President- In a historic evening, U.S. Senator Barack
Obama (D-IL) accepted the nomination of the
Democratic party for President of the United States. He
became the first African-American to achieve this political
milestone and the third Illinoisan to do so. He accepted
the nomination on August 28, 2008, which was also the
45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a
Dream" speech.

Barack Obama Names Joe Biden as his Running Mate- On

August 22, 2008, U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)
announced in Springfield, IL that U.S. Senator Joe Biden (D-
DE) would be his running mate. The announcement was
made at the Old State Capitol Building, the same place
where Obama announced his run in February 2007.

Who Is Killing Black Women in
Florence and Why?

Florence- Missing women,
high profile cases of unex-
plainable murders and
decomposed bodies all
sound like things you
would see on shows like
The Wire and CSI.
However, in the last three
months (since August
2008) that has been the
scenario in Florence, but
unlike the television shows
it has been African-
American women in the
community who have fallen
victim.
According to the
City of Florence Chief of
Police Anson Shells, there
were five homicides in
2007. Now late October
2008, there have already
been five homicides, three
of them Black women, with
“more expected,” one
woman’s disappearance,
Jannie Mae Dixon, is still
being investigated.
As the entire com-
munity has already heard
from news reports, this
past Monday police discov-
ered the human remains of
two women. According to
SCNow.com, autopsy
reports Wednesday con-
firmed the remains to be
African-American women.
The police report states,
during the search [of the
area] the officer detected
an odor and observed a
large square shaped hole
that had been dug. Inside
the hole there appeared to
be an object wrapped in a
plastic bag that was under
some vehicle tires and
other debris. In an inter-
view with Chief Shells, he
tells us, “We [the Police
Department] have asked
SLED to come in and help
to do the investigation.”
Chief Shells explains,
“Both bodies were buried;
one was…put in a ditch and
covered in dirt with only a
portion of the body
exposed, and the other was
basically wrapped in a
blanket or sheet and then
tossed in the ditch and
then covered with
debris…both [bodies] were
in the 500 block of Gaillard
Street.”
Chief Shells, who
came to the Florence
Police Department in 2001
states, “There have been a
total of 36 homicides since
2001, and of those all but 2

alone, has been ‘Black on
Black’ crime, with the
exception of the murder of
the elderly white woman
on Maple Park committed
by a black youth. I n
the last three months all of
the high profile homicides
have been black women.
Early August 2008,
Jannie Mae Dixon, 35, of
Aiken Drive was reported
missing by her sister, Joyce
Dixon, to Florence Police.
According to the police
report, the family has not
seen Jannie for three
weeks. Joyce Dixon
advised police her sister
Chief Shells
does have a drug problem
and she has checked her
local hang out areas in
North Florence. Joyce
Dixon stated to police that
it was unlike her sister to
be missing for so long and
has never been away from
home for more than a day
or two. No body has been
found in connection to this
investigation. Chief Shells
tells us, although they have
received information that
Jannie Dixon may be in
other areas, the case is still
under investigation at this
time.
Late August 2008,
Willie Mae Hayes, 69, of
Liberty Street was report-
ed missing by her daugh-
ter, Wilma Epps, to
Florence Police.
According to the police
report, Epps reported her
mother did not report to
work the morning of
August 25th and her car
and television were miss-
ing from the residence. It
was later discovered that
the victim’s purse and dri-
ver’s license were still at
the residence. Epps’ broth-
er (David Hayes) stated he
arrived to the scene and
noticed a window screen
off an east side kitchen
window and a green blind
rod on the ground under-
neath the same window.
CPL T. Ford later found
the missing vehicle aban-
doned on Roughfork
Street. Within days the
body of Willie Mae Hayes
was found on Gaillard
Street. Four suspects, two
of whom age 14, have been
charged with her death.
September 2008,
Rachel Samuel, 51, of
Campbell Street was
reported missing by her
sister, Liz Samuel, to
Florence Police.
According to the police
report, Rachel Samuel had
not been seen or heard
from in a month. Rachel
Samuel’s last known
whereabouts was a dental
appointment in Florence.
October 2008,
Joretha Lynn Kirk, 52, of
Gaillard Street was report-
ed missing by her sister,
Willette Burrell, to
Florence Police.
According to the police
report, Kirk and her
boyfriend moved into the
location the afternoon of
October 9th, and later that
evening Kirk left and did
not return. Kirk’s
boyfriend, Robert Durhn,
stated she left the resi-
dence with an unidentified
black female walking in an
unknown direction. She
was last seen wearing a
peach colored pair of
pants, a peach tone shirt,
and a pair of black shoes.
Durhn stated that they did
not unpack anything, and
Kirk did not take anything
with her. It was also noted
that Kirk used drugs.

reports the three women –
Samuel, Kirk, and Dixon –
were all connected. Samuel
and Kirk were allegedly
friends, while Dixon was
Kirk’s cousin.
With the high
number of homicides in the
later part of the year mem-
bers of the community
want to know why this is
all happening, and is “big
city crime” coming to
Florence? When asked if he
believed the murders were
gang related in any way
Chief Shells replied, “We
cannot commit to the idea
that all the murders are
gang related.” Chief Shells
tells us the crime rate in
Florence is no different
than the crime rate in
Columbia. In response to
the outbreak of crime
against women in the com-
munity Chief Shells advis-
es all citizens to, “Be aware
of your surroundings, and
be careful when you go
out.” Chief Shells does not
advise or oppose communi-
ty members legally owning
weapons, but he does add,
“Make sure you have the
proper registration, learn
how to use it, and get all
the necessary training.”
At press time no
suspects have been ques-
tioned or arrested in the
investigation of the two
bodies found on Gaillard
Street or in the cases of the
three missing women.

Americans Savor a Historic Moment

When Barack Obama went
over the top in electoral
votes, Carol West
screamed with joy.
West, who recently moved
to Lake Wylie, S.C., called
her daughter in
Washington, D.C., who
had a baby five months
ago, and told her, “Our
babies can become presi-
dent!”
For West, Obama’s victory
was especially important
for young, black Americans
to give them a sense of
hope.
"It's a black man in a
White House," said
William Patterson of
Clinton, Md., who
watched the election at
home. Asked if he thought
he'd ever live to see a black
man become president, the
61-year-old Patterson said,
"No. It's something else."
In the east, there was par-
tying in the street from
Times Square in New York
to State College, Pa., the
home of Penn State
University, to the histori-
cally black U Street corri-
dor in northwest
Washington, D.C.
Hundreds of residents
spilled into the streets near
the White House, carrying
balloons, banging on
drums and chanting "Bush
is gone!" Along U Street,
once known as America's
Black Broadway for its
thriving black-owned
shops and theaters, men
stood on car roofs, waving
American flags and Obama
posters.
Nearby, at historically
black Howard University,
hundreds of students
erupted in cheers, broke
into song and chanted,
"Yes, we did!"
"That was fast. I was
thinking it would be

Gibbs, an Army captain
based at Fort Gordon, Ga.,
who served two tours of
duty in Iraq. "Now I can
look my son in the eye and
honestly tell him that he
can be the President of the

Obama Wins; Becomes First Black Obama Built His Win on
President In U.S. History

WASHINGTON (AP) --
Barack Obama swept to victo-
ry as the nation's first black
president Tuesday night in an
electoral college landslide that
overcame racial barriers as old
as America itself.
The son of a black father from
Kenya and a white mother
from Kansas, the Democratic
senator from Illinois sealed his
historic triumph by defeating
Republican Sen. John
McCain in a string of wins in
hard-fought battleground
states - Ohio, Florida, Virginia
and Iowa.
A huge crowd in Grant Park
in Obama's home town of
Chicago erupted in jubilation
at the news of his victory.
Some wept.
McCain called his former rival
to concede defeat - and the end
of his own 10-year quest for the
White House. "The American
people have spoken, and spo-
ken clearly," McCain told dis-
appointed supporters in
Arizona.
Obama and his running mate,
Sen. Joseph Biden of
Delaware, will take their oaths
of office as president and vice
president on Jan. 20, 2009.
As the 44th president, Obama
will move into the Oval Office
as leader of a country that is
almost certainly in recession,
and fighting two long wars,
one in Iraq, the other in
Afghanistan.
The popular vote was close,
but not the count in the
Electoral College, where it
mattered most.
There, Obama's audacious
decision to contest McCain in
states that hadn't gone
Democratic in years paid rich
dividends.
Obama has said his first order
of presidential business will be
to tackle the economy. He has
also pledged to withdraw
most U.S. combat troops from
Iraq within 16 months.
Fellow Democrats rode his
coattails to larger majorities in
both houses of Congress.
They defeated incumbent
Republicans and won open
seats by turn.
The 47-year-old Illinois sena-
tor was little known just four
years ago. A widely praised
speech at the Democratic
National Convention, deliv-
ered when he was merely a
candidate for the Senate,
changed that.
Overnight he became a
sought-after surrogate cam-
paigner, and he had scarcely
settled into his Senate seat
when he began preparing for
his run for the White House.
A survey of voters leaving
polling places on Tuesday
showed the economy was by
far the top Election Day issue.
Six in 10 voters said so, and
none of the other top issues -
energy, Iraq, terrorism and
health care - was picked by
more than one in 10.
"May God bless whoever wins
tonight," President Bush told

House, where his tenure runs
out on Jan. 20.
The Democratic leaders of
Congress celebrated in
Washington.
"It is not a mandate for a party
or ideology but a mandate for
change," said Senate Majority
leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

California: "Tonight the
American people have called
for a new direction. They have
called for change in America."
Shortly after 11 p.m. in the
East, The Associated Press
count showed Obama with
338 electoral votes, well over
the 270 needed for victory.
McCain had 127 after winning
states that comprised the nor-
mal Republican base.
The nationwide popular vote
was remarkably close. Totals
from 58 percent of the nation's
precincts showed Obama with
51 percent and McCain with
47.9.
Interviews with voters sug-
gested that almost six in 10
women were backing Obama

nationwide, while men leaned
his way by a narrow margin.
Just over half of whites sup-
ported McCain, giving him a
slim advantage in a group that
Bush carried overwhelmingly
in 2004.
The results of the AP survey
were based on a preliminary
partial sample of nearly 10,000
voters in Election Day polls
and in telephone interviews
over the past week for early
voters.
Democrats also acclaimed
Senate successes by former
Gov. Mark Warner in
Virginia, Rep. Tom Udall in
New Mexico and Rep. Mark
Udall in Colorado. All won
seats left open by Republican
retirements.
In New Hampshire, former
Gov. Jeanne Shaheen defeated
Republican Sen. John Sununu
in a rematch of their 2002 race,
and Sen. Elizabeth Dole fell to
Democrat Kay Hagan in
North Carolina.
Democrats also looked for
gains in the House. They
defeated Republican incum-
bents Rep. Tom Feeney and
Ric Keller in Florida, 22-year

elected to be the next presi-

constituency to usher in this
progressive leader for change
was the hip-hop vote, 18-35
year olds who are brand loyal
to hip-hop culture.
In consistent and telling num-
bers, exit polls in Ohio,
Pennsylvania, New York,
Michigan, Minnesota, New
Jersey, Wisconsin and
Connecticut conducted by
major television networks
reported that 18-29 year olds
voted in record numbers mak-
ing their voices heard for
Barack Obama.
"Tonight, the hip-hop genera-
tion made history," empha-
sized Reverend Lennox
Yearwood, Jr, President of the
Hip Hop Caucus. "In the
60's, young people had to be
revolutionary, but in the 21st
century we have decided to be
'solution-ary.' We have come
out in large numbers to not
only change America, but to
change the world. We have
made America respect our
vote!"
"What we are witnessing
today is the game changing
impact of the hip-hop vote,"
asserted Valeisha Butterfield,
Executive Director of the Hip-
Hop Summit Action Network
(HSAN). "Our grassroots
efforts to get out the vote paid
off tremendously.
Young adults from every part
of the United States shattered
Connecticut and Rep. Robin
Hayes in North Carolina.
At least two Democrats lost
their seats. Rep. Kevin
Mahoney fell after admitting
to two extramarital affairs
while serving his first term in
Florida. In Louisiana,
Democratic Rep. Don
Cazayoux lost the seat he had
won in a special election six
months ago.
The resurgent Democrats also
elected a governor in one of
the nation's traditional bell-
wether states when Missouri
Attorney General Jay Nixon
won his race.
The White House was the
main prize of the night on
which 35 Senate seats and all
435 House seats were at stake.
A dozen states elected gover-
nors, and ballots across the
country were dotted with
issues ranging from taxes to
gay rights.
An estimated 187 million vot-
ers were registered, and in an
indication of interest in the
battle for the White House, 40
million or so had already voted
as Election Day dawned.

The bus tour hit battleground
states throughout the country
and culminated in Toledo,
OH. and Detroit, MI today,
Election Day. Multi-platinum
hip-hop star and actor, T. I.,
was the official spokesperson
of the tour and took the
RESPECT MY VOTE! bus
to vote early in Atlanta,
GA.last week.

WASHINGTON - Barack
Obama soaked up most of
the votes from the nation's
blacks, Hispanics and
women and siphoned off
enough white support to
leave John McCain with no
way to win.
Exit polls showed that
McCain won the votes of
55 percent of white voters,
whose strong support has
been vital to the success of
winning Republican presi-
dential candidates. But he
didn't get a wide enough
margin to compensate for
the lopsided support that
Obama drew from other
voters who make up a quar-
ter of the electorate.

Forty percent of those vot-
ing called themselves
Democrats - a historically
high number - and they
overwhelmingly chose
Obama. He also held a sig-
nificant edge among the
quarter of voters who
called themselves inde-
pendents.
McCain, 72, was the choice
of just over half of senior
citizens, coveted for their
vigilance in going to the
polls. Those 65 years and
older were 16 percent of all
voters, similar in influence
to people under 30.
McCain drew some of his
strongest support from
white, working-class vot-
ers, winning 58 percent of
their vote. But it was shy of
the 23-point margin by
which Bush won the votes
of whites without a college
degree in 2004.
Enthusiasm clearly was on
Obama's side: Almost six
in 10 of his voters said they
were excited about what
Obama would do as presi-
dent. Fewer than three in
10 McCain voters felt that
way about their man,
according to the exit polls.
Curt Babura, a 31-year-old
cook from Cleveland, said
he never bothered to vote
before casting his ballot for
Obama. "When he talks it
feels like he's talking to
you," Babura said.
Fear played no favorites.
Among both Obama and
McCain voters, about half
said they were scared of
what the candidate they
opposed would do as presi-
dent.
"I'm scared to death of the
Democratic Party this
year, particularly Barack
Obama," said Robert
Zannini, a 73-year-old
retired Air Force pilot
from Montgomery, Ala.
"Everything he says seems
to lead to socialism."
Obama drew the votes of
two-thirds of Hispanic vot-
ers - heavily courted by
both candidates - and 95
percent of blacks who went
to the polls.
He seemed to inspire opti-
mism about race in
America. About 60 percent
of Obama's voters believe
race relations will improve
over the next few years,
and only 7 percent predict
they will deteriorate. In
contrast, almost two-thirds
of McCain's voters expect-
ed racial tensions to stay
the same or worsen.
In both camps, one voter
out of five acknowledged
that the candidates' race
was a factor in their vote,
but almost no one said it
was the most important
factor.
A healthy lead among
women voters typically is
key to a Democratic presi-
dential victory, and Obama
attracted 56 percent of
their votes. He split the
overall male vote with
McCain.
Obama cleaned up with his
effort to mobilize potential
supporters who had never
voted before. Among first-
time voters, one in five was
black, almost twice the
proportion of blacks
among voters overall.
Another one in five was
Hispanic. Two-thirds of
new voters were under 30.
Almost half were
Democrats, and a third
called themselves inde-
pendents.

typically votes Republican,
said she didn't stick with
her usual party this elec-
tion.

Barack Obama
Elected America's
First Black
President

WASHINGTON(NNPA) – After a fierce fight of two years to
change the course of history, U. S. Senator Barack Obama has
been elected the first African-American president of the United
States.
His win culminates an American history that expands from Black
slavery to Jim Crow to a modern day civil rights movement still
marked by institutional racism.
“America is in the process and has taken the first step of turning
from darkness unto light, turning from war unto piece, turning
from exploitation of the poor by the powerful to equal opportuni-
ty and economic justice,” said civil rights icon the Rev. Joseph
Lowery in an interview. “It’s a great moment for America.”
In awe, America has paused to celebrate this victory.
“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a
place where all things are possible, if you’re still wondering if the
dream of our founders is alive in our time, if you still question the
power of our Democracy, tonight is your answer,” Obama began
his victory speech before a screaming Chicago crowd of more than
250,000. “It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around
schools and churches and other places like I’ve never seen, people
who waited three hours, four hours, many for the first time in their
lives because they believed that this time…That their voices could
be that difference.”
He recalled his campaign strategy, which involved connecting
people from all walks of life from both traditionally Democratic
and Republican states.
''It was spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and
Republican, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Native-American,
gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans who sent a
message to the world that we have never been just a collection of
individuals or a collection of red states and blue states, we are and
always will be the Unites States of America,” he said as Blacks and
Whites celebrated the win together.
In an exclusive election eve message to Black leaders, Obama
credited Black voters for his pending win, saying, ''You have done
this.''
The Black Press is partially responsible for that victory.
''The Black vote has taken the high road,'' said Ray Boone, edi-
tor/publisher of the Richmond Free Press in Richmond, Va., the
former Capital of the Confederacy, which elected a Democratic
president for the first time in more than 40 years.
''This marks a difinitive departure from our shameful past. This
only gives hope and pride to the fact that Virginia contributed to
the advancement of the country and gives hope to the entire
world,'' Boone said.
Obama graciously congratulated Republican Sen. John McCain
for his hard fight in a tone that caused the audience to cheer.
In contrast, McCain had to shush an audience who booed when
he congratulated Obama in his concession speech. Still McCain
graciously congratulated Obama and even paid homage to the
Black community for its victory.
“He managed to do so much by inspiring the hopes of some mil-
lions of Americans who once wrongly believed they had little at
stake or little influence in the election of an American president,''
McCain said. ''It is something I deeply admire and commend him
for achieving. This is an historic election. I recognize the special
significance it has for African-americans and for the special pride
that must be theirs tonight.''
Civil rights leaders reveled in the victory. Tears streamed the face
of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights icon, watching Obama
speak in Chicago.
''This victory is the fruit of the struggle of many people who've
gone by,'' said National Urban League President and CEO Marc
Morial. ''People can now quit asking when will the day come
when a Black man can be elected president of the United States.''
The Obama win comes after a hard-fought race over the past two
years as he struggled to prove himself; even in the Black commu-
nity, which initially did not believe he could win due to White
racism.
The son of a Kenyan man and a White woman from Kansas,
Obama initially received a slow reception from Black voters.
In January and February of 2007, an ABC News-Washington
Post poll showed his Democratic Primary opponent Hillary
Clinton at 40 points higher than Obama among African-
Americans who had been asked their preference for the
Democratic Primary.
An earlier poll in December of 2006 showed that 65 percent of
Whites to only 54 percent of Blacks thought America would be
willing to elect a Black president.
“A lot of Black people, especially in the South, really didn’t think
that a Black candidate could be elected president. And they
weren’t looking for a symbolic candidate. They were looking for
somebody who was going to win,” says David Bositis, a specialist
on Black electoral politics at the Joint Center for Political and
Economic Studies. Adding to the Black support for Clinton was
the popularity of her husband, former President Clinton.
But then there was a shift.
“Once he won Iowa, there was some significant movement,”
Bositis points out. The Jan. 3 Iowa primary caused the world to
gasp that a Black man in America could win a presidential primary
in a state that was more than 95 percent White.
Immediately, the pace of Obama’s support among Blacks escalat-
ed. An ABC News poll showed him at 60-40 percent Black sup-
port over Clinton by mid January. Winning broad-based support,
he consistently maintained more pledged delegates than Clinton,
a key factor in winning the nomination.

Now that Barack Obama has defeated John McCain, Joe
the Plumber and a barrage of negative television commer-
cials, he will now strive to balance the high expectations of
African Americans and other progressives with the reality
of an anemic economy and supersized budget deficits.
Like McCain, the president-elect promised that shrinking
finances will not deter him from keeping his central cam-
paign promises. In Obama’s case, it means extending tax
cuts to the middle class, providing additional assistance to
college students and revamping health care.
However, after he is inaugurated, Obama and a
Democratically-controlled House and Senate will inherit a
batch of red ink, though huge, that does not fully capture
the scope of the problem. Consider this: When George W.
Bush assumed office in 2001, Bill Clinton left him with a
budget surplus of $128 billion. On the other hand, Bush
has posted a budget deficit every year in office; by 2009, it
is expected to reach $482 billion. And that does not
include another $80 billion spent on the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
After a $700 billion financial services bailout – or what
should be called “No Bank Left Behind” – Obama has
already stated that a second bailout will be needed, this
one for middle class families and those with troubled home
mortgages. This will come while the jury is still out on
whether the initial $700 billion will be effective.
An article in the New York Times indicates that banks
intend to use the bailout money to acquire other banks,
not to make new loans as had been promised by Treasury
Secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr.
Times reporter Joe Nocera said he listened to an Oct. 17
conference call between a JPMorganChase executive and
company employees. This was four days after the company
agreed to take $25 billion in federal funding as part of the
bailout program.
“What we do think it will help us do is perhaps be a little
more active on the acquisition side ...” the executive said.
As for making more loans to consumers, the official said:
“We would think that loan volume will continue to go
down as we continue to tighten credit to fully reflect the
high cost of pricing on the loan side.”
After listening to the conversation, Nocera wrote: “It is
starting to appear as if one of the Treasury’s key rationales
for the recapitalization program – namely, that it will
cause banks to start lending again – is a fig leaf, the
Treasury’s version of the weapons of mass destruction.”
Had Obama not been elected, it would have been a major
setback for the Supreme Court. However, his victory is
not expected to change the 5-4 edge that centrists are bare-
ly hold. At least, it is unlikely to change during Obama’s
first term. The two oldest Supreme Court justices – John
Paul Stevens, 88, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75 --- are lib-
erals. If they are the first to leave the court, Obama will get
a chance to replace a liberal with a liberal, which won’t
change the court’s present balance. If McCain had been
elected, he could have tilted the court to the far right by
replacing a liberal with yet another conservative, thus
impacting the court for several generations.
Perhaps even more important than the Supreme Court,
which hears only 0.1 percent of the cases appealed each
year, Obama should be able to restore some balance in the
lower courts. According to the National Journal, 54 per-
cent of District Court judges were appointed by
Republican presidents and 56 percent of all appeals
judges. It would probably take a second Obama term to
shift the balance in both the Supreme Court and the dis-
trict and appeals levels.
Obama will be able to make an immediate imprint on how
the country treats the least among us and deliver what
George W. Bush only promised – compassion. Sure, there
will be pressure on Obama to shift more toward the cen-
ter-right and he has done this on some issues, such as the
death penalty. However, he has a straight-A voting record
on issues important to African-Americans, according to
the NAACP Legislative Report Card. And throughout
his campaign, he did not back away from supporting affir-
mative action or equal justice.
Unlike the past eight years, we’ll be able to go to bed at
night knowing that the president of the United States is
not hostile to our concerns. This is the change that not
only have we been waiting for, the world has been waiting
with us. It has been a long time coming, but it was worth
the wait.

South Carolina United States Senator Lindsey Graham knows
the difficulty in receiving the vote of black South Carolinians. "I
have to work hard to receive the confidence, support and vote of
Black citizens of South Carolina.", Senator Graham stated in a
recent telephone interview. I view myself as senator for "all" of the
citizens of this great state and have demonstrated my commitment
to all of South Carolina. Senator Graham sees the greatest needs
of South Carolina being broken down into four distinct areas. 1.
Education, 2. Health Care, 3. Jobs 4. Improving the State's
Infrastructure. "I have worked tirelessly with Representative
Clyburn on various initiatives directly supporting needs of the
black community. working together "everyone will rise together as
a state".
Working in concert with Representative Clyburn we have been
able to provide funding for roads, sewage, and water projects in
the rural counties of South Carolina. It is imperative that we all
work to improve not only education for educational opportunities
of our citizens, but work to keep our graduates in the workforce in
South Carolina. I am an ardent supported of all of South
Carolina's Historical Black Colleges and Universities. "In fact,
explained the senator, I have been commencement speaker, spo-
ken, or met on every HBC in South Carolina." Some of the initia-
tives I have supported have been waiving student loans for black
students that agree to teach in rural and poor communities or
Title One Schools. Citizens getting good paying jobs in South
Carolina are a key to our state's economic upward mobility in the
state. The support of Charter Schools for parents to have a way of
escaping failing schools is one of my main educational objectives
I strongly support community heath centers that will provide
good heath care for all citizens, especially in poor communities.
Providing, Pell Grants, and other financial aid for nurses and
other college students will increase the educational level of our
state.
"I support job fairs throughout the state to help pair college grad-
uates and other citizens looking for jobs to help raise the econom-
ic base of the community.
"I am not opposed to crossing party lines to help the citizens of
South Carolina". I just don't ask for the black citizen's support I
work hard to earn their support. This is why I feel so proud to
have received the endorsement of a great preacher and communi-
ty leader in Rev. Charles Jackson, pastor of Brookland Baptist
Church in West Columbia. Pastor Jackson said "A great friend
and servant of our state is Lindsey Graham In the six years he has
served in the Senate, he has distinguished himself as one of our
most respected and influential Senators. I am encouraged by
Senator Graham's sincere efforts to reach out to the African
American community. He is very thoughtful, engaging and
responsive to concerns we may have."

THE LONG ROAD HOME
Tonight as I collect my thoughts on the past two years of the
high and lows of the Presidential race, I can hardly contain my
emotions. Tuesday is going to be an extremely long day for me
while I await the results of who will be the next President of these
United States of America. I am hopeful, as many of you are, that
Barack Obama will emerge as the 44th President. Actually, the
next president will be the 43rd President since Grover Cleveland
served two terms that were not consecutive terms. If Barack wins,
he will go down in history as the 43rd or 44th President. He
would be the first African American President and that is more
than I had ever expected during my lifetime. As unreal as the pos-
sibility may seem, it would be the end of the long road home. It
would be the highly improbable conclusion of a race that started
on little more than a wing and a prayer. A win for Obama would
vindicate America. A
victory would not excuse her decades of discriminatory and
unwarranted behavior over the years but would indicate her will-
ingness to accept her people for who they really are. It would send
a message to the world that she is ready to recognize her people
who are as diverse as crayons and as intelligent as Einstein.
Obama’s victory will be bittersweet since his grandmother,
Madelyn Dunham, passed on the eve of the most talked about
and controversial election in history. She could not wait another
day to see her grandson become the next Commander-in-Chief.
She had an appointment with her Commander-in-Chief. As one
of my nieces said tonight as we reflected upon the death of
Obama’s grandmother, she said she went on ahead to seal the
Presidency for him with the Maker. However, like most grand-
mothers, they play an integral in helping to raise their grandchil-
dren. They teach them to leave the world a better place. The vic-
tory would be bittersweet for me since my mother did not live to
see this day. My mother was quiet but quite a fighter. She fought
fiercely against discrimination. She wanted so much for her chil-
dren. And I want so much for mine. All mothers whether effec-
tive or not want what is best for their children. I
want my children to grow up in a world that will recognize them
for who they are and not discriminate against them for who they
have made them out to be.
That is why we make the sacrifices that we do. That is why
we rake and scrape to send our children to school. That’s why we
constantly encourage them to be all that they can be. We work
hard to prepare our children for opportunities so when they
become available they will be ready to step up to the plate.
The journey for equality is far from over but we are bound
to get there. I have never seen the excitement in other elections as
I have seen in this one. I can remember the excitement I felt vot-
ing for the first time for President Kennedy. It was my first time
voting since I had become of age. Then I felt the same excitement
when I voted for President Clinton but nothing compares to the
excitement I feel in this election. It is so surreal.
I can’t wait to wake up on Wednesday morning to pinch
myself. I am confident that we will see a new America coming out
of this election. If for some reason Obama is not victorious, I still
have high hopes that we are moving this country in the right direc-
tion.
On our long road home, we have encountered many diffi-
cult days. There were days when we thought the sun would never
shine again but we were crazy enough to believe in an unseen
God. I wish to publicly acknowledge God in how history has
unfolded. Our struggles have not gone unnoticed. And on our
long road home, thousands of our people died. And while so
many did not live to see this day, we are here to carry the torch for
them. After all, Obama had the “Audacity of Hope” to believe that
he could and I have the “Audacity of Hope” to believe that the
American people will send Obama to the White House.
Celebrations, Good
Behavior on Nov. 5
Good Morning My People - After watching the final debate the
other night, it dawned on me that Obama could actually win this
thing. If that happens, there will be a lot of people (some of our co-
workers included) who will be afraid that an Obama presidency
will usher in the end of days. They'll be watching us on November
5th (the day after the election) for signs of the end times. To
keep the peace and keep a lot of folks from getting nervous, I think
we should develop a list of acceptable celebrations and behaviors
we should probably avoid - at least for the first few days:
1. No crying, hugging or shouting "Thank you Lord" - at least
not in public
2 No high-fives - at least not unless the area is clear and there
are no witnesses
3 No laughing at the McCain/Palin supporters
4 No calling in sick on November 5th. They'll get nervous if
too many of us don't show up.
5 We're allowed to give each other knowing winks or nods in
passing. Just try to keep from grinning too hard.
6. No singing loudly, We've come this Far By Faith (it will be
acceptable to hum softly)
7. No bringing of barbeque ribs or fried chicken for lunch in
the company lunchroom for at least a week (no chittlings at all)
(this may make us seem to ethnic)
8. No leaving kool-aid packages at the water fountain (this
might be a sign that poor folks might be getting a break through)
9. No Cupid Shuffle during breaks (this could indicate a little
too much excitement)
10. Please no Moving on Up music (we are going to try to
remain humble)
11. No doing the George Jefferson dance (unless you're in your
office with the door closed)
12. Please try not to yell----BOOOO YAH!
13. Just in case you're wondering, Doing the Running Man, cab-
bage patch, or a backhand spring on the highway is 100% okay.
If I've missed anything feel free to add to the list. I just want to
make sure we're all on the same page when Obama brings this
thing home on November 5th.

“One of the key, if not piv-
otal issues that will face the
newly elected U.S.
President, is to successful-
ly redefine American for-
eign policy strategies
amidst impending interna-
tional crisis, military
engagements, mounting
cost of sustaining U.S.
troops in Iraqi, all while
repairing eroded interna-
tional diplomatic relations
and strategic global coali-
tions in the community of
nations,” says Sawyer. “The
newly elected President
must effectively do the
aforementioned while
countering weapons of
mass destruction prolifera-
tion - especially amidst the
hostilities, peculiarities
and sensitivities of the Gulf
Region, Pakistan and
stances.
We will surely see more of the
same as the pain of the reces-
sion, and maybe even a depres-
sion, moves up the ladder
toward the affluent. We will
see more usury interest rates,
more restrictions on lending,
especially for homes and busi-
nesses, and more backroom
deals being cut between
greedy corporate bigwigs and
corrupt politicians. With all of
that going on, Black people
need all the leverage, influ-
ence, and power we can get,
because you know we are
always the ones who get the
worst from hard times.
The CBG is not a panacea
that will cure all of our ills, but
it certainly will change the way
banks do business with us, and
it will change how we view
and deal with banks. I have
seen it with my own eyes in the
Maryland/DC area, as well as
in other cities where CBG
Chapters exist.
It only makes sense to be in a
position to “deal” with banks
on a serious level and obtain
maximum reciprocity for the
dollars they hold for us, espe-
cially among our Black
churches. Billions of dollars
every year going from our
pews to their vaults, and in
many cases across this country
all we do is complain about
how we are mistreated by the
banks.
It makes no sense at all to keep
up the constant refrain of mis-

Sawyer also points out that

ernment must be restored

ricula that’s on the mind of

African-American educa-
tional experts, including
Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu,
author of “Countering the
Conspiracy to Destroy
Black Boys,” have contend-
ed that the more Black
children learn about their
noble African heritage, the
better their chances of self-
esteem that will cause
improved educational per-
formance.
But, often, the contribu-
tions of African-Americans
are not fully included in
classroom teaching of
American history.
“After dealing with the
economy, it is imperative
that cultural education
gets a lot of serious atten-
tion in our schools – and
many of us have done it
without hate and anger,”
says Williams, chair of the
National Congress of
Black Women, Inc. “We
must teach the true history
of our nation – the good,
the bad and the ugly, and
resist the urge to label any-
body unpatriotic for point-
ing out and wanting to
change what is not good.”

ANY entity in our communi-

the economy is in a tailspin; at
such a time as this, when the
“big boys” are wringing their
hands and pondering a flying
leap from the 44th floor; at
such a time as this, when eco-
nomic fear grips those whose
greatest fear, prior to now,
was a double bogey; and at
such a time as this, when there
is so much economic uncer-
tainty yet the ever-present cer-
tainty that Black people will
continue at the bottom of the
economic spectrum; at such a
time as this, we must act!
The tools we need are at our
fingertips; all we need to do is
use them. Our collective eco-
nomic resources cannot be
denied, but we cannot contin-
ue to allow those resources,
the lifeblood of our house-
holds, our neighborhoods, and
our churches, to leave and

incorporation of the entire
community educational
programs by creating “suc-
cess activities” for children
instead of “failure activi-
ties” that so often distract
and engage them.
“So rather than a new
round of tests standardized
on middle class White kids
and testing Black inner
city children on things they
haven’t been taught, we
would be taking back con-
trol over our children’s
minds and their socializa-
tion,” says Hare. “Right
now we have lost control of
our children’s minds.
We’ve lost the authority to
discipline, at home and at
school, and we are no
longer able to give our chil-
dren a clear core to their
personalities or to prepare
them for what we want
them to be or become.”
The quality of education
across the board must be
addressed, says Wade
Henderson, president and
CEO of the Leadership
Conference on Civil
Rights. However, citizens
must realize that it’s the
community – not just the
president – who must do
most of the work.
“Unfortunately, the presi-
dent’s role in education is
limited as it is not a civil
right provided by the
Constitution,” Henderson
says. “Our job in the civil
rights community is to
make the country aware
that quality education is a
right for all, and that if
states won’t act; the federal
government should step
in…For the Black commu-
nity, there is no more
important issue on their
minds.”
Henderson concludes,
“Access to a high quality
public education is still a
fundamental right upon
which all others depend;
and yet 50 years later, the
promise of Brown remains
unfulfilled. Inequality is
rampant by almost every
measure. We as a nation
spend more money on our
public education system
than any other country in
the world, yet we are still
miles behind in educating
our children. Spending
that money more effectively
and reauthorizing “No
Child Left Behind” to
make it work for students,
par
never return. At such a time as
this, we have the opportunity
to establish and solidify our
presence, our resolve, and our
unity around a sound econom-
ic principle - and the Maat
principle of Reciprocity.
The Biblical passage upon
which this article is based
comes from the Book of
Esther, a young lady who had
to make a tough decision
regarding the future of her
people. After seeing what hap-
pened to Queen Vashti when
she defied the king, and after
hearing the words of her
cousin, Mordecai, “Who
knows whether you have come
to the kingdom for such a time
as this?” Esther realized that
even at the risk of losing her
own life, she must act. Why?
Because it was the right thing
to do and the right time to do
it.
We are also faced with a deci-
sion, maybe not a physical life
and death decision, but cer-
tainly an economic decision
that will impact our daily lives.
What will we do in our
moment of “such a time as
this?” Will we step forward as
Esther did, as David did, as
Joshua and Caleb did? Or will
we cower in a dark corner of
anonymity, afraid to speak out
and afraid to organize a chap-
ter of the CBG? We must not
be timid; we must let the
“kings” know that they will
treat us fairly or they will not
be treated to our dollars.

Doubling Rate For Diabetes
Cases, Obesity Is To Blame

Diabetes cases have nearly
doubled in the past ten years
since the nation's obesity per-
centage have went up.
According to the first state by
state review of new diagnoses,
the South has the highest rate
of Diabetes. West Virginia
was the worst where 13 out of
1,00 were diagnosed between
2005-07. Minnesota has the
lowest diagnoses of 5 in 1,000.
Nationally, the rate of new
cases climbed from about 5 per
1,000 in the mid-1990s to 9 per
1,000 in the middle of this
decade.
Roughly 90 percent of cases
are Type 2 diabetes, the form
linked to obesity.
Diabetes is a major health
problem for African
Americans for whom the
prevalence rate is 1.6 times the
rate for whites.
The findings dovetail with
trends seen in obesity and lack
of exercise — two health meas-
ures where Southern states
also rank at the bottom.
Obesity rate are high among
African Americans, particular-
ly African American women.
"It isn't surprising the problem
is heaviest in the South — no
pun intended," agreed Matt
Petersen, who oversees data
and statistics for the American
Diabetes Association.

Kirtland of the Centers for
Disease Control and
Prevention, provides an up-to-
date picture of where the dis-
ease is exploding. The infor-
mation should be a big help as
the government and health
insurance companies decide
where to focus prevention
campaigns, Petersen said.
Diabetes was the nation's sev-
enth-leading cause of death in
2006, according to the CDC.
More than 23 million
Americans have diabetes, and
the number is rapidly growing.
About 1.6 million new cases
were diagnosed among adults
last year.
Type 2 diabetics do not pro-
duce or use insulin, a hormone
needed to convert sugar into
energy. The illness can cause
sugar to build up in the body,
leading to complications such
as heart disease, blindness,
kidney failure and poor circula-
tion that leads to foot amputa-
tions.
The study involved a random-
digit-dialed survey of more
than 260,000 adults.
Participants were asked if they
had ever been told by a doctor
that they have diabetes, and
when the diagnosis was made.
The comparisons between
1995-97 and 2005-07 covered
HEALTH
only the 33 states for which the
CDC had complete data for
both time periods.
The researchers had data for
40 states for the years 2005-07.
West Virginia, South
Carolina, Alabama, Georgia,
Texas and Tennessee had the
highest rates, all at 11 cases per
1,000 or higher. Puerto Rico
was about as high as West
Virginia. Minnesota, Hawaii
and Wyoming had the lowest
rates.
It is not entirely clear why
some states were worse than
others. Older people, blacks
and Hispanics tend to have
higher rates of Type 2 dia-
betes, and the South has large
concentrations of all three
groups. However, West
Virginia is overwhelmingly
white.
The report asked about diag-
nosed diabetes only. Because
an estimated one in four dia-
betics have not been diag-
nosed, the findings probably
underestimate the problem,
said Angela Liese, a diabetes
researcher at the University of
South Carolina.
The underestimates may be
particularly bad in the rural
South and other areas where
patients have trouble getting
health care, she noted.

Surgeons, one in every three
Americans older than 65 expe-
riences a fall, making it the
leading cause of injuries to sen-

To help prevent falls and bone
fractures, the academy recom-
mends that seniors:

nation. Make sure any cardiac

are fully evaluated.

a diet with adequate dietary
calcium and vitamin D for

smoke, and avoid excessive use

French Fries That Won’t Clog Your Arteries

you been avoiding them? How
can you? Either you are
extremely strong willed or you

Eating healthy is all about
changing how you eat the
things you love, not depriving
yourself. If you have been liv-
ing without fries, I’ve got great
news for you. Here's a low-
fat recipe that will allow you to
enjoy those little crunchy
sticks of potatoes again:
Deceptively Skinny French
Fries
• Olive oil spray
• 2 pounds baking
potatoes
• 1/4 tsp salt, plus more
to taste, if desired
• 1 1/2 tsp extra virgin
olive oil
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400
degrees F.
2. Lightly mist a medium non-
stick baking sheet with olive
oil spray.
3. Use a crinkle cutter to peel
potatoes by cutting close to
the edges on each side and
end. Discard peels. Then use
crinkle cutter to cut peeled
potatoes into 1/3-inch thick
sticks (they will vary in length).
4. Toss potato sticks with salt
and extra virgin olive oil.
Spread them in a single layer
on the prepared baking sheet.
5. Bake for 15 minutes, then flip
and bake for another 16 to 18
minutes or until just crisp on
the outside and tender inside.
Season with additional salt to
taste and serve.

I have many female
patients come to my office
complaining about pain in
their muscles. They have
been to several other doc-
tors and have received
medication for the pain
without results. The gener-
al over-the-counter medica-
tions, including prescribed
prescription medicines
(narcotics), were not suc-
cessful in relieving the dis-
tressing pain which often
caused depression and
sleep disturbances. The
patient also revealed that
the muscles experienced
point tenderness and usual-
ly occurred around the
shoulders, lower back and
knees.
Usually, blood tests, x-rays
and MRI’s were normal.
Of course, the patient was
very upset that symptoms
had not been relieved. In
other words, the pain
could not be explained by
the physician. I am sure
that you recall the saying,
“sticks and stones may
break your bones, but
names will never hurt you.”

rare infectious diseases
began to appear among
young, homosexual men.

in 1984. Then Dr. Gerald
Friedland of Montefiore

Bronx in 1986 recognized
that this viral disease did
not discriminate in causing
AIDS, but every person
was at risk who came in

that time took a bow on the
stage of this planet and
until this day, no one can
explain how or where it all

Bill Collectors Get Tough,
and Complaints Surge

NEW YORK - After sever-
al years in which
Americans were buying
things on credit they could-
n't afford, a rapidly
increasing number are
complaining about getting
harassed and abused by bill
collectors.
Nearly 71,000 people filed
such complaints with the
Federal Trade
Commission last year,
roughly double the number
in 2003. In addition, more
than 14,000 complained to
the Better Business
Bureau. Thousands more
lodged grievances with
state and city officials.
"And it is going to get
worse," warned David
Polino, a Better Business
Bureau expert on collec-
tion agencies and president
of the BBB chapter in
upstate New York. "With
the recession, with the hor-
rible credit problems, this
is going to be off the
charts."
Regulators and consumer
groups say the rise in com-
plaints reflects the rapidly
increasing number of
Americans who took on
more debt than they could
handle during the free-
spending, easy-credit days
that preceded the current
economic crisis. The com-
plaints are also being
attributed to the explosive
growth in the number of
companies that buy up bad
consumer debt at a dis-

make borrowing money for

able to help you pay for col-
lege."
Despite the crazy credit
crunch, students and parents
can still find federal student
loans regardless of credit
score, income, assets or collat-
eral. Federal law fixes student
loans at a competitive interest
rate, so families won't pay
higher rates in a troubled
economy.
Although other consumer
credit is drying up, students
and parents can still get feder-
al student loans through Sallie
Mae. The company is ready to
make federal student loans to
every student who needs one
at every school across the
country.
Holler encourages students
to educate themselves on how
to get college money. She
offers the following tips to stu-
dents and parents looking to
pay for higher education:
Find free money. Apply for
financial aid to access free
money. Tap grants and schol-
arships by filing the Free
Application For Federal
Student Aid, also called the
FAFSA.
Fully explore federal student
loans. Federal loans are the
largest source of student loans
and offer more favorable terms
than private loans, so get as
many federal loans as possible
before resorting to private
loans.
If scholarships, grants and
federal loans do not fully cover
the cost, fill any gaps with pri-
vate loans.
Holler stresses that it's
important to consider the full
cost of college and develop a
comprehensive plan to pay for
tuition as well as other college-
related expenses.

Bob Silvers of San Jose,
Calif., said a company
called Bay Area Credit
Service has been hounding
him over a disputed $60
ambulance bill from 2002
by bombarding him with
calls that begin early in the
morning and sometimes
continue all day.
"I get between three and
nine calls a day, six days a
week," said Silvers, who
claims the agency has
ignored his demands to
stop calling. "It's just con-
stant harassment."
One 72-year-old retiree tar-
geted by the company,

Florence Gifford of Gypsy,
W.Va., said she didn't
believe she owed anything,
but forked over $304 any-
way after collectors used
foul language and threat-
ened to send a sheriff's
deputy to her door.
The collection industry is
quick to point out that
complaints don't necessari-
ly equal improper conduct.
The company being sued in
West Virginia, Charles
Howell and Associates,
denied its collectors had
used bad language or
threatened anyone with
arrest.
“There’s no lick of any sort
of proof," said the compa-
ny's president, Gregory
Wells. "The only thing they
have is the word of some-
one who owes money and
is trying to get out of pay-
ing."
Ernestine Williams, a 55-
year-old widow in
Morristown, N.J., walked
into her bank over the sum-
mer to make a deposit, only
to learn that her account
had been frozen at the
request of a company that
purchased her delinquent
Pep Boys repair bill.
The company is demand-
ing $2,135 immediately to
unfreeze her account - an
amount that includes about
$400 in fees and interest
on top of her original debt.
Williams said she has had
financial problems since
her husband died and
needs more time to pay.
"It's ludicrous," Williams
said. "I'm trying to get
back on my feet so I can
pay my bills. It's embar-
rassing. I've already
pawned all my jewelry. I
don't have anything.

St. Louis Program Helps Ex-Offenders Turn From Life of Crime

After nine years of criminal
activity, Antonio Bobo
decided to leave that life
and go straight.
“You just get tired of sell-
ing drugs, being shot at,
being robbed and robbing
people,” said Bobo, a for-
mer star athlete at Vashon
High School.
Thanks to a community
partnership led by Area
Resources for Community
and Human Services
(ARCHS) formed to help
move ex-offenders from
prison to the workforce,
Bobo is working legally for
one of the first times in his
life n even after his incar-
ceration.
He is grateful for the job
that he landed at Midas as
a technician two months
ago.
“I’m blessed,” Bobo said.
St. Louis is home to more
than 22,500 ex-offenders.
Initiated last year by a $1.9
million U.S. Labor
Department grant,
ARCHS teamed with 18
community partners
(including businesses, the
justice system, faith-based
organizations, and commu-
nity groups) to provide ex-
offender support.
They are coming back to
the same challenges faced
prior to incarceration,
including poverty, high
unemployment and crime,
said Wendell Kimbrough,
CEO of ARCHS. But the
partnership, now almost in
its second year, is making a
difference.
In the first year of the reen-
try program, 640 ex-
offenders have been served,
surpassing the goal of 488.
With the help of reentry
partners, such as Rankin
Technical Training, more
than 350 of those have been
placed in jobs with living
wages.
Studies have shown that
unemployed ex-offenders
are three times more likely
to return to prison than
those who land jobs.
“Everyone deserves a sec-
ond chance,” said Lisa
Henderson, service manag-
er of Midas Auto Service,
whose company hires
ARCHS’ reentry partici-
pants. All she asks is that
they come to work, do the
job and meet the minimum
requirements to be a gener-
al service technician.
Prior to prison, Bobo was
a former star basketball
player at Vashon High
School who had signed
with Oklahoma University,
but never played.
He said he started selling
drugs at first to pay his
tuition, but then quickly
got sucked into the quick
money and fast lifestyle.
“When you’re on the
streets, time really passes
you by,” said Bobo, who
had gotten shot twice in
the legs. “I was so attracted
to the lifestyle that when I
looked up, I had a federal
case and it was too late for
me to go back to school.”
A drug conviction landed
him 36 months in federal
prison.
Bobo said he was on the

for jobs from fast food to
warehouse work after his
release nearly two years
ago. But he had been
turned down time and time
again.
