the

Methodology and Sources of Data Three hundred forty seven (347) junior nursing students were utilized as the respondents from the Colleges of Nursing of Wesleyan University Philippines, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, and College of the Immaculate Conception. The researchers used the descriptive type of research in accomplishing this manuscript with the use of questionnaire as instrument in data gathering. The data collected were encoded, analyzed and interpreted using Microsoft Excel. The statistical tools employed were frequency distribution, percent, weighted mean, ranking, and Pearson product moment correlation. Findings

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYPHILIPPINES-College of nursing

1. The Socio-Demographic Profile of Junior Nursing Students Among the respondents, the youngest was 16 and the eldest was 20 with the majority belonging to the 18 years old group with a frequency of 190 (54.75%). Most of these respondents, numbering to 206 (59.37%) belonged to the female group. A huge number of the respondents were single numbering to 323 (93.08%). Most of the junior nursing students economic status were from Php 20,000- 30,000 numbering to 164 (47.26%) and most of them were Roman Catholic numbering to 257 (74.06%).

2.

Description of Junior Nursing Students on the Stressors that affect their Academic

performance 2.1. Physical Item number 1 When I am not feeling well ranked first with a weighted mean of 3.21 and was verbally interpreted as moderate. The overall weighted mean of physical stressors was 3.02, verbally interpreted as "moderate".

2.2. Emotional In this category, item number 8 When I have a loved one who died ranked first with a weighted mean of 3.15 and verbally interpreted as moderate. The overall weighted mean of emotional stressors was 3.93, verbally interpreted as "moderate".

2.3. Social

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYPHILIPPINES-College of nursing

In this category, item number 6 When theres a negative issue about me ranked first with a weighted mean of 2.92 and verbally interpreted as moderate". The overall weighted mean of social stressors was 2.85, verbally interpreted as "moderate".

2.4. Mental In this category, item number 2 When there are so many requirements ranked first with a weighted mean of 3.08 and was verbally interpreted as moderate. The overall weighted mean of emotional stressors was 3.94, verbally interpreted as "moderate".

3. Description of Junior Nursing Students to the Effectiveness of their Coping Mechanisms Majority of junior nursing students indicated that their coping mechanisms were effective revealing an overall weighted mean of 2.98. And item number 26 I do what has to be done, one step at a time ranked first with a weighted mean of 3.2 and was verbally interpreted as effective.

4. The Relationship between the Socio-Demographic Profile of the Respondents and their Level of Stress The result of the test if there is a significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and their level of stress revealed that civil status and economic status are highly related to the level of stress of the nursing students based on the Pearson Product of Correlation in which the result for civil status is 0.134603 and 0.140739 for economic status.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYPHILIPPINES-College of nursing

5. The Relationship between the Socio-Demographic Profile of the Respondents and the Effectiveness of their Coping Mechanisms The result of the test if there's a significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and the effectiveness of coping mechanisms revealed that civil status has a very high significant relatioship to the effectiveness of coping mechanisms of the nursing students based on the Pearson Product of Correlation in which the result for civil status is 0.183448.

6. The Relationship between the Respondents Level of Stress and the Effectiveness of their Coping Mechanisms The result on the test if there's a significant relationship between the level of stress of the respondents and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms revealed that there is a very high significant relationship based on the Pearson Product of Correlation in which the result for civil status is 0.579056.

Conclusions Based on the results and findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: Most of the junior nursing students belong to the ages of 16 to 20 years old; females, single, with monthly family income of PhP20,000 to PhP30,000 and Roman Catholics. They indicated that physical, emotional, social, and mental stressors moderately affect their academic performance. They also described the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms to be effective. It also revealed in this study, civil status and economic status were highly related to the level of stress of the respondents. Civil status has a very high significant relationship with the

11

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYPHILIPPINES-College of nursing

effectiveness of their coping mechanisms. There is a very high significant relationship between the respondents' level of stress and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms, hence hypothesis is rejected.

Recommendations The following recommendations were made based on the findings of the study:

1. The institution should conduct seminars for students, on how to improve good study habits and how to deal with stress 2. The instructors should set counseling time with the students, to encourage them to feel good even if they are under stressed. 3. Nursing students should be enlightened about stress and coping mechanism so that to overcome everyday stress in life everyday life. 4. Nursing students should attend forums, symposiums, or lectures to enhance their knowledge about coping with stress.
