Volume 12, Number 4

The View From Where You Are Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10). Far removed from another persons troubles it can become hard to really empathize. We may imagine that we know what it is like to live in a place where there are bars on the windows and people keep guns handy, or simply live in fear. The closest that most of us come to that life is viewing a television drama, or noting it in the news. We may even wonder why people are willing to live as they do. When we sleep in a comfortable bed at night it is hard to understand the life of the person who may be in a flop house one night and a cardboard box the next. When we have plenty of food on the table, it is hard to imagine what it is like to wonder whether there will anything to eat tomorrow. While we may not all shop at the fanciest of stores for our clothing, we may not relate well to the ones who have very limited clothing that has come from clothing give-aways and hasnt been washed in weeks. It is hard for those of us who have lived with most of our needs being met to relate to those who dont know how to meet ordinary needs. I must admit, through the years I have thought poorly of many who have come to the door wanting assistance. I imagine that they should do better than they do. Challenged to take hold of freedom and personal responsibility, it is hard to relate to those who have not been so taught. Perhaps such an non-relating attitude carries into the spiritual as well. Raised in a situation where God, the Bible, and church have been vital elements of living, it is difficult to comprehend the lives of those who have not been so raised. The fact is, most of us never walk in another persons shoes. We know our own, and often little more. Still, the gospel is for all. The message of hope and salvation reaches to every strata of society. Your experience may not be mine, but each of us can and must face it from where we are. Russ
