Abstract for Freighter 15

Due to the limited accommodation facilities, teams will be shortlisted for accommodation based on the following abstract provided by the team. Please note that even if your abstract does not get shortlisted, you are still eligible to participate in the competition. Guidelines for the submission of the abstract are as follows: y Rename the .doc/.docx file as Team code.doc or Team code.docx (example: FR1001.doc/FR1001.docx where FR1001 will represent the respective Registration code (or Team code or Team id)) and email the file to aero@techfest.org. The format for naming the file has to be strictly followed. Otherwise there is a possibility of your abstract being not accepted. Please fill in the information in the sections mentioned below. Kindly do not exceed the word limit mentioned in respective sections and do make sure that you type the document only in Arial font (size 12). Support your write up with appropriate images of your machine. Note that even photos of incomplete machine may be attached and if it is not at all possible to include the pictures then try and integrate 2d plans/CAD drawings in the abstract. This information shall be considered valuable for deciding Design / Innovation prizes. The abstract of your machine will be helpful everywhere in future as an evidence of your hard-work, along with determining your position for the competition. So please pay adequate attention to it.

Fill in the information about your machine in the respective sections as mentioned below:

1. Describe the machine design with a diagram, with pictures taken in the course of development of aircraft (of the machine you are building, attach a .jpeg image with the e-mail) or a picture of actual machine (if it is ready, attach a .jpeg image with the e-mail) or both. (250 words) The model we have built is a very simple conventional glider. It has conventional control surfaces like ailerons, elevators and rudder. The glider is a tractor type model having propeller in its nose section. The entire length of the aircraft is 58 cm. The wing span of the aircraft is 60 cm. The height of the aircraft is 10 cm. The wings cross section is a cambered aerofoil (eppler 422). The wing is not made of uniform cross section and is tapered towards its tip. The root chord is 12 cm while the tip chord is 8 cm. The high wings are placed with a dihedral angle of 10 degrees. The tapering ratio of the tail section is 1.5. The landing gear assembly has two main wheels on both the sides of the fuselage and a tail wheel. We have chosen is a high lift low Reynolds number aerofoil which has a maximum coefficient of lift of 1.8 and maximum coefficient of drag of 0.024 and stalling angle of 14 degrees. The aspect ratio of the wing is 7.5.The length of the horizontal stabilizer is 24 cm and the height of the vertical stabilizer is 12 cm. The tail section is made of a symmetrical aerofoil(NACA 0012). The material used to build the body of the aircraft is high density thermocol(foam) considering the strength and light weight nature of the material.

2. Detail out the motors and the battery pack you have used to throttle the glider for the first minute of flight. Also explain the takeoff mechanism in brief. ( 250 words ) The motor we have used in our model is a 750kv (rpm/v) DAT-750 800g Out runner BL Brushless Motor. It is a High Torque, Light Weight brushless motor. The KV (rpm/v) of the motor is 800 and the voltage is 11.1V.The No Load Speed (rpm) is 8600 while the Load Speed (rpm) is 6350.The Net Weight of the motor is 80g. The high torque low weight motor gives the necessary torque to the propeller which helps the model to take off easily .The motor is powered by a 11.1v 3S1P 8C 2000mAh Lipo Battery. The Max Charge is 5C and Max Continuous Discharge is 8C.The Max Charge Current of the battery is 11A.The Max Continuous Current the battery can provide is 17.6A.The battery approximately weighs around 122g. First the motor is started and the propeller is allowed to rotate at its full speed for a few seconds. Then the model is hand launched in such a way that the propeller provides the necessary thrust to propel the model. No separate launching mechanisms are used to launch the glider.

3. Explain the mechanisms used in the machine manoeuvring and also list the type of actuators you have used. (250 words) We are using conventional control surfaces namely rudder, aileron and elevator. The rudder, aileron and elevator are used to yaw, roll and pitch the aircraft respectively. We have used four servo controllers to operate the control surfaces in which two are used to control the ailerons while the rudder and elevator are controlled using one servo each. The servos used are 12.5g >=1.5 Kgf.cm Metal Gear Digital Servos. Operating Voltage is between 4.8V DC and 6.0V DC and the Operating Current is between 200mA and 240mA. The Operating Speed of the servos is between 0.07sec/60 and 0.06sec/60.The Stall Torque is from 1.5kg.cm to 1.7kg.cm.The Dead band is 3uSec.The Size of the servos is 22.6 x 11.5x 23.7mm and it weighs around 12.5g

4. Describe the strategy you will use to complete the task to win the game. (200words) The glider we have built is designed keeping the problem statement of the event in mind. We have used only the components which suit the design specification perfectly. The motor we have used here is a high torque low weight brushless motor. The propeller rotates at a very high rpm such that it provides the necessary thrust to propel the aircraft and provides the necessary velocity such that it completes its manoeuvres within the stipulated time. According to our theoretical estimation our glider can travel with a velocity of about 4 m/s and can complete the flight within the stipulated 3 minutes. The airfoil we have used here is the E422. This is a low speed airfoil which has a coefficient of lift of around 1.8. This allows the aircraft to carry more payload. According to our estimation our glider can carry a payload of 150-250 grams. The aircraft is highly manoeuvrable as we have used a mixer to combine the control of rudder and ailerons in a single stick. So by operating a single stick in the remote the aircrafts rudder and aileron are operated and hence glider is banked to a particular side with a very short turning radius.

5. Describe the innovation if any that you have done in the aircraft. (200 words) We have used a very low drag high lift self-designed wing and a flawless and compact fuselage in the shape of a semi-airfoil. The design is in such a way that it is very stable and under control even in very slow speed.
