FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! This weekends readingsboth from the Book of Samuel in the Old Testament (1 Sam 3:3b-19) and from the Gospel of John in the New Testament (John 1: 35-72) deal with the subject of vocationliterally, a call from God to pursue a particular life path or commitment. Our Christian tradition tells us that, in and through our baptism in Jesus Christ, we share His vocation as priest, prophet, and king. The way that we live out that call and role will be specific and different according to our individual life circumstances. We can also think of a vocation in terms of the state of life as in the case of a single or married person. The story of the boy Samuel reminds us of Gods gentle persistence in pursuing us with His invitation to commit ourselves to Him and to serve others. If God wants you to do something, God will have you, one spiritual director once told me. Another put it more gently: Imagine that God is speaking to your soul, saying, Listen, there is something I want you to do for Mesomething only you and no one else can do. Would you help me? In the case of Samuel, God called the boy to do something special indeedto become a prophet. Eli, his mentor, helped him to discern that call, received in something like a dreamlike state. In the Gospel reading, John the Baptizerin an exceptional display of humilityurges his own disciples to follow Jesus instead of himself. And they do! He does not confuse his specific vocation with that of anyone else. John demonstrates that he understands both the possibilities and limitations of his own call as the herald of the Messiah. In both readings from Scripture, the chief characters are lucky. Their call from God is revealed and/or explained to them in fairly explicit terms that they can understand. They get it and then move on. All they have to do is to make the decision to surrender their will to God and to embrace their particular call. For us, its not always so simple. We face a dizzying array of possibilities for a lifes vocation, accompanied by educational and employment opportunities and mobility both social and geographicalthat our ancestors would never have dreamed of. They were often truly stuck in their situations; we dont have to be. Our dilemma and challenge, then, is not always about choosing between one path and another, but rather about deciding from among a vast range of possibilities with which to commit ourselves. Add to that the unsettling reality of a shaky job market and the disappearance of lifelong careers. In todays world, one must be flexible and be prepared to change not only jobs, but also careers according to market demands.

How, then, can we make confident choices and serious commitmentsto both people and to meaningful work-- in an atmosphere of so much constant change and uncertainty? Vocational discernment requires patience, persistence, self-confidence, and above all, trust in Godno matter how unreliable the surrounding environment. We need-- in the silence of our hearts and with the help of those who know, love, and care for us to discern what it is God is calling us to do with our time, talent, and treasure. And we need to do the footwork of mentally trying on different roles and acquiring the appropriate skills for our life work. Our individual jobs and career paths may shift and be transformed over time. What does not shift or change is the sense of inner peace and security that one realizes in listening for and responding to Gods call. Yes, the times can be shaky and uncertainwelcome to Life!but, God will always be with us. And Gods ultimate concern is for our fulfillment and well-being. As one of my friends constantly reminds me: God didnt bring you this far along in your life just to drop you on your head! God bless,

LIBRARY CATEGORY: THEOLOGY OF MARY

The Theology of the Blessed Mother has been the subject of great controversy since Gabriel arrived in Nazareth. Books & Church Documents have been written, argued, confirmed and denied. If this specialized branch of theology puzzles you, take a look. Dr. Mark Miravalles book Introduction to Mary. The Heart of Marian Doctrine and Devotion presents fundamental elements of authentic Catholic doctrine regarding Mary & responds to ten common objections about Marian doctrine and devotions. It is written for the long-standing Catholic and the inquiring nonCatholic. Dr. Paul Haffners book The Mystery of Mary is clear structured theology & doctrine set in its historical perspective. He examines each of the fundamental doctrines about Mary & presents Marys gifts & privileges realistically without confusing doctrine and devotionalism. In The Wonder of Guadalupe, Francis Johnston gives a brief history of the appearance of Mary to Juan Diego in Guadalupe in 1531. Johnston explains this venerable image & how it appeals to world-wide contemporary society.

Celebrating Catholic Schools

The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service. The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs for a week. This years Catholic School Week theme focuses on three priorities that Catholic schools, including our Parish school, Old Mission Montessori School, establish that make them stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of ones time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. Our Parish will celebrate Catholic Schools at the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, February 5th. Children from our Parish school, Old Mission Montessori School, will participate in the choir and as altar servers. The school will also celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a special school Mass in the chapel on February 3rd and during various in-school activities throughout the week. Please join us at the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday the 5th of February in celebration of Catholic School Week. Call 760-757 -3232 with any questions.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
Y as lo hacen!

Padre Chuck
