Filipino in English Classroom,
should it be banned?

F
ew years back, Filipino students are regarded as fluent
and proficient in the English language but nowadays it is
in the state of crisis. The English language fluency and
proficiency of the Filipino students particularly in the elemen-
tary and secondary schools deteriorate. It has been considered
that aside from the advent of some modern technologies and
gadgets that are being misused, another factor that contrib-
utes to this kind of deterioration as seen by some people is the
use of one’s native language in a second language classroom.
Putting this in the Philippine education context, Taga-
log which is the native tongue of the students is being used in
their English classrooms. With the occurrence of this dilemma,
could it be said that Filipino should be totally banned in the
four corners of the English classroom? If that is the case, then
it would only mean that the student is being silenced because
he is deprived to speak in his mother tongue. The silenced
student feels as though his thought or idea is not acceptable.
We should not totally restrict it but there must also
a room for its usage such as giving an explanation on the
relationship of Tagalog and English, explaining difficult
concepts, etc. wherein it can aid in facilitating compre-
hension and learning of the students. There should also be
parameters to be imposed on to what extent it should be Maribel Lynn Aguilar

fter a month long hardships in preparation for the biggest event of Saint
Augustine’s School Iba, Zambales, The Field Demonstration 2008
with the theme “Unified Talents Sharing Beyond Borders” was shown
to people of the Diocese of Iba. Different talents were exposed in the celebration of the
Feast of our patron, Saint Augustine.

Different expectators, parents, and guests witnessed the celebration with eagerness and smile
in their faces, as the students exerted their best efforts in achieving a meaningful and spectacu-
lar feast of St. Augustine.

Field Demonstration ’08 was held last August 23, 2008 at the SAS Gymna-
sium. This celebration in honor of our patron, Saint Augustine, was full of different color-
ful costumes and well created props dressed in by the students on the parade. This annual
activity of St. Augustine’s school celebrating its feast has different themes per year level, in
the grade school department they have enthusiastic interpretation of different dances of selected
provinces in the Philippines and on the high school department they were in full energy in the
theme of Ballroom Dances.

The festivity started with a parade around the Diocese of Iba, followed by the series of
dances. Starting on the Category A, participated by the Grade I pupils in their rendi-
tion of “Subli”, followed by the Grade Two pupils with their “Katsagayan Apakat”,
then the Grade Three pupils performing the “Pandango sa Ilaw”. Next is Category
B, particpated by the Grade Four pupils in “Singkilan Dance”, Grade Five
pupils with their rendition of “Salidumay Dance” and last but not the least the “Ka-
lipay” of the Grade six pupils. After the different Philippine dances performed by the grade
school, it was followed by the intensified Ballroom Dances of the high school students in
Category C. Freshmen came first to perform their “Cha-cha-cha” followed by the Sopho-
mores in their “Foxtrot-Reggae Dance”, then the junior students with their full energy
danced “Boogie”. Last but not the least the Seniors in their full bloom performance on
the rendition of “Tango”.

After the long moment of waiting to announce the winners in the different categories, the
“Pandango sa Ilaw” of the Grade Three students was declared champions in Category
A. In the category B the “Kalipay Dance” of the grade Six intensified the stage.
The comeback of the Fourth year students, dominating again the dance floor who were
announced as Champions in the category C.

This celebration was highlighted with the great voices of Mr. Vincent Paul A. Fer-
rer and Ms. Sheena Lee Atejera as the Masters of Ceremony.

Another great activity was finished that will last a lifetime in our memories specially to the
senior students on their last year in St. Augustine’s School who gave out their best and
deserves their privilege obtained.
