Course Description: Weather as it relates to aviation, its hazards, and weather services available to pilots. Course Learning Outcomes: As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to
Recognize weather patterns and the causal factors in their formation. Identify the variety of weather sources available for use by pilots in flight planning and in flight. Identify the sources of various weather reports used for disseminating current and forecast weather conditions. Recognize the causes of various weather phenomena and their potential impact on flight operations. Recognize the basics of atmospheric composition and air movement. Identify the causal factors and prerequisites of thunderstorm formation and the life cycle and characteristics of thunderstorm development. Understand the characteristics of hazardous weather phenomena generally and the specific of wind shear associated with thunderstorms and microburst activity. Identify the characteristics of high altitude weather with emphasis on the uniqueness of jet stream activity. Attain familiarity with aviation weather terminology and abbreviations. Become familiar with how various weather phenomena can have adverse effects on aircraft performance.

Please note that changes may be made to the syllabus at any time during the term by announcement of the professor. It is the responsibility of the student to make any adjustments necessary to complete the assignments as per the revised schedule. Late Assignment Policy: Late assignments will not receive full credit. The loss of credit will be predicated on the length of time the assignment is overdue.

Grading Scale and Policy: A 90 100 B 80 89 C 70 79 D 60 69 F Below 60 Evaluation Method Mid Term Exam 30% Final Exam 30% Homework 10% Term Paper/Project/Presentation 20% Class Participation and Attendance 10% Tests, Quizzes, and Final Examination: Grades are based on the average of your test scores, term paper or project including a presentation and homework assignments. There will not be a comprehensive final exam. The last exam will just be the last exam. All tests are announced at least one week in advance. The final exam is given on the last day of the class each semester. Test cannot be made up after it has been given to the class. If a student will be absent the day of the test, it is the students responsibility to make arrangements to take the test prior to the day it is given to the class. In the case of a substantiated emergency, a make-up test can be taken at a later date, to be determined by the instructor. A student who fails to make arrangements within five days after returning to class loses make-up privileges. In the event that the student disagrees with the determination of the instructor, the academic grievance procedures will be followed. Make-up Exam Policy: No make-up exams will be given following any announced quiz or test unless approved by the instructor prior to the test date. If you are absent from a class it is your responsibility to contact the instructor to determine if there will be a quiz or test the following week. Failure to contact the instructor does not excuse you from an announced test due to lack of preparation on your part. If you are absent for an announced test, you will receive a grade of zero unless other arrangements have been approved by the instructor prior to the date of the test. Class Policies and Methodology Attendance: Professors are required to take attendance. It is extremely important that students attend every class. Students are expected to attend all class meetings and course activities. Any class meeting missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity of learning and may adversely affect a students achievement in the course. Therefore, a percentage of the course grade will be based on attendance, preparation for class discussion and class discussions. If an absence is anticipated, the student should notify the instructor, preferably in advance. Students are encouraged to assist each other with access to class notes for missed classes. Students are expected to attend all courses and course activities for which they are registered. Any class meeting missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity of learning and may adversely affect a students achievement in the course. Students must attend at least 90% of the classes to receive credit for a course unless prior approval from the instructor is obtained for exceptions to this policy. Excessive absence will result in a grade of FX unless the student officially withdraws from the course by completing the required forms at the Registrars office prior to the last date for withdrawal from the course. These dates are listed in the college catalog for each semester. Please contact the instructor if you expect to be absent from class or if you have any unusual or extenuating circumstances regarding an absence. If you are late by 10 minutes or more, you will be counted as tardy. Three instances of tardiness are equivalent to one absence. Leaving class early is equivalent to being tardy. Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. If you are late, it is your responsibility to make sure the instructor is informed of your arrival for class and marks you as late and not absent.

Electronic Device Use: The use of electronic devices can be disruptive to the educational process and interfere with the ability of students to learn the lecture materials. In order to maintain a secure and orderly learning environment, and to promote respect and courtesy regarding the use of electronic devices, all electronic devices must be turned OFF while in the classroom. Exceptions to this policy may only be made by pre-approval from the instructor or when authorized through Disability Support Services. Electronic device(s), include any privately owned devices that are used for audio, video, or text communication or any other type of computer or computer-like instrument which includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, pagers, Mp3 players, iPods, personal digital assistants (PDAs), compact disc players, portable game consoles, cameras, digital scanners, lap top computers and other electronic or battery powered instruments which transmit voice, text, or data from one person or entity to another person or entity. Email Policy: All email sent to me must be received though the Palm Beach State email system. My Palm Beach State email address is fordd@palmbeachstate.edu . This email must be sent from your Palm Beach State student email account address. Any email that is not from a students Palm Beach State e-mail domain address (my.palmbeachstate.edu) will be considered spam and not deliverable to the instructor. My Palm Beach State email account will be checked on a weekly basis. Any urgent information should be communicated to me via telephone at the contact information listed above. All students of Palm Beach State have been assigned a free Palm Beach State email address. The Palm Beach State student e-mail domain address will be my.palmbeachstate.edu. All emails sent by me will be directed to your Palm Beach State email address. The Palm Beach State email address is designated as an official means of communication between the college, faculty and students. The college will send important information, notices and student updates to your email account. Additionally, this account may be used to communicate to you regarding class and course information. You are responsible for checking this account on a regular basis in between class meeting times to ensure that you have received any important notices on a timely basis. A notebook and pen for taking lecture notes is recommended. You may purchase your textbook(s) at any one of Palm Beach Community Colleges campus bookstores. There are numerous books and audiovisual materials available in both the library and the audiovisual center relating to all areas of the curriculum covered in the instrument rating course. You are expected to contact the instructor via phone, email, or in class if you need any additional help with the course material. Methods of Instruction: The methods of instruction for this class are: lecture; and class discussions. Media sources are also used in the classroom. Classroom Etiquette and Student Behavior Guidelines

Students will demonstrate respect for professors and fellow students. Behavior that is disruptive to a positive learning environment reported by the professor will result in a warning on the first instance; the second instance might result in expulsion from the course or campus.
Computer Competency Component

Each student will, to the satisfaction of the professor, demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic computer operations through various professor-determined exercises and/or assignments.

Eating, Drinking and Smoking

Eating and drinking are confined to areas designated on the campus. Smoking is not permitted in any College building and only in areas designated at each campus.
Student Responsibility Policy

When a student attends the College, s/he becomes subject to its jurisdiction. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, in all areas of campus life. By enrolling, they pledge to obey the rules and regulations of the College and are responsible for observing all College policies and procedures as published in the student handbook, the College catalog and other College publications. The student will be responsible for preparing for class, participating in class, and completing assignments on time.

Withdrawal Policy for Individual Courses

The last day to withdraw from a College course with a "W" grade in this course is (Click here and type the withdrawal date for your course from the online class roster).. It is the responsibility of the student to use the PantherWeb system or visit a campus Registrars office to withdraw. An official withdrawal entitles the student to a grade of "W" in the class.
