Additionally,Ihadtheopportunitytoparticipateinan interactivesessionwithoneoftheleadersoftheDisneyInstitute whospokeaboutculture,customers,andsuccess.Thespeaker, Chris,spokeabouttheimportanceofcustomerserviceand outcomes.Henotedtheimportanceoftreatingeverycustomer,beit acolleague,vendororpatientinourcase,asamemberofour family.ThisculturethatDisneyhascreatedhasmadetheir companyoneofthebestorganizationsintheworld.Itookawaya fewthoughtsthatIwouldlikeforallofustoconsider.First, rememberthatwearehereforthepatientandthatitisthe responsibilityofeachandeveryoneofustoassurethatthe patientsneedsaremetateveryturn.Second,everyemployee whethertheyaredirectpatientcareprovidersorbehindthescenes ultimatelyhasaneffectonthepatientandthepatientsperception ofPennPresbyterian.Andlastly,inthespiritofDisneywemake magiceveryday,notthroughentertainmentbutthroughinnovation inhealthcare,exceptionalpatientcareandamazingoutcomes.That onlyoccurswhenweworkasateamandtowardsourultimategoal ofpatientcareexcellence.

ThismonthwemeetKimDeppert,MBA,MCM,Associate HospitalDirector KimDepperthasbeenatPennPresbyteriansince1988.She startedastheInfectionControlCoordinatorsinceshehasa MastersDegreeinMicrobiology.ThatwassomethingIdidnot know.DuringhertimeinInfectionControl,Kimdecidedto returntoschoolandgetherMBA. AftercompletingherMBAKimbecametheDirectorof QualitywhichincludedtheInfectionControlarea.Sheledthat effortfor2yearsandthenPresbymergedwithHUP.From 1996to1998KimworkedwiththeteampreparingtheCPUP physiciansonbothcampusesfortheirfirstJointCommission survey.Certainlyagreatexperienceinsurveyreadiness. KimwasrecruitedbacktothePresbycampusin1999and movedintoseveralnewandexcitingchallenges.Initiallyshe assumedthepositionofSafetyDirector.Shesaiditwasagreat experiencebecausethehospitalwasgettingreadyfortheY2K conversionandshelearnedalot.Nextshetookonthe managementoftheDepartmentofSurgery,includingthe OutpatientPracticesatPresby.Shecouldcertainlydrawonher qualitybackgroundinthisnewchallenge.Shealsoworkedon specialprojectswiththethenChairofSurgery,Dr.Buyske. Alongthewayshealsopickedupmanagementofsomeofthe Medicinepractices.Kimsnextchallengewastosetupthe NewJerseypracticesfortheHematologyandOncology service.Shesaidshelikedtheopportunitytodoastartupwith anewmarket,recruitnewphysicians,andgrownewbusiness. LastAugustKimwaspromotedtoAssociateExecutive DirectorreportingtoMicheleVolpe.Inhernewroleshe gainedresponsibilityforthelabwhichbroughtherbacktoher healthcareroots.Shealsotookonmedicalimagining.She hascertainlytouchedallaspectsofhospitaladministration.
