Assignment Remit
The following remits have been structured and sequenced to follow a logical design process and allow the development of design concepts. Clear evidence of this process and your development, should be observed by your lecturer in class. Workshop Support Students who were unable to attend, and produce the physical evidence required, should attend the Time tabled Art & Design Workshops.

SECTION 1 Setting design criteria (Brief) (200 words)

Your remit is to write a brief for the design of a 3 star Hotel Bedroom for International Business Tourists explaining and expanding upon the general criteria listed below. This remit will prepare students to develop the necessary skills of setting and communicating design criteria and specifications.

General information As you can not provide the specific information for this section (apart from dates which you can estimate & justify) you should state what information should be included and explain why it is important. End user description and requirements You should provide a basic profile of your clientele, stating their requirements for the environment specified. (PPS) Functional requirements You should state and explain the functional requirements for the environment specified. Aesthetic requirements You should state and explain the aesthetical requirements for the environment specified. (State the basis of and the visual style required Vernacular, Ancient, Classical, Historical, Art-ism, Modernist or Post Modernist justifying the styles appearance and application minimalist, classical, historical, prestigious, stylistic, fashionable, utilitarian, industrial, eclectic, humanist or humorous in terms of the perception of the environment and the target markets tastes and expectations) Design considerations and issues. You should identify and discuss any design issues that have not included in the main parts of the brief, but are relevant to producing and effective environment. Working procedure To generate evidence for your individual portfolio students are allowed to work in class as a team of four or five students. However, it is each students responsibility to complete the brief individually providing clarification and justification for the criteria included in their brief. The group should initially brainstorm using the above criteria and the handout Specifying Design Criteria. Record the answers so you can write them up neatly later, providing further written clarification and justifications for their inclusion in the brief.

THE EVIDENCE YOU GENERATE FOR THIS REMIT SHOULD BE TREATED AS AN ILLUSTRATION AND INCLUDED IN THE RELEVANT SECTION OF THE MAIN BODY OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT. IT SHOULD NOT BE SUBMITTED AS AN APPENDIX.

SECTION 2 Floor plan - Layout & arrangement (100 words)

Your remit is to select and arrange items into an effective bedroom plan. YOU MUST USE THE PRINTED ROOM LAYOUT, ITEMS & ACTIVITY SPACES PROVIDED DURING YOUR SPACE PLANNING LECTURE. DO NOT DRAW YOUR OWN ROOM! You should consider and justify the items selection and arrangement using the design criteria and specifications covered in Remit 1 Setting design criteria (Brief). Do not assume that all of the required facilities and features are included! You may wish to identify or suggest extra, or alternative, items and facilities that may also need to be included in the room. However if you add these to your plan they MUST be drawn accurately to scale. This Remit intends to raise an awareness of the functional requirements and considerations for the design of a hotel bedroom. It has been prepared to assist you, as the designers client, in developing the necessary skills for assisting in the development of, and checking, such a floor plan. Working procedure To generate physical evidence for your individual portfolio students are allowed to work in class as a team of four or five students. However, it is each students responsibility to write an individual review for this task. This review should provide clarification and justification for the selection and position of furniture, and any overlapping of the items space requirements on the layout. It should also include suggestions for modification and improvement. a). b). The first sheet in this set shows the dimensions of the room. The next 4 sheets show the items that you should consider locating in the bedroom. Due to limited space you do not have to install all the items. You should however justify the selection or rejection of the items in relation to the design criteria indicated in Remit 1 Setting design criteria (Brief). The next 4 sheets show the space the end users require to use these items. These dimensions have been produced by using anthropometric and ergonomic data. Some of these space requirements may overlap - but you should justify why you can have these spaces overlapping on your final layout. Using a pencil, one member of the group should begin to record INSIDE the space requirement shapes the name of the item the space relates to. (If one of your team members does not do this you will not know which space and item go together when you have cut them all out) Using the scissors provided the remaining students should start cutting out the individual items; and then the items space requirements when task 1 has been completed. The team should now select the items they are installing whilst one member of the group records the justification for the items selection. All the team should attempt to arrange the items, and their spaces into a draft bedroom plan that the whole group is agreed upon. Using the glue stick provided one member should affix the items, and their spaces, into location.
