Organization Name: Hands On Science Partnership

Program Name: Hands On Science Partnership Website: www.handsonsciencepartnership.com Program Description: The Hands-on Science Partnership is comprised of industry leaders who are deeply passionate and care about quality instruction of science, technology, engineering and math through the use of hands-on materials, tools, and programs. HOSP is the only national organization that focuses on advocating for the inclusion and the expansion of hands-on activities, programs, tools and curriculum. We work together to improve student achievement by increasing the access that students and teachers have to handson science and technology education equipment. We accomplish this through increased resources and support for inquirybased curricula, tools, materials, and technology. We believe that as this support increases, the gap in student achievement in science, engineering, technology and math will decrease regardless of grade, age or demographics. Our purpose is to inspire, connect and advocate with all stakeholders groups that have an important interplay in the realm of STEM education. Teachers to hands-on materials and the companies that supply them and to decision makers in their state to increase the support for how hands-on science and technology improves student learning Policy makers to important data, research, and information about how hands-on science and technology improves student learning Students to best-in-class materials and resources that truly engage them in critical thinking Our member companies to important industry trends, research, decision makers, and new markets that will increase the use of hands-on materials and tools with students and teacher. Service Offering: HOSP engages with strategic partners that can support, augment, provide proof of effectiveness, and extend hands-on learning beyond isolated experiences. Our aim is for all students to know and understand the ever changing world in such a way that gives them the abilities and knowledge to make informed and educated decisions. These life-long and 21st Century skills allow students to make relevant decisions about their lives based on what they know and what they have experienced. HOSP believes the most important component of STEM is to learn by doing. While the concept may be simple, the practice is challenging. HOSP believes superior hands-on teaching and learning requires: Quality and well-designed materials, tools, kits, programs and supplies based on research about how children learn. Appropriate and ongoing professional development, learning, training and support for the correct, engaging and safe use of all materials. Educator/faculty willingness, enthusiasm and engagement for this way of teaching and learning with their students. Administrator/leadership enthusiasm and support for this type of instruction. The following materials provided by our member companies create the kinds of learning environments for students and teachers where inquiry, critical thinking and skills development accelerate understanding about the world through the lens of science. Program Name: STEM Virtual Field Trips Program Description: We have created STEM Virtual Field trips for our district. These virtual field trips consist of 25min-2 hours of footage in a local STEM industry. We employ master teachers to take that footage and create 10-12 lessons (1 unit) around the STEM content and skills applicable to that industry. In order to receive the video clips and lesson plans teachers are required to attend a 4 hour PD session. In each of these experiences students see how real people in our community use STEM in their daily lives. Students view a video clip, then complete an inquiry activity, a reading, a simulation around that content. The goal is that we will have at least 1 of these units in every grade PreK-12 for our students, so that they understand that taking challenging math and science courses in high school can lead to college/post-secondary education with a good job. Program Name: Correlated Science and Mathematics (CSM) Website: http://www.cose.txstate.edu/mathematics/mixitup/whatiscorrelation.html Program Description: Correlated Science and Mathematics (CSM) is an innovative professional development (PD) model that enables middle school teachers to support STEM education by integrating science and mathematics curriculum effectively. Although both the science and mathematics national standards recommend integration, without effective PD models to facilitate it, broad-scale integration will not occur. Campus administrators report that teachers trained in CSM are able to effectively align mathematics and science concepts, properly use each disciplines language, and increase the proper use of manipulatives and equipment. Service Offering: The CSM model of PD links science and mathematics more thoroughly and uniquely by incorporating seven fundamental goals: (a) teaching each discipline for conceptual understanding, (b) using each disciplines proper language, (c) using standards-based learning objectives, (d) identifying the natural links between the disciplines, (e) identifying language that is confusing to students, (f) identifying the parallel ideas between the disciplines when possible, and (g) using an inquiry format for science and mathematics when appropriate.
