Term 3

Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School Year 2L Class Bulletin

January 2012

Dear Parents / Carers, Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed your holiday. Some of the children have travelled far and wide and it is lovely to have them all back. Thank you so much for your support with the holiday homework. Some of the posters are outstanding and are on display in the classroom. Please feel free to come and look after school, any day of the week. As you know I came back earlier than expected from Jury service before the holiday and used the time back in school to work with year 6 children, in my role as numeracy leader. That work has been extended to this term only and on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon the class will have Ms Eastwood as I continue my work with Year 6. On some weeks the class will have Mrs Lone on a Thursday afternoon and on other weeks they will have Mrs Matthews on Friday mornings. We will try and make the transitions as smooth as possible so please bear with us. Our PE days: Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoors). Please send in P.E bags and leave them in school over the term so that we have all children taking part in lessons. If you wish to talk to me about anything, please see me in the morning or send me an email. Thank you

Homework Reading Books Reading books will be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays so please ensure that your child has their book bag in school on these days, so that their books can be changed. We have recently assessed the childrens reading and as a result some of them may change the colour of their book band. Please use your comments to let me know how your child is reading and their enjoyment of the book. The children should be reading at home every day. This does not have to be the whole book, but a few pages will ensure that they are continuing to make good progress. Please continue to ask them questions about the book to develop their understanding of what they are reading. It also helps them develop an understanding of the organisation of stories, and of characters and events. We are currently reading a variety of books by Anthony Browne. I will be handing out homework on Wednesday and it should be returned on the following Monday. The homework will generally be Literacy or Maths and will link to the work that we have been doing in class that week. From time to time, I will also hand out homework related to our topic for the term. This terms topic is The Olympics. This is a very exciting time and we want the children to be engaged and to recognise the work put in by the competitors.

Playtime Please Please ensure that all coats, scarves and gloves are

labelled. We encourage the children to take care of their own clothing but if property is lost, it can usually be found in the lost property containers in the Year one corridor.

24th January: Maths workshop for year one and two parents: 8.50-9.50 10th February End of term: End of school day 3:25 Monday 20th February: Term 4 starts.

Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School Year 2L Class Bulletin

January 2012
Literacy: In Literacy we will be looking at different stories by the author Anthony Browne, reading and discussing his stories before writing our own narratives. We will use his detailed drawings of settings to inspire the children to create their own settings. They will develop their use of adjectives, similes, variety of words and their use of extended sentences. We will then move on to reading and writing reports. Numeracy: In numeracy we will develop the use of recalling and using facts we know to solve verbal questions. In addition to this, we will be focusing on developing our calculation skills in addition and subtraction through the use of partitioning and number lines. The children will be encouraged to use mental strategies for simple sums as well as different strategies to perform more tricky calculations. They will also be given more open-ended tasks in which to apply what they have learnt and develop their problem-solving skills. The children will be encouraged to create number sentences in response to written problems. We will continue to have times table tests each week on a Monday, where the children are encouraged to beat their score from the previous week. In Year 2 these will start by focusing on remembering the number patterns when counting in twos, fives and tens. Topic The Olympics We will look at the values which the Olympics represent and also at the continents and countries which will take part. We will encourage the children to see how the Olympics bring the world together. The children will be encouraged to find similarities and differences between Olympic countries and the country they live in. In the final week of term we hope to design costumes based on the flag of their choice and have a mini Olympics (weather permitting) against 2O. If you are able to offer refreshments from another country or have the time to come and cook a national dish with the class, please see me as soon as possible.

Phonics and Spellings

The children are still split into different phonics groups to best suit their current phonics understanding and their spellings will be based on what they have been learning in this session. Spelling tests will continue to take place on Friday. Please ensure that children have their phonics books in school on Fridays so that they can record their scores and stick their new spellings in.

PSHCE New Beginnings

Children will be looking at setting goals and aiming for them. We will think about the training that athletes do and understand that goals have to be set and worked at before they can be achieved. We will also learn how to persevere and overcome difficulties.

R.E. Jesus as a teacher

In R.E we will be looking at how Jesus used every day items to help His listeners understand more about God. We will also look at His use of parables.

P.E.
Outdoor - Children will learn a variety of track and field events which will prepare them for a mini Olympics against 2O. We will learn how to take part and enjoy the event whether we win or lose. Outdoor PE will be on Thursday afternoons. Kit required: plimsolls, navy shorts/ jogging bottoms and pale blue t-shirt. Children will wear their school jumpers to protect them against the cold. Indoor P.E on Monday afternoons. In dance the children will be focusing on responding to dance and music from around the world. They will learn, rehearse and perform their dances. Kit required: trainers or plimsolls, navy shorts and pale blue t-shirt.
