Cold War in the 20th Century In Jyoti Thottams article entitled A Rivalry on the Roof of the World, the

tension between the two systems: chaotic and undergoverned India and orderly and overgoverned China(Thottam, 2009) is discussed. It reiterates the history and roots of the rivalry between the two nations regarding their possession and control over the Himalayan Mountains. The text explains that the causes of this rivalry, tension and annoyance include aggressive border patrolling, and territorial and infrastructural issues and conflicts. However, despite the rivalry in past, the geopolitical game has changed through the passage of time with the United States building stronger ties between the two nations. In conclusion, the author anticipates the settlement of affairs between China and India in the coming Southeast Asian Summit in Bangkok for these issues, small and insignificant they may seem, may cause greater conflicts and controversy in the future. However, all problems and issues are not expected to be resolved all in a day. While reading the text, I was reminded of the Cold War which happened after the World War II. It was a silent battle between US and USSR to determine which military alliance was greater and superior than the other. It was not a brutal and bloody battle but the conflict and tension were manifested in military coalitions, strategic conventional force deployments, a nuclear arms race, espionage, proxy wars, propaganda, and technological competition. The rivalry between India and China is similar to the Cold war because they have conflicts and clashes but do not result to war and violence as a solution to these problems. In addition, I honor and appreciate the leaders of both nations for their efforts to minimize and settle their disputes and conflicts as early as now. The article clearly presented ideas and concepts and provided me with a better understanding of the rivalry between the two nations. The text opened my mind towards the different concerns and problems faced by other countries which we do not normally hear in the news or read in newspapers. With my added information and awareness regarding this topic, I would keep an eye on the next steps and measures that these nations would make to provide solution to their problems. Furthermore, the strength and skills of their leaders can also be assessed and measured through their responses to these situations. I cannot afford to be indifferent and unconcerned about this issue for I know that not only the Philippines, but the whole world, would be greatly affected by the outcome of this rivalry.
