BASF Performance Chemicals Pigments for Plastics

BASF is a leading manufacturer and marketer in the worldwide plastics industry. With global distribution, technical support and manufacturing, BASF has the infrastructure to effectively meet the demands of local and worldwide markets. BASF supplies a full range of organic and inorganic pigments, preparations, UV stabilizers and other additives to the plastics industry. Applications for our products include:

BASF-branded Inorganic Pigments

Meteor & Meteor Plus Complex Inorganic Color Pigments BASF Meteor and Meteor Plus pigments have been developed to meet the most challenging conditions nature can deliver. They are lightfast and resistant to temperature extremes, chemicals and long-term exposure to weather, making them excellent color solutions for challenging indoor, outdoor and industrial applications. Sicopal Pigments Inorganic pigments with spinel structure based on various metal oxides. All Sicopal pigments have outstanding fastness to light and weathering.

Sicotan Pigments Inorganic mixed-phase yellow and brown pigments. They have excellent fastness to light, weathering, and chemicals, even in extreme reductions. Sicotans are suitable for use in combination with organic pigments for brilliant shades with high hiding power. Their high heat stability makes them suitable in most resins. Our chrome and nickel yellows are available in low-dust, free-flowing forms. Sicotrans Pigments Transparent iron oxides with excellent fastness to light, weathering, chemical. The high heat stability make them suitable in many resins.

Technical data
Light fastness (LF) The light fastness in HDPE is determined on injectionmolded plaques of approx. 3 mm thickness and the light fastness in PVC on rolled sheets of plasticized PVC. The exposure to light is carried out according to DIN EN ISO 105-B 01 and the light fastness assessed on the wool scale described in DIN EN ISO 105-B 01. Light fastness 8 = outstanding Light fastness 1 = very poor Heat stability The heat stability is determined according to DIN EN 12877-1 on a white reduction (inorganic pigments 1:4) and in full shade (inorganic pigments 1%) in HDPE in an injection molding machine. The temperature is raised from 200 C to 300 C in 20 steps with a 5-minute interval between successive steps. The heat stability is the highest temperature at which the color difference compared with a HDPE (CIElab 1964, D 65, 10 observer, DIN 6174) plaque formed at 200 C is E < 3.0. Fastness to migration The fastness to migration is determined as described in DIN 53775, Part 3, on a colored specimen in contact with a white-pigmented PVC film at the pigment concentration specified in this shade card. A different concentration may result in a different fastness rating. Fastness to migration 5 = outstanding Fastness to migration 1 = very poor Weather fastness (WF) The weather fastness is determined on HDPE injection-molded plaques of approx. 3 mm thickness. The weathering is carried out according to DIN EN ISO 4892-2 for 3000 hours. Pigments are tested in concentrations of 1% and in white reduction of 1:4. Weather fastness 5 = outstanding Weather fastness 1 = very poor

Standard depth of shade The reduction ratio was determined on FPVC Basic Mix A (DIN 53775, Part 1) by the method described in DIN 53235. It indicates the number of parts of chromatic pigment that must be mixed with one part of the TiO2 to obtain 1/3 standard depth of shade. It is a guideline value only and may vary according to the processing method and polymer. Bulk density The bulk density is the weight in grams of uncompacted pigment that occupies a volume of 1 cm3. It is determined according to DIN ISO 171. Density The density is determined in a pycnometer as described in DIN EN ISO 787-10. Suitability Recommendations for specific plastics are given in the suitability table. + = suitable - = unsuitable o = suitable under certain conditions; preIiminary trials recommended Lucolor 3.2 Our Lucolor 3.2 pigment database provides numerous further data. The database is available as a CD-ROM. Most of the data can also be obtained from the respective Internet page of BASF SE. Warping tendency The warping tendency in injection-molded articles of HDPE has been determined following DIN EN ISO 294-4.
