Chamber Reflects on 2011 and Looks Forward to 2012

With the passing of another year, the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is proud of the previous years accomplishments, and is excited with the anticipation of what is to come in 2012.

MEMBERSHIP
In October 2011, over 200 volunteers gathered together to work for two and half days for The Chambers 2011 Rock The Chamber Membership Event. The volunteers worked against the clock and each other to help sign up new Chamber members and create a greater community awareness of the important role of the chamber of commerce. During the event, Kyle Spurgeon, President/CEO of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, members of The Chambers Executive Committee and volunteers donned rock and roll costumes to get in the spirit of the Rock The Chamber theme. After days of phone calls and visits to Jackson businesses, the volunteers recruited a total of 291 new members, exceeding the goal of 253 new members.

December a planned expansion to its Jackson manufacturing facility. The company, formed in 2009, represents an investment of almost $4.5 million and also has operations in Minneapolis and Hibbing, Minn. Its Jackson facility expansion plans to create 58 new jobs in the Jackson area over the next three years.

FORWARD JACKSON
With the new year, The Chamber is looking forward to continuing the Forward Jackson Campaign. In January 2011, The Chamber launched the five-year economic development campaign. With the help of National Community Development Services (NCDS), The Chamber reached out to several local business leaders to invest in the campaign. The initial goal of the campaign was to raise $3.8 million, where the funds would be used to create at least 3,000 jobs, improve workforce development, strengthen the communitys foundation and to help attract, retain and expand businesses in West Tennessee. The initial goal of $3.8 million was reached in September 2011. The funds committed represented pledges from 82 Chamber members and other businesses and organizations within Madison County. Upon reaching the initial campaign goal, The Chamber has set an additional stretch goal of $500,000. The campaign continues to address issues such as the Jackson-Madison County School System strategic plan, superintendent search, Madison Achieves scholarship program, community wellness, public safety, branding and regional economic development.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Along with the growth of The Chambers membership base, The Chamber also announced two Jackson industrial expansions in 2011. In June, automotive supplier US Farathane announced that it would invest $4 million and add 50 local jobs as a result of its Jackson plant expansion. The 166,000 square foot facility was at full operation in 2006. The plant was initially expected to employ approximately 130 associates, but has seen continued growth over the years. US Farathane has five U.S. manufacturing plants, employs 500 nationally and has been supplying the automotive market for more than 30 years. Once these students complete the grant and scholarship process, as well as a community service requirement and the completion of a college success course, The Chamber provides the last dollars of their tuition allowing these students to attend one of these two institutions of higher learning. Of the 118 graduates of Jackson-Madison County schools that participated in Madison Achieves in 2011, 60 percent were first generation college students and approximately 50 percent were from families with an average yearly gross income of below $25,000.

STRATEGIC PLAN
The purpose of the strategic plan is to create a partnership between the JMCSS and the community to improve public education outcomes for our public school students. The plan has goals related to academic achievement, parental/community involvement, discipline and system effectiveness. The first area of focus chosen by the JMCSS and the School Board relates to academic achievement, and is the Middle School Turnaround concept. In reviewing data in preparation for the strategic plan, it became evident that our students show a dramatic decrease in achievement when they transition from elementary school to middle school. This often carries over into their high school years. The JMCSS felt this was an opportunity to develop a plan to change that decrease. The middle school turnaround concept, which has been very successful in other areas of the country, can include longer school hours, extra tutoring, additional training for educators on best practices in teaching middle schoolers, more technology, and a myriad of other options that have been proven to turn a dramatic decrease in academic achievement to a dramatic increase. The Chamber has committed to continue its partnership with the JMCSS through the completion and implementation of their strategic plan.

WELLNESS
The Chamber hosted a Putting County Health Rankings in Action Webinar in August 2011 where The Chamber and community health leaders provided an overview of how the Jackson community is using the County Health Rankings to improve the overall health and well-being of the community. The Webinar was sponsored by the University of Wisconsin, where 189 participants represented 29 states. Madison County was ranked as the 20th healthiest county to live and work in Tennessee. The Chamber is active in Jump Start Jackson, a healthy community action team with the purpose of promoting a healthier community. Jump Start Jackson is a combination of several existing organizations that have a common goal of promoting healthy choices and lifestyles in the community. This consolidated effort will prove to be more effective and efficient than previous efforts. The Jackson community recently broke ground on CityWalk, a new urban design for healthy living located on 17 acres in downtown Jackson. This project is a gateway project that infuses new homes and commerce in downtown Jackson with a shift to wellness thinking. It will include a wellness center, built by West Tennessee Healthcare, that will promote health and wellness through an on-site clinic, a fitness facility, physical and aquatic therapies and disease management. This project will be a place of continual investment in both the well-being of its residents and the vitality of the city of Jackson.

SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH
The Chamber funded a superintendent search for the school system. While no candidate from the search was retained by the school board in the first phase of the search, The Chamber continues to offer to be a resource for the school system in this process.

MADISON ACHIEVES
The Chamber has committed to funding the Madison Achieves program scholarships, which is a last dollar scholarship program for graduates of the Madison County public school system, for the first two years of the initiative. Approximately 85 volunteers assist students and their parents in applying for grants and scholarships that go towards tuition at Jackson State Community College or Tennessee Technology Center.

A group of hospital leaders, community leaders and officials were present for the grand opening of the new Orthopedic Center, which is located on the fourth floor at General Hospital. Jackson-Madison County General Hospital continues its focus on the needs of the patients, said David Pearce, MD, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics. The goal of the new orthopedic floor is to improve the comfort of patients and the efficiency of the caregivers. It is a new, beautiful environment that should enhance the patient experience. The new Orthopedics Center is located on the fourth floor in the B Tower. Suites are spacious with modern amenities to enhance the healing environment: 24 large suites Bariatric equipment lifts, wheelchairs, doorways, restrooms and showers to provide more comfort and safe mobility Showers to accommodate patients with hip and knee surgeries and/or breaks Upgraded telemetry monitoring system of patients New designated hand, arm and shoulder rooms New Stryker beds specialized for orthopedic care and traction Upgraded nurses stations for efficiency for optimum communication and patient care New physical therapy gym to provide motivation and healing therapy for the best recovery Space for equipment so that it is easily accessible New sleeper sofas for room-in family, visitors or caregivers Upgraded and additional computers and work stations for physicians and staff Orthopedic patients at General Hospital typically are recovering from these procedures: hip or knee replacement, carpal tunnel surgery, plus other procedures of the hand, foot, knee or hip. The Legion knee is designed using advanced engineering concepts to fit the size and shapes of the knee. Surgeons are also using the Visionaire Patient Matched Instrumentation. These patient-specific surgical instruments are custom made for the precise alignment of the persons knee. This technique increases the implant longevity and comfort. Patients undergoing orthopedic surgery at General Hospital receive first class care using the latest technology, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation methods, said Kim Rush, RN, executive director of Med Surg Nursing. Many patients, of various ages and activity levels, receiving hip or knee replacement surgery have experienced pain and swelling from years of wear and tear on their joints. Orthopedic surgery at General Hospital involves providing optimal results for each patient through a team approach, Dr. Pearce said.

USEFUL TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS/MANAGERS

By Ron Acree & Joel Newman, TSBDC
IDENTIFYING THE MAJOR TIME WASTERS IN BUSINESS You can become more successful in your business if you learn to identify, and correct, these major Time Wasters: Telephone Interruptions. This item tops the list. When the telephone/cellphone rings and breaks your train of thought, it interrupts you and distracts you from what you are doing. When you hang up, you are also distracted and find it hard to get back to work. Unexpected Visitors. Unexpected or drop-in visitors can be extremely time consuming. These can be employees within your company or visitors from the outside. When they drop in, your work is disrupted, your train of thought is broken and your effectiveness is impaired. Sometime they talk endlessly about things that are unimportant and keep you from your duties. Meetings. Planned and unplanned meetings consume approximately 40 percent of your time. They can be formal or informal, with groups or one-onone, in another staff members office, conference room or your office. Many of these are unnecessary and are a waste of time. Fire Fighting and Emergencies. A major time waster is putting out fires and handling emergencies, leading to inevitable crisis. Just as you get settled in on a project, something happens that takes you away from your objective and disrupts you for a long period of time. Procrastination. This is the thief of time. The tendency to procrastinate is universal for many reasons. Socializing and Idle Conversation. This Time Waster, is one of the major culprits and previous surveys have estimated that as much as 75 percent of time at work is spent interacting with other staff that is not work related. Much of this is, by survey results, idle chatter that does nothing to produce positive work results. Indecision and Delay. Indecision costs more time than most people realize. It can generate unnecessary paperwork, correspondence and tasks, while wasting your time and that of your staff.

Rita Bryant
Senior Vice President First South Bank
The Chamber is proud to announce Rita Bryant, First South Bank, as the Volunteer of the Month for January 2011. She currently serves on the Women in Business Committee and has also volunteered her time with The Chambers Membership Events in 2009 and 2011. Rita always gives 100 percent in working with the Women in Business program, said Beth Parnell, Manager of Events for The Chamber. Her input and enthusiasm makes her an integral part of the committee. Bryant also spends her time volunteering on the Regional Board of Directors for March of Dimes, school projects at both public and private schools in Madison County, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the West Tennessee Healthcares Annual Girls Weekend Getaway. I have a passion to help those that cant help themselves or to help women help themselves by taking care of themselves so they can take care of everyone else, Bryant said. I choose to help to insure there were events that catered to the women in Jackson and also to insure all businesses in Madison county know and understand the benefits of being a chamber member.

GOOD NEWS JACKSON

The University of Memphis assumed control of what was formerly Lambuth University in December 2011 with the official recording of the deed. Transfer of the property was made from the Lambuth University Board of Directors to the State of Tennessee, for the benefit of the University of Memphis. This is a monumental day not only for the University of Memphis, but also for the citizens of Jackson and West Tennessee, said Shirley Raines, president of the University of Memphis. The City of Jackson, Madison County Government, West Tennessee Healthcare, and the Jackson Energy Authority each contributed $2 million to purchase the campus and then turn it over to the State of Tennessee, for use by the University of Memphis. With the assistance of Governor Bill Haslam, the state legislature agreed to allocate state funding for operating costs once the transfer of property is complete. An official flag-raising ceremony was held at the Lambuth campus January 12. The University of Memphis at Lambuth opened for classes this fall with more than 300 students. Registration is currently underway for the spring semester.

Chamber Emissaries Volunteer Group Selects New Chairperson

Drew Yates, financial center manager of FirstBank, has been selected as the 2012 chairperson for the Emissaries. Yates has volunteered for Chamber functions the past four years. In the past two years, he has volunteered his time with the Emissaries, the JacksonMadison County School System strategic plan initiative and the 2011 Rock The Chamber Membership Event. It is definitely an honor to be the chairperson of such a great group of people, Yates said. It is a privilege, and we have a great time working together. We eat, laugh, joke and work hard. This group of Emissaries never backs down from the chance to help new and existing members be active in the community, whether through The Chamber or various other opportunities. The Emissaries contact members to develop relationships within The Chamber. The Chamber also has other volunteer groups, including the Ambassadors, also known as the Red Coats. My favorite part about volunteering for The Chamber is having the opportunity to build relationships that go beyond just a hello and a handshake, Yates said. With each person I meet, there is someone else on the other end who wants our community to succeed, especially if they are a business owner. I appreciate the Chamber offering avenues to facilitate those opportunities through its many business networking functions. They are also opportunities for anyone to plug in and make a difference. I am glad that my employer has always encouraged me to make a difference. I also hope to be the person they think of when a financial need arises. The Emissaries work is vital to The Chamber being connected to its membership base, by ensuring The Chamber that it is meeting the needs of its members by personally contacting businesses. Each Emissary has a passion for something outside of this group, and I think it is what makes us click, Yates said. We are diverse in our interests, but common in our goal to see Jackson and the surrounding area become a place that draws people in.
