General Information
The output voltage of a battery charger with
parallel connected battery varies substantially
with the charging condition of the battery, and
for many applications the load circuit requires
a better stabilized voltage. Frequently used
methods for reducing the voltage variation are
voltage dropping diodes and systems with
main and end cells, described on page 83. A
more economical solution is a "step-up"
converter. It is a DC/DC converter supplied
from the battery with the output connected in
series with the battery. It adds during battery
discharge the voltage that is needed to
maintain the required output voltage level and
can also compensate the voltage drop
between battery and load. Fig. 1 shows the
basic circuit and Fig.2 the voltage diagram.
During normal operation the output voltage of
the system is slightly reduced as the load
current flows through the converter. During

battery discharge the converter adds voltage

and keeps the output voltage of the system
constant. These converters are very similar to
those of series "C" except that the input and
output voltage ranges are coordinated with the
standard battery voltage ranges and that the
converter senses the voltage across the load
which is the total of the battery voltage and
the voltage added by the converter. External
diode "D" shown in Fig. 1 and 3 should be
provided for carrying the load current in case
of a failure of the step-up module or during
replacement of the module. It also protects the
secondary side of the module.

Features:
During normal operation no voltage needs to be added and the converter runs with a minimum of
power losses.
The maximum voltage to be added is normally less than 20 % of the total voltage. Therefore, the
step-up converter must be designed for 20 % of the through-power, only.
The voltage may be added at the positive side
and the negative line is common for input and
output as shown in Fig.1 or it may be added at
the negative side with the positive line being
common as shown in Fig. 3. Designation will
be E...p in the first or E...n in the second case.

Bypass diode D shown in figure 1 and 3 is to

be installed externally.
For more power or redundancy modules may
be connected in parallel with active current
sharing, individually protected by fuses at the
input and decoupling diodes or fuses at the
output (Fig. 4). We have built such systems up
to 2,000 A.

For applications that require individually
stabilized voltages across the loads, the
converters will be connected as shown in Fig.
5. Such converters may be modules of different
power ratings and may be arranged in a rack
system as shown above.
