FOREWORD
This catalog has been carefully compiled and arranged as a guide to the selection of Ohio Power Tool
Brushes for a variety of older motors. This catalog has been condensed down from the original version
printed many years ago. The sections still applicable are Section C Brush Dimension Charts and
Section E Brush Picture Charts. The sections are cross-indexed and their uses are as follows:
Section C Brush Dimension Charts. Use this section to identify the correct Ohio Power Tool brush
from a sample. Here you will find three different charts for your reference and corresponding pages:
Numerical Size Chart ..................C-1 thru C-20
Progressive Size Chart ................C-21 thru C-41
Spring Specification Chart ..........C-42 and C-43
Section E Brush Picture Chart. Use this section to identify the correct Ohio Power Tool brush
from either a sample or specification.
To make selection easy, we have first divided all brushes into four broad CLASSIFICATIONS as
to cross-sectional shape:
Square or Rectangular
Wedge
Round
Special Shapes
Then, these CLASSIFICATIONS are subdivided into 15 lettered GROUPS, A to Z. These GROUPS
are distinguished from each other by differences in shunts, springs or heads.
In addition to the standardized brush service shown in this catalog, we are also glad to offer our
specialized engineering service to motor manufacturers and users for the solution of special brush
problems. This sort of cooperation is available any time upon request.

SECTION C
BRUSH DIMENSION CHARTS
The Numerical Size Chart, pages C-1 to C-20, lists brushes
numerically by OHIO BRUSH Number and contains complete
information about each brush.
The Progressive Size Chart, pages C-21 to C-41, lists brushes
by CLASSIFICATIONS and GROUPS (See page C-21) and in
each GROUP progressively by thickness, width and length.
The Spring Specification Chart, pages C-42 to C-43, illustrates
the styles and shapes, and lists the sizes and materials of the
Springs we carry in stock.

165 Illustrations of Typical Carbon Brushes.
This short, comprehensive and carefully illustrated Section makes it easy to find the
OHIO BRUSH Number for ordering any brush from either a sample or a specification.
Arranged on the following pages are 165 drawings, representative of the thousands
of variations among motor brushes. To make selection easy and logical we have
first divided all brushes into four broad CLASSIFICATIONS as to cross sectional
shape 1. Square or Rectangular, 2. Wedge Shaped, 3. Round, 4. Special Shapes.
These CLASSIFICATIONS are subdivided into 15 lettered GROUPS, A to Z. (See
page index on following page). These GROUPS are distinguished from each other
by differences in shunts, springs or heads (Note listing on following page).
Pictured under each GROUP heading are illustrations showing the variations which
occur among brushes of that group as to shoulders, bevels, convex or concave
surfaces, slots, grooves, notches, heads, holes, counterbores, or countersinks,
type and location of shunt or clip connection.
TO IDENTIFY A SPECIFIC BRUSH
FIRST ........From the shape of its cross section determine its CLASSIFICATION
(1,2,3, OR 4 Above).
SECOND....From the shunt, spring or head determine its GROUP (A to X,
following page).
THIRD ........Turn to the pages for the group you have selected and find the illustration
which matches your sample or specification. Under this illustration,
listed progressively by thickness, are the standard sizes of brushes
which are made in this shape. Run down this list until you find the
thickness of your brush and continue until you match width and length.
Following this dimension will be the OHIO BRUSH Number for this
one brush only.
FOURTH ....For final determination of grade of material and other factors not
shown in this Brush Picture Section you may turn to the OHIO BRUSH
Number in the Numerical Size chart (Pages C-1 to C-20) where you
will find complete information about this specific brush.
