Ken Grabowski/News Advocate

Sarah Bailey holds her granddaughter, Maddie, who she and her husband David
are taking care of while her parents, Rob and Becky Nuyen, are deployed to
Afghanistan.
TAKING
CARE OF
MADDIE
By KEN GRABOWSKI
AssociAte editor
Sarah Bailey cant help but laugh when
she thinks of the image.
The Manistee resident said a few years
back when she and her husband, David,
had all their eight children at home he
would often joke about the day when
they were all gone and what he and Sarah
planned to do.
David would say some day we are
going to buy a trailer we can put behind
our car to travel all over the country to
visit them, said Bailey with a big smile.
Bailey laughed as she pointed out that a
trailer wouldnt quite cut it anymore. What
would probably be more appropriate is a
jet airliner to accomplish the task, because
their children are now spread around the
globe with their careers.
And although the nest is almost cleared
out with the exception of son, John, they
do have a cute little visitor who has taken
up residence in their household. That new
addition is their 2-year-old granddaugh-
ter Maddie. She is going to be staying
with them for the next year while Sarahs
daughter, Becky, and her husband Rob
Nuyen will be deployed to Afghanistan
with the Marines.
Having both parents serving as
Marines in Afghanistan at the same time is
a unique situation in itself, but the Baileys
have even more reason to keep a close
eye on that region of the world. That is
because their son, Stephen, who also is in
the Marines, is presently serving a tour of
duty in Afghanistan.
It is kind of unusual and people usu-
ally say, wow, when they hear about it,
said Bailey.
Both Becky and Rob are making a
career out of the Marines, and the decision
to have both parents on deployment at the
same time was something that weighed
heavily on their minds for quite some time.
Rob is a staff sergeant who repairs diesel
trucks, while Becky is a dispersor, which
is similar to an accounts payable person in
the Marines.
To miss a year of your childs life is a
difficult decision, said Bailey. Becky is
leaving in February to start her deploy-
ment and she should be gone for a year.
They are talking about pulling the Marines
out of Afghanistan, so with what she does
it might mean she has to be there until
they pull out.
One of the many unique coincidences
is her deployment will overlap with three
months that her brother is in Afghanistan.
Her husband is scheduled to leave in
March, and he is expecting a seven-month
deployment.
I CAN TAKE
CARE OF ONE
They will be at the same place in
Afghanistan at Camp Leatherneck, but
they obviously will be living with their
units and not together, said Bailey. They

still should be able to see
each other on a daily basis.
However, they real-
ized that leaving Maddie
with her grandparents is
something that would make
the separation from their
child easier for the parents.
It also is a relief for the
grandparents knowing they
will be caring for their first
grandchild during this time.
Becky has already re-
enlisted, and she is going to
make a career out (of the)
Marines, said Bailey. Her
husband, Rob, has already
been in for 12 or 13 years
and plans to do the same.
So, Becky knew that if she
was deployed it would help
her career. We talked at
great length about her leav-
ing, and if it would make
sense of me taking care of
Maddie or not.
Bailey has a very time-
consuming job of her
own as the director of
the CASMAN Alternative
Academy. Taking on an
active 2-year-old can be a
challenge for anyone, let
alone someone holding that
type of job.
I said if you are going
to deploy please do it before
you have more children,
because I can take care of
one, but I am not sure of
any more than that right
now. So, she scheduled to
be deployed at a time when
her husband would be over
there.
Becky came home for
the holidays and brought
Maddie to what would be
her new home for the next
year. Sarah said during
that time they talked more
about the decision, and felt
that this would be the best
possible time to do it from
Maddies stand point, as
well.
Part of Beckys reason-
ing for going at this point in
her life is Maddie will not
remember it as much as a
child of 8 or 9 years of age
would with that type of sep-
aration, said Bailey. We
have done a fair amount of
research on helping with
the emotional health of
such a separation.
However, something
that will make the separa-
tion between the parents
and their daughter easier
is technology. There was
a time 15 to 20 years ago
when something like this
happened the only way
of communicating would
have been by letters that
took weeks to reach their
destination. However, with
todays technology they will

About half of American
adults suffer with at least
one chronic condition, such
as heart disease, cancer or
diabetes, according to the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC).
However, many of these
conditions are preventable
or can be detected early
through check-ups and
screenings, which often-
times are free or covered
at low costs by most health
plans.
Being proactive by
regularly taking advantage
of the availability of pre-
ventive tests can decrease
trips to the doctor or the
emergency room and help
detect chronic conditions
before they become serious
and require expensive treat-
ment. To encourage their
members, many health
insurers offer rewards,
such as free or discounted
medications, for taking
these preventive tests. Some
plans also help make it easy
for members to have the
screenings by setting up
appointments for them or
providing home test kits.
However, despite these
benefits, there is concern
that adults arent getting
the preventive care they
need for lifelong health and
well-being. Here are four
key areas where Humana
suggests you get preventive
care:
1) Cancer. Fewer than
half of adults over age 50
are up to date with screen-
ings for colorectal cancer.
However, estimates suggest
that a screening, such as
a colonoscopy recom-
mended every 10 years by
the CDC could help save
more than 18,000 lives
annually from colorectal
cancer, the second-leading
cause of U.S. cancer-related
deaths.
Additionally, recent
studies found that only half
of eligible women in the
U.S. get their recommended
annual mammogram.
Mammograms lower the
risk of dying from breast
cancer by 35 percent in
women over the age of 50.
2) Diabetes. Diabetes,
which affects 24 million
Americans, is the lead-
ing cause of heart disease,
stroke, blindness, kidney
failure and lower-extrem-
ity amputation. With tests
available to monitor for
cholesterol, blood sugar,
blood pressure, blindness
and foot issues, it is easier
than ever to diagnose diabe-
tes and reduce the progres-
sion of related complica-
tions.
3) Heart and Stroke.
Heart disease and stroke
are the first and third-
leading causes of death,
respectively, also account-
ing for a large number of
disabilities for Americans.
Fortunately, screenings
have helped reduce death
rates for both conditions
by more than 20 percent
since 1999. Cardiovascular
screenings every five years
to test cholesterol, lipid and
triglyceride levels can help
detect conditions leading
to a heart attack or stroke.
It is also important to
eliminate smoking, a direct
contributor to heart disease
and stroke. Today, many
health plans like Humana
offer help with smoking
cessation.
4) Mind/Body. On
average, adults with seri-
With preventive screenings, you can curb serious health problems
ous mental illnesses live
25 years shorter than their
counterparts without these
illnesses, which are largely
due to preventable condi-
tions. Depression screen-
ings are just one service
designed to help monitor
for serious mental health
conditions. Counseling for
alcohol and drug abuse
both of which can lead
to a wide range of physical,
mental and social problems
is also available.

be able to keep that bond
strong via Skype (talking
online complete with video)
on the Internet. That means
Maddie will not only be able
to talk to her parents, but
see them as well.
Becky thinks she will
be able to do that from over
there, and with the way
the timing works out she
should be able to Skype
when she gets off work,
said Bailey.
Some may think taking
on a two-year-old grand-
child while her parents are
deployed in Afghanistan
would be quite a challenge,
but Bailey sees it as being
an extremely positive expe-
rience.
I FEEL
PRIVILEGED
She is my first
grandchild and they live
in California at Camp
Pendelton, so I look at this
as a rare opportunity to
forge a relationship with
her and I feel privileged,
said Bailey. She has
adapted real well so far and
things are going well.
Bailey said all her chil-
dren have been active in
careers that involve ser-
vice and the trend started
with here eldest daughter,
Tanya, who works for
CityYear.
She lives in Boston and
with CityYear you start as
a volunteer and work with
the inner-city schools for
two years as a volunteer in
after-school programs for
kids not doing well, said
Bailey. When my next
daughter, Rachel, graduated
from college she wanted
to do the same thing and
she worked in Chicago and
Little Rock, Ark. Rachel
went back to Chicago after
about five years of service
with CityYear and now does
an after school program
with the YMCA.
Daughters Becky and
Chrissy were next in age
and they were followed by
Stephen.
Stephen was the first
boy and from the time he
was in middle school he
said he wanted to be in
the Marines and join the
service, said Bailey. So,
he went right in out of
high school and when he
graduated from boot camp
we went out there for his
graduation.
Becky went with and
she turned to me and said
I think I can be a Marine,
and four months later she
was one.
She said her daughter
Chrissy graduated from
Central Michigan University
and then made a decision to
join the Peace Corps.
She is serving in Kenya
right now teaching science
and math in high school,
said Bailey.
Her son Caleb has
entered the Air Force and
just graduated from boot
camp, so now there are
four members of the fam-
ily currently serving in the
military.
However, for now the
focus is on Maddie and
making sure that the next
year is a growing and nur-
turing one for her while
both her parents serve
important roles in the
military. By the looks of the
way she is adapting to life
with her grandparents in
Manistee it appears to be a
situation of mission accom-
plished.
