Mo dule 1 Topic Introduction to micro/ nanoscale transport phenomena & its applications. An overview of limitations of macroscopic formulations, size effect behaviour, microscopic view point, micro-scale engineering applications, microelectronics, micro channels, micro heat pipes, thin films, electronics cooling, two phase flow, radiation etc. Fundamental approaches for micro/ nanoscale fluid mechanics & heat transfer Quantum mechanics considerations, Kinetic theory, Boltzmann transport equation, Maxwells equations, molecular dynamics modelling, Knudsen number, Flow regimes, Maxwells slip theory. Micro-scale Heat conduction Thermal conductivity models, specific heat of solids, Phonon transport, molecular dynamics, conduction in thin films, semiconductors, electronic devices. Microfluidics Fundamentals of Electrokinetics, Low inertia flows, Electrokinetic, pressure-driven and surface tension driven flows, Mass transfer at micro/nano scales Micro-scale Convection Convective heat transfer in micro-tubes & channels, Governing equations, single phase forced connection, boiling & condensation, non-conventional analysis methods. Nanoparticles & Nanofluids Preparation, thermal conductivity, viscosity, surface tension, transport phenomena in nano scale suspensions, forced convection & two phase heat transfer. Micro-scale radiative heat transfer Spatial & temporal microscales, modelling of micro-scale radiation, radiation properties, silicon film, superconductivity material film. Measurements at micro/nano scale Concentration, temperature field, diffusion etc. Engineering Applications Flow in micro-channels Gas, Liquid, two phase micro-channel heat sinks, micro heat pipes.
