Sport Markets and Industries


Organisation of the seminars
The class will be divided into two seminar groups, A and B, of approximately 25 students each. Seminar group A will meet on 05.12.11 and 12.12.11 and seminar group B will meet on 09.12.11 and 16.12.11. In each seminar about 12-15 students (working in groups of three) will make an oral presentation on a selected topic. Each oral presentation should be supported by a written report of between 1500 and 2000 words. Students will be allocated to their groups by week two. Both seminar presentations have five sections. One student should take lead responsibility for sections 1 & 2, another student should take lead responsibility for sections 3 & 4, and the third student should take lead responsibility for section 5. Please make it clear on the title/cover page which students were responsible for which sections.

Guidelines for seminar presentations


1 Oral presentations should be crisp and succinct. No more than 15 minutes.

2 Students should prepare a written report to support their presentation. The report should be between 1500 and 2000 words. Remember that it is a report not an essay that you are writing. You should also remember that you are writing for a business audience. Please make it clear which student was responsible for each section of the report. 3 Both the report and the oral presentation will be marked according to the following weighted criteria: 20% communication (which includes the clarity, organisation and style of the written presentation); 30% knowledge (which includes refers to the amount, quality and relevance of the information that you have collected and used in the presentation); 20% reading and research (the use of selected material from a range of sources, critical use of reading); and 30% analysis (level of sophistication of the analysis, links to broader issues in the industry, evaluation of the significance of issues/conclusions, recommendations). 4 For the report and the oral presentation you should assume that your audience comprises business people who are expecting an analytical briefing which will help them make initial decisions about which sectors to investigate further as investment opportunities.

5 You can use Power Point. Power Point presentations should be sent to Dr Mahfoud Amara on or before the 25th November. Dr Amara will then unload the PPT presentations on to Learn so that they can be accessed by all students. The maximum number of Power Point slides that you can use is ten. Do not insert video clips or complex graphics. Your presentation must be compatible with Power Point 2003. A laptop will be made available.

Students should prepare for a business audience of potential investors an analytical business profile of one of the following investment opportunities: a particular sport (extreme sports, football, tennis, golf etc.), activity, (such as gambling, camping and caravanning) a sports team (football, basketball rugby, volleyball etc.) a facility (e.g. major stadium development) a league (US Baseball, US National Football League, Serie A, Formula 1 etc.) a competition (the FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon tennis championships, World Student Games etc) or an event (US Super Bowl, the Olympic Games etc). For your selected sport, team, event etc, your presentation should: 1. Provide a brief description of its structure and organization 2. Identify its market significance 3. Identify the attitude of government towards the sport, team, event etc and the importance of government to commercial success 4. Identify the risks (threats and weaknesses) to the selected investment opportunity 5. Identify the business potential that the investment opportunity presents, such as in relation to marketing, merchandising and broadcasting
