Using the current issues and advocacy campaigns, in order to fulfill the objective of
social relevance, employ a learning process to strengthen and develop a correct
appreciation of social conclusions and problems. This is not only to keep abreast
with the times, but to give flesh and deepen the group of our social problems.

Examples:
Correlating skills and knowledge with social purpose and social
services.

In transformative model of learning, teacher education courses need to model and
encourage effective practice in dynamic pedagogical processes. How do you make
activities/situations on the following principles?
Principles

Activities

1. Assign students active role in the

learning situation rather than
passive.

2. Engage students with ideas,

applications of intellectual
processes, or current problems,
either personal or social.

3. Involve learners with reality (real

like objects, artifacts, materials
and the like.

4. Examine in a new setting an idea,

an application of intellectual
process, or a current problem
which has been previously
studied.

5. Examine topics or issues that

citizens in our society do not
normally examine and that are
typically ignored by the major
communication media in the
nation.

The above principles aid in realizing the principles of teaching exemplified by

Deweys REFLECTIVE THEORY of TEACHING. Reflective thought is that active,
careful and persistent examination of beliefs or purported form of knowledge, in the
light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusions toward which it ends.

As exalted on those principles, the teacher is not treated as an expert but as a

facilitator of learning. It follows that he must cast himself in the role of the learner.
Pedagogically, he may in fact be a preferable role model to that of the expert. He
implies teaching by discovery or inquiry methods rather than by instructions. What
is required of him to make him an advance learner capable of offering something of
worth to the slow learners with whom he works? Skills are significant in finding
things out. But more than that: some hold on, and a continual refinement of a
philosophical understanding of the subjects he is teaching and learning, of its deep
structures and their rationale. The teacher needs to take on this agenda a desire to
understand the nature of social science, the value problems that it raises and its
relation to the questions at the center of the course.
Only when the teacher has given ways towards structuring his own understanding
of these issues can he adopt the pedagogy of the course.

In the keynote address at the UNESCO National Conference in 1995, Foreign

Secretary Alberto Romulo quoted the United Nations resolution declaring 20012015 as the decade of Education for Sustainable Development where, the vision of
education for the society is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit
from quality education and learns the values, behaviors and lifestyle required for a
suitable future and for a positive social transformation.
He further pointed out that one of the policy recommendations on education,
formulated at the July 2003 Conference on Globalization with a Human Face in
Japan was that curriculum development must be the product of a consultative
process that involves all stakeholders including civil society, local communities,
parents and students,
It is therefore good to say that we should really look into the curriculum if we want
our education system be world-class. It does not only look into major revisions of
content but also the pedagogies and assessment, as well as bridging theory into
practice, through the field study courses.

While setting up with a group discussion with your classmates who are all involved
in designing a curriculum model, pay careful attention to various interaction
patterns going on.
Make a series of mental notes (and written notes if appropriate) observing such
things as:
1. Who speaks and what are his/her ideas?

2. What are the verbal as well as non verbal clues that the various members of
the group used to register their agreement and disagreement?

3. What roles do other members assume in addition to their assigned roles?

(e.g. who is being the mediator? Who is bringing comic relief and so on?)

4. What are the various prospective you notice? (e.g. Who is willing to compare?
Who has already made up his mind? Who is confused and needs more
information?)

5. After the group discussion, list three ways the group will be able to come up
with a good model or design on curriculum development.
