Symons Elementary Schools third- through fifthgrade girls are getting ready to run with Girls on the Run, a nonprofit international organization that trains pre-teen girls for a 5k run and emphasizes improving self-awareness through funbased, healthy-living lessons. Were always on the run, but its not just running, coach Kiel Porter said. Registration to join the twice-weekly, after-school program will be Jan. 22 through Feb. 11 and practice will begin on March 13, when the girls will begin by

running a course located around the school building. The program accommodates 15 girls per session and there is a charge for the program. Porter said scholarships are available. Porter began the local program last September. Previously, she spearheaded the Wines Elementary School program in Ann Arbor. Fourth-grader Caralyn Davis joined the group last fall and was eager to register for the new season. Caralyns mother, Amy Dapprich, said her daughter loved being involved and, when she asked Caralyn if she wanted to continue

in the program, Caralyn didnt hesitate to answer with an enthusiastic, Yes, Dapprich said. Running is integrated with lessons that educate girls and empowers them to prevent at-risk behaviors Porter said. However, she will address all issues girls have, such as physical health, activities, image and self-concept. Also on Porters agenda will be teaching healthy eating habits. Porter majored in nutrition at the University of Michigan and is currently working on a masters degree at Eastern Michigan University . Snacks such as fresh vegetables, pretzels, raisins and trail mix, as healthy alternatives to high calorie snack foods, are served at

proud athletic history at Milan High School will get a chance to shine if the schools Raise the Banner fundraising effort is successful. Milans athletic director, David Kaiser, said the goal is to sell 400 raffle tickets at a cost of $25 each to raise $10,000 to buy banners displaying the districts athletic teams accomplishments. Winners of the raffle will be announced Feb. 28 during half-time of the boys basketball season finale against Gabriel Richard. Two $1,000 prizes will be awarded. Money raised will go toward purchasing custom-printed 4-foot-by8-foot vinyl banners that will highlight achievements of each of the districts 22 school-sponsored sports. A trophy case outside the main gymnasium at Milan High School highlights achievements past and present of athletes at the school. The school is trying to raise $10,000 to purchase a banner for every school-sponsored sport at Milan. The banners will be displayed in the gymnasium and highlight conference championships, as well as district, regional and state championships. that a banner hangs for every sport that we sponsor, Kaiser said. Whether its football, track, golf or equestrian, Kaiser said, the emphasis will be to give every Milan school sport a place of honor and a special spot to feature conference championships, as well as district, regional and state championships. School-sponsored sports also include baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Right now, he said, since the high school building is fairly new, a visible display of the rich athletic tradition at Milan is lacking in the school. The banners, he said, will give everyone who comes in the gymnasium, including community members and high school alumni, a sense of accomPLEASE SEE BANNER/5-A

Milan to conduct its own police search

By Jim Pruitt
Special Writer

The city of Milan will handle the responsibility of looking for a new police chief. Mayor Kym Muckler made the decision after talking with City Administrator Benjamin Swayze. The decision is based on the mayors and Swayzes estimation that

city staff have the expertise to conduct the search, therefore saving the cost of hiring a professional search firm. Muckler said another benefit for conducting the search internally is to have more control over the early stages of the process. Council members will be receiving a detailed timeline and will be able to develop a detailed profile

at a work session Jan. 23 before the regular council meeting. The public also will get a chance to speak on the qualities desired in the next chief. In other news, Swayze informed council that the citys new ice rink was scheduled to open this week. The rink will be open to the public during park hours from dawn to dusk.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will host an official opening later with hot chocolate and popcorn. Funding for the rink came from a $5,000 grant from the community foundation, a $2,500 match from Spirit Ford and $2,500 allocated from the Parks Commissions budget. In other news, the Riverside subdivision road

reconstruction project has closed for the winter. The project finished Phase I and the water portion of Phase II. The contractor, DiPonio, will be in the subdivision about once a week to monitor the areas affected by the water work. Crews are expected to return to work at the end of February, weather permitting, to begin storm sewer installation.
