Background: Maikos learned from a very young age that no one can be trusted but yourself. Smaller, and weaker than most other boys, he was a prime target for the bullies of the little village where he grew up. He was also often brutally beaten by his father, the village smith, who was also a notorious drunkard. His mother had died giving birth to him, which only added to the resentment from his father and older brother. When Maikos was 12, he showed an uncanny ability for putting together pieces of metal into weird devices, but since he lacked the strength to work the forge, his father forbade him to work in the smithy. This all changed, when a peddler came to the village one day. Maikos showed an immediate interest, but not in the peddlers wares. What caught his attention was the strange weapon that the peddlers bodyguard carried in his belt. When he asked about the device, the guard answered this is called a pistol, son, or a firearm in more general terms. It works with the aid of black powder, like the big cannons and siege engines that some armies use in battle. You know what a siege engine is, right boy? Maikos shook his head, and the guard smiled kindly. well probably be staying here a few days, so I can show you how it works, maybe even teach you how to make black powder. Just dont spread it around to others, ya hear? Its a trade secret, you know. Over the next few days, the guard taught Maikos how to make black powder, and even let him shoot his gun once, far away from the village. When the peddler left, Maikos couldnt get the image of the gun out of his head. I must have one! the boy thought, and decided to make one himself. He had, in secret, been making drawings of the guards gun, so he could make one like it, but it took him a long time, since he had to work in secret from his family and everyone else. Finally, when he was 16 he had made a functional pistol, and started training with it out in the woods. Whenever the villagers accidentally heard the roars of the gun, they thought it was some great beast on the loose, and stayed away from Maikos training ground. This only made it easier for him to train. One day though, something happened that would change Maikos life forever. His older brother, and his gang of hoodlums and bullies, saw Maikos sneak into the forest, and followed him to his hiding place. Just as maikos was about to start training, his brother stepped out and spoke. so, yere hiding things from me and pa, huh? Well, we cant have that, can we boys? the gang laughed evilly at Maikos. Ye better give me that thing there before I beat the crap outta ye, Maikos Maikos looked at his brother desperately, and when the bigger boy reached out for the pistol, Maikos pulled the trigger. The shot tore of a big chunk of his brother face, and he fell to the ground, dead. The other boys just stood there, dumbstruck, watching the blood flow from their leaders head. Maikos looked at them madly and yelled anyone wanna get the next shot? the bullies whimpered weakly. I didnt think so, now you can go back to the village and live out your meaningless little lives, but im leaving this dump. With this weapon Ive created, I can get whatever I want, when I want it. Anyone wanna come, feel free, but then you answer to me 3 of the boys followed Maikos out into the world, where they, with the help of Maikos homemade firearms, became a feared band of brigands known as the Redwood Raiders, and with Maikos at the front, they pillaged and dominated many a traderoute for a few years. It was in Maikos 21st year that things started going wrong. A series of unsuccessful raids had left him with only one henchman, and he was badly wounded. Maikos swiftly decided to kill him, as a wounded brigand only would hamper his work. Then, while walking along the road, trying to decide what to do next, he came upon a rag-tag group of travellers, who were apparently trying to gain a foothold in the land for their new goddess, Shar. Eventually, Maikos joined the group, thinking what the heck, one groups as good as the other and maybe this religious crap will pay of. It seems to work well for the big churches.
