Box1Thisinformationiseitherthecriminalorinfractionnumberassignedtoyourspeedingticket. Thisnumberisnotalwaysgiventoyouwhenthelawenforcementofficerissuesyoutheticket,sodontbe alarmedifthissectionisblankonyourspeedingticket.However,ifthisnumberappearsonyourticket,this willbeyourspeedingticketsassignednumberinthecourtsystem. Box2Thisboxindicatesthecountycourthouseandcourtroomyouoryourattorneywillneedtoappearin onyourcourtdate. Box3Thisisthetimeanddatesetforyourcourtdate. Box4Thisareaindicateshowmanychargesyoureceivedfromthelawenforcementofficer.Withspeeding tickets,youtypicallyareonlychargedwithonecharge:speeding.However,itisnotuncommonforanofficer toalsochargeyouwithothercrimes,suchaslackofinsurance,invalidregistration,oraseatbeltviolation.

Box5Thisiswherethelawenforcementofficerfillsinallofyourpersonalinformationandinformation aboutyourvehicle.Itiscommon,andpermissible,fortheofficertonotfillineveryboxinthispartofthe speedingticket.Also,youmaynoticethattheofficermademistakesinfillinginthisinformation,suchasa misspellingofyourname.However,unlesstheofficerserrororomissionissubstantial,yourspeedingticket willnotbedismissedbecauseoftheofficersmistake. Box6Thisiswhereyoucansigntheticket,acknowledgingthatyoureceivedthespeedingticketandpromise toappearonyourcourtdatethatisstatedinbox3.Itiscommonforofficerstonothaveyousignthisportionof thespeedingticket.Iftheofficerdoesnothaveyousigntheacknowledgement,yourspeedingticketisstillvalid andyouoryourattorneymustappearonyourcourtdate. Box7First,theofficergiveshisorheridentificationinformation(typicallyinitialsandlawenforcement agency).Second,theofficeridentifieswhatthesceneofyourspeedingwaslike.Theofficerwillindicatewhat theweatherwaslike,whatthevisibilitywas,theoveralltrafficconditions,whethertherewasanaccident,and whatyourspeedwas.Again,theofficermayleavesomeportionsofthispartofthespeedingticketblank,and heorshemaymakesomemistakes.But,unlesstheofficersomissionormistakeissubstantial,yourspeeding ticketisnotautomaticallydismissible. Box8Thisisthecountywherethelawenforcementofficerissuedyourspeedingticket.Thecountylistedis whereyouoryourattorneywillbeappearingonyourcourtdate.Also,thecountylistedhereisimportant becausetheresolutionofyourspeeding(whattypesofpleaagreementsaremadeavailabletoyou)maydepend onyourdrivingrecordinthatcounty. Box9Thisareaisprobablythemostimportantpartofyourspeedingticket.Thisareaiswheretheofficer actuallystatesyourspecificspeedingcharge.Theofficerstatesthedateandapproximatetimewhenyouwere pulledover,aswellasthepostedspeedlimitandhowfastyouweretraveling.Theofficerwillalsocheckone of3boxesindicatingwhatNorthCarolinaGeneralStatuteheorsheallegesyouviolated:(a)N.C.G.S.20141 (speeding),(b)N.C.G.S.20141(2)(speedinginaworkzone),or(c)N.C.G.S.20141.1(speedinginaschool zone).Iftheofficermakesamistakeinthispartofticket,suchaswritingdownthewrongdate,thenyoumay beabletogetyourspeedingticketdismissed. Box10Thisareaiswheretheofficercanwritedownanycommentsregardingthecircumstancesofyour speedingticket.Itiscommonfortheofficertoleavethisportionoftheticketblank. Box11Thisisthelocationwheretheofficersignsanddatesyourspeedingticket.Dependingonwhatcounty youwereissuedthespeedingticket,thefailureoftheofficertosignyourspeedingticketmayallowyoutoget yourspeedingticketdismissed. Box12Iftheofficerchecksthisbox,thenyouoryourattorneymustappearonyourcourtdatethatwas describedinbox3(youarenotallowedtojustpayyourspeedingticketandavoidcourt). Box13Iftheofficerchecksthisbox,thenyouhavetheoptionofpayingyourcourtcostsandfinelistedin Box14,andnotgoingtocourt.Wealmostneverrecommendsigningthecitationandpayingtheapplicable fees/fine,becausebydoingso,youarepleadingguiltytoyourspeedingticket.Bypleadingguiltytoyour speedingticket,youwillalmostalwaysseeanincreaseinyourautoinsurancerates,and,dependingonyour drivingrecord,youmayhaveyourdriverslicenserevoked.Whetheryouhireanattorneyorrepresent yourself,weneverrecommendthatyoujustsignyourcitationandsendintheapplicablefees/fine.
