Outline :
Poverty Poverty is the worst form of violence. - Mohandas Gandhi Intro: Poverty is widespread in India, with the nation estimated to have a third of the world's poor. According to a 2005 World Bank estimate, 26.1% of the total Indian population falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day, in nominal terms 21.6 a day in urban areas and 14.3 in rural areas). A recent report by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative states that 8 Indian states have more poor than 26 poorest African nations combined which totals to more than 410 million poor in the poorest African countries. According to a new UN Millennium Development Goals Report, as many as 320 million people in India and China are expected to come out of extreme poverty in the next four years, while India's poverty rate is projected to drop to 22% in 2015.The report also indicates that in Southern Asia, however, only India, where the poverty rate is projected to fall from 51% in 1990 to about 22% in 2015, is on track to cut poverty in half by the 2015 target date. Key Points : 60 percent of the world's hungry are women. 50 percent of pregnant women in developing countries lack proper maternal care, resulting in over 300,000 maternal deaths annually from childbirth. 1 out of 6 infants are born with a low birth weight in developing countries. A third of all childhood death in sub-Saharan Africa is caused by hunger. Every five seconds, a child dies from hunger-related diseases.

Speech:
Good morning everyone! I am going to talk about the increasing threat to human race , poverty. Poverty is not a condition which emerged recently but it has been prevailing for a long time but is left unnoticed or people get used with it and get along with their lives. So I would like to throw light on the three things about poverty 1. What is the cause of poverty? 2. Who is responsible? 3. How can it be eradicated?

Causes: Poverty is mainly caused by un education, urbanization, over population and as result unemployment. The poor cannot afford good education, health and other services which results in their children being uneducated, unemployed and with poor health and ultimately under the poverty line. Poverty is like a cycle, where poor parents give birth to poor children and it continues. Hence in order to break this cycle of poverty some drastic measures have to be taken. Responsibility: Its not their fault to be born poor. Its not that they are lazy to go to work so that they are poor; its just that they are not provided with opportunities. So, whose responsibility is it to give them the right opportunity and save them from poverty? According to my opinion the government should held responsible for this condition. Despite having various anti-begging acts in the law still we have beggars, which must be changed. An individual or an organization cannot put an end to poverty it can be reduced only if strict measures are taken by the government and laws are enforced. Eradication: In order to break the cycle of poverty all the poor children must be given good education so that they can be employed and come out of poverty. The Government must enforce compulsory education to all children. And also to provide good employment opportunities for the poor. Hence Poverty must be minimized and should not continue to the future generations so as to live a better life.
