The benets of cooperative membership:

Does this sound familiar? You want or need some product or service, so you nd a business that provides it. The business wants or needs to make a prot, so they sell you what you need (or something close). Your interest is in spending as little as possible to get what you want, and their interest is in selling what they have for as much as they can get. Its how business is done, right? Well, that might be how things happen elsewhere, but its denitely not how they happen at Arizona Federal. Here, its never a matter of a you versus a them. Here, its just Us. You see, Arizona Federal is not a traditional business (like a bank), even though were sometimes thought of that way. We are a nancial cooperative, a group of people who have joined together to provide each other with access to affordable nancial services and information, for our mutual benet. Account holders, employees and directors are members of the cooperative; were all part of Us. But lately, it seems that we really havent put enough emphasis on our cooperative nature, the thing that makes us Us. And thats a problem, because it makes it easy to forget that our business decisions are always based on how they will benet both the cooperative and its individual members all of Us.

harnessing the power of

So, starting today, with this edition of our member newsletter, lets focus on what it really means to be members of a nancial cooperative. Lets talk about how the cooperative benets each of us, and about the responsibility each of us has to the cooperative to all of us. By doing so, well strengthen our cooperative and increase the value each of us receives from it. Then, well truly experience the Power of Us.

Lets focus on what it really means to be members of a nancial cooperative.

Beyond checking: paying, receiving and protecting, all in one account

By now, weve all probably heard more than we ever thought we would about checking accounts and debit cards and the fees associated with them. There was even a day set aside for people to transfer their accounts from banks to credit unions in protest of fees that were announced (and later cancelled). Chances are you know people who are unhappy with what theyre paying for their checking accounts. Those people ought to join us as members of Arizona Federal! Yes, theres a monthly fee associated with our account, but for $1.95 a month we get comprehensive identity protection, unlimited debit card use, unlimited online bill pay and online account access that now includes access from a mobile device. You cant get those features anywhere else in the Valley for anywhere near that price! (To see a comparison of local checking accounts, visit ArizonaFederal.org/Checking). Calling our account a checking account is like calling our nancial cooperative a bank it doesnt begin to do it justice. So, well try to think of something that ts better. In the meantime, if you arent using our way better than checking account for your day-today nancial needs, youre missing out on one of the most important benets of being one of Us. Call (602) 683-1000 to get started and invite your friends!

Paying on time helps all of

Those of us who have been members for the last several years have been painfully aware of the delinquency problems the credit union has seen, with many members struggling to make their loan payments on time (or at all). And while its true that lenders everywhere have seen similar situations, because were a nancial cooperative the effects have been felt by all of us: reduced dividends paid on savings, tightened lending practices, and even branch closings. Thats why its good news for all of us that more and more of our payments are being made on time. As a result, 2011 closed as our most successful year in a long time, and while we must remain vigilant, the future looks brighter every day. That doesnt mean, however, that its any less important that we all make our payments as scheduled. When you take out a loan from the credit union, youre borrowing from your fellow members; your co-workers, family and friends. Failure to pay as promised threatens the health of our cooperative, and means the rest of us have to pay more to cover our cost of operation. So, to all of us who are paying on time, your fellow members say Thank you! We cant wait to see what a healthy future has in store!

A Visa story
Every quarter well hear from one of Us about the personal benets of membership. This quarter Renee M. of Phoenix (shown here with son Parker) talks about her love of our Visa Platinum with ScoreCard Rewards. As soon as the Visa Platinum with ScoreCard Rewards became available, I knew I had to get one. At the time, I actually had a credit card I had gotten from another credit union, but they sold their program to a bank! I wanted to use a card that was tied in to the rest of my accounts so it would be easy to keep track of where I stood, and convenient to transfer payments. I dont use the card for everything (I use my Arizona Federal Visa Debit Card for day-to-day stuff), but if a purchase is over $150, or when Im lling the tank on the family wagon, out comes my Platinum card. I love earning rewards points! A while back my husband and I used points to y to Maine on vacation we even used points for the airport shuttles! Ive also gotten some great kitchen tools using points redemption was easy, and I was surprised at the high quality of the items. Ive also been surprised at how fast the points add up. I used the card to pay for my wedding, and the next thing I knew we had the points to take our trip. Who knew the happiest day of my life could also help pay for a vacation? I do like the low interest rate, and the fact that theres no annual fee. But if you ask me, its all about the points. Its rewarding to be one of Us.
