Overview
Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather
than actual) version of something, such as -
• An operating system
• A server
• A storage device
• A network resources,
• Applications etc.

Use of software to allow a piece of hardware to run

multiple operating system images at the same
time.

Hypervisor

• A hypervisor is a virtualization platform that allows one or

more guest operating systems to run on a host computer at
the same time.

• There are three types of virtualization forms

• Type 1 (Native or Bare Metal)
• Type 2
• Hybrid

Type 2

• Operating system installed directly onto

the physical hardware

• Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), role is to

create and manage virtual machines
• VMM here runs in User Mode
• VMM here are process virtual
machines
• Examples - Microsoft Virtual PC,
Microsoft Virtual Server 2005

Windows Server 2008 Hyper V

Hybrid

• Both the host OS and the VMM

essentially run directly on the
hardware

• Host OS and VMM both share CPU

cycles
• VMM here runs in Kernel Mode
• VMM here are system virtual
machines

Type 1

• A hypervisor is a layer of software that

exists just above the hardware

• It provide isolated execution

environments called partitions

• Each partition is provided with its own set

of hardware resources -such as memory,
CPU cycles

• There are two variations of Type 1 VMM:

Monolithic and Microkernelized

Windows Server 2008 Hyper V

Monolithic

• Hypervisor has its own drivers for

accessing the hardware beneath it.

• Drivers and third-party code runs in

very sensitive area

• Driver stability is a critical issue

Microkernelized

• One VM is the parent partition while

the others are child partitions

• The parent partition creates and

manages the child partitions, and it
contains a virtualization stack that is
used to control these child
partitions

• Examples - Windows Server 2008,

VMware ESX Server 3, Citrix
XenServer v4
