Description of water & sanitation problems of your local area with photos which you are trying to resolve with the help of grants from JWF fund. (Max. 300-word):

Background: Situation to be transformed

The escalation of poverty levels in Nepal, has brought the question of resource use, ownership and access to the attention of researchers, academics, policy communities and development partners. Nepal s relative abundance of water resources but its scarcity of economic means to harness available water resources has been the country s major challenge. Like in many other parts of nation, access to clean water remains a significant challenge in NUWAKOT. It is estimated that more than 60% of the population do not have access to clean water despite the fact that much of the country have reliable water sources and adequate rainfall. One of the main challenges is adequate infrastructure to harvest available rainwater. Insufficient access to safe and adequate drinking water not only has health implications, but also social and economic impacts on communities. This is especially the case for women and girls who are traditionally responsible for domestic tasks such as the collection of water. Furthermore, school going children often bear the brunt of water shortages. They may miss almost hours of lessons taught in school each day as they have to collect water from remote sources, which is needed to clean the classrooms, drinking for teachers and students as well as other uses at school. Sometimes the water is retrieved from contaminated sources, which have serious potential health implications. School sanitation, including provision of toilets and water, is an important factor affecting attendance and enrolment. Proper sanitation is critical for adolescent girls ,Looking at the impact of providing and drinking water in schools, the most visible affect is on adolescent girls increases the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs),This is because girls could not relieve properly themselves , particularly during menstruation where water is essential for sanitation. impact of school sanitation on adolescent girls, It has been noted that except for special projects, School Sanitation, and Hygiene in schools, providing and keeping toilets clean as well as supplying drinking water tends to be a low priority for school authorities. This discourages children from using them and ultimately negatively effects enrolment and attendance. It is against this background that the IDEA NEPAL proposes to address this situation in -------where 700 girls are enrolled for their education out of 1200 students by installing rain water harvest tanks which enable students to stay in class to achieve a real education and also empower wider communities on sustainable water management.

Description of your project plan for resolving these water & sanitation problems mentioned in Q1 with the help of grants from JWF fund:
Name of your project (Max. 20-word):

2-1.

*Give a brief, clear and short name which describes your project, e.g. Construct 20 eco-san toilets at 5 schools, and holding of 3 eco-san workshops .

Installing A rain water harvest tanks in Nuwakot to enable Girl students to stay in class to achieve a real education and also empower wider communities on sustainable water management.

2-2.

Location of your project (Max. 50-word):

*Paste the map and photos of your project s location here.

2-3.

Objectives of your project (Max. 100-word):

*Give a brief and clear description of your project s objectives.

1. Safe rainwater collection: Collect rain water from the roof tops of campus building in leak proof tanks with a view to provide adequate water for drinking as well as for the toilets. The

This situation has led to frequent outbreaks of water-borne diseases, which also further impacts performance in school. A research carried by the MIT (USA) ENPHO and Ministry of Health and population, Nepal revealed shocking findings. It was discovered that most of children aged between 0-5 died each day due to water borne disease. The research further found out that the larger part of Nepal have arsenic contaminatation,

rooftop rainwater harvesting tanks will serve two purposes: (a) A source of potable water, especially during the dry season, and (b) Year - round provision of water for hand-flush school toilets. 2. Demonstrates self-reliance: Demonstrates how poor people can solve their own problems by applying traditional knowledge, skills and locally available raw materials to construct these rainwater-harvesting tanks and can replicate other places, thus reducing dependency on outside skills. 3. Sustainable and ecologically sound: Maximizes the quantity and quality of the collected rainwater by applying the principles of ecological engineering to traditional rainwater harvesting techniques. 4. Low cost filtration (BIOSAND FILTER): Develop simple, innovative, low cost filtration systems to reduce sedimentation (from collected water) and mitigate contamination (from stored water).
2-4. Details of your project (Max. 300-word):

*Give a more in depth description of your project. *Clarify numbers: If you plan to construct wells/toilets/rain-harvest tanks and so on, e.g. construct wells:4, construct toilets: 5, built rain-harvest tanks: 3 and water & sanitation Workshops: 3 times. *If your project is related to a well for drinking water, describe how you check water qualities.

Nuwakot Campus is lied in Bidur municipality, a water stressed geography,This area is elevated with difficult access to ground water, or any water for that matter. it has been blessed with very awared , poor but cooperative community. This campus have has total of 1200 students among 700 are girl students which are quite a big number for any of other city in Nepal. Though this institution is doing better with its education quality it is lack of very basic infrastructure, which are availability of water for sanitation and drinking pupose which make girl students vulnerable for attending class and achieving real education and also effect community by damaging their dignity. The IDEA NEPAL with help of Member of Parliaments from that area has been trying to provide the basic needs toilets and water, which are an important factor affecting attendance and enrolment. The main idea of this project is longterm solution is to catch rainwater where it falls using the rooftops of the campus buildings and collecting it in leak proof water tanks .The water from these RWH tanks could be used for drinking water and in low cost toilets. These toilets are important to increase school attendance of girls. Particularly for girls and women, lack of privacy is not only an affront to their dignity but also inconvenient and dangerous.(As Proper sanitation is critical for adolescent girls ,the most visible affect is on adolescent girls increases the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs),This is because girls could not relieve properly themselves , particularly during menstruation where water is essential for sanitation.) This project is constructed 1 toilet and builds 2 no.s rainwater tanks (of 20 thousand liter) it will carry 2-time water and sanitation workshop .It will also build 1 Biosand filter for filter contamination.
2-1. Prospective positive impact of your project on these water & sanitation problems mentioned Q1 (Max. 100-word):

Prospective positive impact of this project by providing with an alternative source of water for drinking and sanitation. And make School attendance will increase, especially for girls, school children (mostly girls) will be free from walking long distances or queue up to collect drinking water. This project is located in water Stressed areas where access to drinking water is a major problem and where RWH is not only an alternative, but often the only viable solution. It will make an positive replicable impact for those deprived community with an alternate source

for their basic needs. This project also make an impact on education authority where School Sanitation, and Hygiene in schools, providing and keeping toilets clean as well as supplying drinking water tends to be a low priority. On completion of the project it is expected that the National Water Policies of the country will be influenced to include rooftop RWH on a large scale in schools.
